Smoke 5191141 Here we go into th1s cruel cruel world What will become of us upon leaving Gompers9 We don t know But what has become of us during our three years in Gompers we do know I can readily remember the first day of the bells and buzzers in the third term Yes what fun It was to wire up a bell c1rcu1t the first perlod and listen to lt rlng the next two perlods Of course some of the boys would be confused at first with many wires runnlng back and forth across the boards burglar alarms rmgmg annunclators dropplng Ah that was the life' Come in at 10 00 in the morning and go home while the moon IS rismg at 5 00 P M But the fourth term saw us getting up bright and early to be in school at 7 50 and Mr Blocks face greetmg us in front of 202 Ah yes Mr Block and electronics We were really learning fast By the end of the first week we knew how to solder and by the end of half the term we well we still knew how to solder' We spent the other half of the term 1n Machine Shop playing nurse maid to a lathe We learned safety rules by the dozen' One of the favorite practices of the boys was dr1ll1ng mckels full of holes and mounting them on key chams But Mr Newman sa1d there was no cents to that Now we were ready for Radio ltself What the boys learned most was how to use the tube manual and 1ts value But the greatest occasion were all wlred up was really someth1ng One person would stand over it w1th a fire ext1ngu1sher and the other would be ready w1th the first a1d kit while Mr Leeb plugged in the set with the wmdow pole from behmd his asbestos su1t back ln the tool room which was fire proof Then came the sixth term and super heterodyne receivers and the code class just to show the progress made our speedster Scherf was able to take two words a minute by the end of the term' The seventh term was a sad day for the boys because Al Ronner left us to work wlth the A S P C A When Mr Kellerman heard of this scandal he lowered his head and sa1d The poor kid is really going to the dogs We were taught to service commercial sets and the long awaited shlpment of new equipment and test instruments arrlved Our boys bullt up the shop and helped arrange th panels Too bad we had to leave before we had a chance to use the stuff We finally made it the eighth term' The boys were building Walkle Talkles The only thing wrong wlth them was they wouldnt walk We thought life would be easy but a Mr Barker was around to make llfe miserable The boys were really t1ed down We had to worry about our Ham llcense which meant llfe or death mostly death That wraps up three wonderful years which flew by llke nothing at all It will be good to be gomg out into the world and the field of radlo but st1ll we will often thmk of those days joseph Angellllo joseph Guido 48 O of them all was building our first radio sets.
