VICEPRESIDENT-Doris Dunbar. 4 SECRETARYfTREASURER--Scottie johnson. Four years ago almost a hundred little boys and girls proudly walked across thc stage at San Angelo High School and received their diplomas from Junior High. How sober we were, the girls in starched white middies with green ties, and the boys with green ribbons on their arms. We had grown up! We were going to High School! High School! How the words thrilled us, but the sensation was quite different when we started to school in the fall. We committed all the usual errors-from going into Senior classes to exploring the joys of the detention room. Our chief occupation that year was learning that we didn't know anything. When we were Sophomores, we felt as if we really belonged to the High School. It was a thrill that comes once in a life time to be able to tell those Fish what to do. Our thoughts began to turn to that day when we would be Seniors. How far away, how grown up and dignified they seemed. But the alarming touch is that when we became Juniors, we were less dignified than ever. We just had a good time and forgot all about the dignity we should have been acquiring. We will always look back on our Junior year with pleasure, for we had a real class spirit and pep. Of course we learned our lessons, but the most vivid memories are of cheering at ball games, the sunrise breakfast, the collar fight, and the big masquerade party. Seniors! It doesn't seem as if we have that awe inspiring dignity that Seniors had in the good old days, but we are the same jolly crowd we have always been. We've had our share of term exams, demerits and detention slipsg yet it is with regret that we leave the school where we have been like one big family for four short, happy years. This is the simple record of our high school days. We have not made any mar- velous accomplishmentsg we have not had any daring adventures, but if we have left one little foot print in the sand of time which shows a record of clean sportsmanship as well as scholarship, we will feel well repaid for our efforts to support our dear old school. -Helen Little. iff? , ialmff' .2 :xiii . i ' i ' Ne: A - f af ,- .Z Q .g-.1 --as fwvm. .fi A1.f,T7i k .lsiiii - Page 44 E . 4 6.-'lQi1'3Q lTg,:1 :'- .s Q'f Y 'r ' SENIOR CLASS POEM IF I SHOULD try a thousand years To say what's in my heart About the grandest class of all, - I'd only have a start. SECRETARYfTREASURER--Tom Morrison. SPONSOR-Miss Leola Campbell. HISTORIAN-Harvey Grief. Chapter I The Seniors became Freshmen. I mean the Seniors of Junior High became Freshmen of High School. It was in the fall of 1925 when we came over, a timid set of students, ninety strong. We were lined up on the battle field and received our training from the veterf ans. The Sophs were the ones who did the most to carry out this degree, having just received theirs the year before. Our class went on undaunted. By Christmas we had that proud feeling that we were no longer of the lowest rank in school. We entered the second half year of high school life. Pouring it on the Christmas Fish was one of our pastimes. We had the pleasure of moving forward into a new field of work, although we left some of our fellow students in the ranks of the newfcomers, to try the work again. By this time we were acquainted with the school. We Freshmen did not stand out boldly in the literary and athletic contests. Our failures in these events, however dis- couraging, prepared our way for a glorious Sophomore year. Chapter II ' For we are jolly students of the high school, high school We are a merry, merry crew. We'll show the people of the city who we are, what we are, Down on the avenoofofofon This snappy chorus rang through the auditorium one morning in assembly to' --:ard the first of the 1926f27 school year. Far to the back stood the Fish, murmuring this strain in all shyness. Up near the front stood the Juniors and Seniors, chanting this song with gravity. But 'above them all could be heard the Sophomores, chiming out this ditty in earnestness, some in tune, some out of tune, but all singing with light hearts. This event is only one that marked this school year as one of the most prosper' ous in years. The Sophomore Class organized early in the fall, elected officers and made plans. The football kings, Tom Morrison and Hubert Baldwin received the higher offices. As I predicted in our Freshman history, the Sophs carried off many interschnf lastic honors. Helped by our track men, we there I mean the whole school, took the .listrict cup for having the best all-round athletes. And in literary events-well we still have two more years to show our stuff. ' And here Hubert four president, wishes to give a warning. Now Juniors don't get excited, this is no blackfhand stuff, but Hubert told me to express as mildly as I could that you ought to look out at the collarffight next year. It began with a school, in fact S. A. H. S. Where gum was not heard of and hundreds of tests. The faculty was thereg but the students ruled, And each naughty teacher was sent right to school. Mr. Nunnally was made to act sog And received a lecture when a fishing he'd go. Mr. Smith cut classes like a naughty child And compelled the sad faculty some demerits to file. Mr. Pearson lost interest and shot paper balls, So he was made to stay in the detention hall. Mr. Dykes and Bissett were caught shooting dice, Which made it quite necessary to report the tale twice. Mr. Grant and Miss Gordon too, Were made to work math, by the longest clue. Miss Moss and Miss Rau had notefbooks galore, To be right on time, and not a day o'er. Miss Massey was made every day, To take notes from a Spaniard and tell what he'd say, While Mr. Nunnally and Miss Campbell were trained in delight, To sit up and translate 'til late in the night. Miss Arnold and Miss Fitzwilliams in turn, Were given long poems in one day to learn. Mr. Pope and Miss Woolworth had experiments each hour in the day, And long written procedures in the correctest way, Miss Looney cried, poor little lass, 'Cause she had to wash dishes because she didn't pass. Then, too, she had sewing to be done right, I To keep from ripping out every sitch in the teachers eyefsight. Mr. Lundelius, Miss Elliott, and Miss Rose, Had to be responsible for Wilson, Reed, and Latane, all in one dose Poor Miss Smith got twentyffive demerits for a stall, But that didn't keep her from talking in the 2nd period study hall. Now that was a dream, but gee! what a school, If the faculty changed, and the students ruled. R. fBillj BISSETT Mr. Bissett, an allfconference man at Howard Payne, took up, for his first year, a place on the coaching staff of S. A. H. S. He exhibited some fine coaching and he has gained many friends. In reward for his untiring efforts he was made director of athletics for next year. U. R. QPeterJ WEAVER Uriel, at the end of '25 season was elected captain of the '26 eleven, a position which he held well. He was one of two, threefletter men left this year. Peter's name will go down as one of San Angelo's fighting captains and was respected by all his team mates. wife-1f '1y 7927 JAMES AUSTIN Steve was a hard worker, and though handif capped by injuries, he stayed in the whole sea- son. He is undecided whether he will return next year to stay on the backfield. JAMES AVERA Though james was playing his first year ne was one of the most persistent players on thc squad. He was exceptionally good on snatching passes. The Bobcats hate to lose him. HUBERT BALDWIN Hubert came to Angelo from Oklahoma. He proved a sensation in the backfield. He showed good work in the Breckenridge game and un- doubtedly will star on the '27 squad. NUBBINS COMPTON Nubs was one of the most consistent ground gainers in the backfield and excellent as .1 brokenffield runner. Nubbins will be back next year and we expect him to tear things up. This was Rip's last year on the squad and his place is going to be hard to fill next fall. URIEL WEAVER, Captain Peter was one of the two 'threefletterfmen' left from 1925. He was a model captain, a line plowing quarterback and the hardest tackling back on the club. Peter graduates in june. JOE YOUNG, Captain elect for '27 Ioe was a pillar of strength on the defense and at the position of center. He out-witted, out passed, and out fought every opposing lineman. ara I 1 ff A .X-', -Ryu f j ,f'J'1-'S Y ss XJ Rm , Xl M4 i'. The Schedule is as follows: September 25-Ballinger at San Angelo .... October 1-Abilene at San Angelo ...... October 9-San Angelo at Cisco . L . . . October 16-San Angelo at Ranger .... October 23-San Angelo at Brownwood .... November 6-San Angelo at Breckenridge . . November 11-Stephenville at San Angelo . November 20-San Angelo at Eastland .... The team of 1927 had a great season. Coach Pope put out one of the strongest teams that has ever graced the court of S. A. H. S. Around Captain King was huilt an offense that was seldom stopped and a defense as tight as an Egyptian pyramid. Five left overs from 1926 com- hined with good new material was the combination. Fourteen men saw service during the season. Nine of them lettering, they are: King, Miller, Epps, Hardin, Stewart, Wills, McCamey, Lancaster, and Bates. Seven of these are Seniors and to those who are left, with the help of the fighting suhs will be the task of building just as great a team next year as that of '27. The record of the season was: Wcin eleven, Lost four. Total points 350, Opponents 257. McCamey, captainfelect was high-point man. The infeligihility of one of the players, who had participated in a championship game, laept the Bohcats from the District Meet, after having won the fourfcounty championship. But watch the kittens next year. E.. i ' !,. f fe, X .X . .I , ,Aff x .w -it-1' I T s1:fiS,. 1 U X The San Angelo Track Team had a very successful year even though our boys were hindered by lack of experience. The first meet was between Miles, Ballinger and San Angelo, at Ballinger. The boys lost this meet by two points, but they profited by their loss, because it brought out their weak points. The next meet was an invitation meet held at San Angelo between eleven schools. The San Angelo Boys were in tip-top condition due to the hard coaching of Bill Bissett, and the willingness of the boys. They won fifty'eight points to their nearest opponent's thirtyfsix points which was Winters. The trophy for this meet was a beautiful silver cup offered by the Business Men of San Angelo. The next meet was the District Meet held at San Angelo on March 22 and 23. In this meet, the Class A and Class B sc'hools of fifteen counties were represented by their best athletes. Coach Bissett had the mumps and some of the boys were out due to sickness. Things looked bad but the track team won the meet by three points. , .... . 1 , Q f ,ff The success of the team this year came as a surprise to most of us. To Mr. Dykes goes the credit for the showing the team has made, although it would not have been possible without the help of the few letter men who were left from last year. Some of the games were with the fastest teams in this section, and that explains some of the defeats handed the Cats. However, the team managed to pile up a good percentage, and the work this year will put the boys in trimming for l928. Twenty-five tried for the team and at least a dozen of these are expected to graduate. The starting linefup showed W. George, catcherg H. Cornelison, pitcher: Hardin, first base: E. Dick' itison, second baseg T, Stewart, third base: P. Wills, short stop: and P. Taylor, F. Lawson, and H. Lancaster outfielders. Several other members of the squad also saw service during the season. F. Lawson, veteran baseball player, was the skipper. He made a good one. ff 5 A W fig 'l 4 57 ,Q 7 .5 L, ' f L X? ff X., ,X T. w ,jf N Jmiieqzkw - A 11 -w u 3 iq-f.-4 --,Tn-HWY' - I 1 Em -5--,-lv?
