By this means, I extend to the 1929 student body every good wish. You have developed a commendable spirit of loyalty. I trust that the time spent with your studies and student activities at the San Angelo High School will return a full measure of fruitfulness. It is my sincere hope that to each of you usefulness will come. As you later go about your life work as men and women, the Westerner, I am sure, will return to you many happy memories. FELIX E. I can sincerely say that the loyalty of our student body this year has been outstanding. You have also shown an excellent school spirit. You have gained for the school fine honors in athletics, in literary work, in music, and in vocaf tional agriculture. Let me ask that you carry this same spirit throughout life. Bear your share of the burden and stand always for what is right. I wish to thank the Staff, especially, for the untiring work in getting out this splendid issue of The Westerner. You have done much hard work to make this issue a success. In after years, I'm sure that you will feel fully paid for your efforts. C. H. It aims to encourage dramatic talent by freeing players from the self-consciousneess of the inexperienced. As yet the accomplish- ments of the club are meager. If we didn't like poster work we could sketch from a model: if we didn't like model sketching we could make landscape designs, or border designs from the seven elements of Mexican Art. We were very proud of Verde Wright, Geneva Allen, .lim Howard King and Kenneth Allen when they won first and second prizes in the Little Theatre poster contest. Our sponsors, Mr. Mowery and Mr. Anderson, have done everything they could to help us in our work, and Irene Neves, our director, refaroused our interest at the time when our club nearly went out of exifstence, We hope that next year we shall be reorganized: that we shall have a longer period ni which to work, and that we shall have a room more adapted to be an art studio. These men took a light, comparatively inev perienced squad of youngsters and developed a team which became known before the season was over. as one of the hardest fighting football clubs in Texas. After the first of the year, Coach Crawford took over the basketball team when Coach Bissett began working the track men. Although Mr. Crawford had only a short time in which to whip his men into shape, he built up a powerful machine which won the championship of District 18. Too much cannot be said of Mr. Bissett as a track coach. The track team has done more in the last two years to place San Angelo on the map athletically than anything else. Vic' tories were won over Ballinger, Winters, Big Spring, Del Rio, Brownwood, and East' land. San Angelo played a tie game with Cisco, but lost to Abilene, Ranger and Breckenridge. Even though some of our best men were kept on the sidelines because of injuries and the eligibility rules, our little team kept fighting to the end and gained for itself the reputation of the scrappiest team in Texas. The first meet of the season was the great invitation track meet held in connection with the Fat Stock Show at Fort Worth on March 16. Over one thousand athletes from several states competed. San Angelo won the meet with eighteen points. The points were made as follows: Tom Morrison, 220 yard dash, first, Rex Keeling, 880 yard run, second, Louis Brothers, 440 yard dash, first, one mile releay, first. On March 29 Coach Bissett took six men to the Texas Relays at Austin. The Medley team, composed of Keeling, jones, Morrison and Brothers, won the Medley relay in 3:44.6. This team tied the record set last year by San Angelo. The mile relay team, composed of Haley, Morrison, Brothers and jones, won the mile relay and set a new Texas record of 3 :29.7. At the District Meet on April 13, the Bobcats completely outclassed the field, amassing a total of 67 points to 14 points by the nearest competitor. Because of our victories at the Texas Relays, the business men of San Angelo raised a fund of S750 to defray the expenses of the track team to the annuaal Kansas Relays, held at Lawrence, Kansas, on April 20. The team came through with more glory, winning both the 880 Relay and the Mile Relay, and placing second in the Medley Relay. The track season closed with the most brilliant successes ever attained by any track team representing San Angelo. Our team won the State Championship, winning three first places, one second place, and one fourth place. Brothers won the half-mile, running his race in 2:l.2 seconds. This is a new state record. BOYS TENNIS CLUB The Boys' Tennis Club of San Angelo turned out a strong team this year, consisting of two doubles and one singles man. The Bobcats played a number of practice matches with neighboring clubs and were successful in most of them. In the district meet the team did not place. This was because of the hard luck in drawing. Ford Boulware and Judson Clements, who played doubles, drew the strong and flashy Eldorado team, and Lynn Metcalfe, singles player, drew Jack Dale, the district champion, in the first round. Metcalfe's lightning services, often aced plays, took heavy toll in points, but Dale's steadier game eventually won more games and the match. Both teams put up a hard fight and won thc admiration of the crowd by their sportsmanship. Metcalfe was picked to win second, but as he drew Dale in the first round he had no other chance at the game Chapple of Christoval, who placed second.
