E.lIB11 CHANGE-A SIGN OF PROGRESS This year the Yearbook Staff decided on a new policy for the Crescent-more picture pages or perhaps we might say fewer and better written pages. Due to a necessity for keeping expenses at a min:Lmum,we were unable to have as many pictures as we had hoped. But a few were added as you will see. We feel that our school activities are best seen in pictures. We sincerely hope that you will find our book interesting for it is yours as well as ours. Without the cooperation of an interested public no school can carry on successfully. We wish especially to thank all our ad- vertisers and the friends who by their advise and encouragement have contributed to the success of our book. glominigfvafion 6D'Conov84'3 In an effort to raise the standards of scholarship in the school the faculty have posted a list of honor students at the close of each six-weeks' ranking period. That this attempt has been successful my be seen by the following list of honor students: HIGHET HONORS Carlton Berry Norma Fogg Alan Iang Nancy Mason George Pierce Joan Carll Joyce Dean Charles Snell HDNORS Dan Smith Sally Davis Earl Berry Dan Davis mth Berry Sadie Hannon Glennola Harmon Thelma Harriman Roger Betts James Eaton Rita Gerrish Hope Collum Edith Townsend Glennie Townsend Alton Goodson Cedric Palmer Sylvia Smith James Tyler Pauline Pease Student Council President Iouis Enery VicevPres. H UHUH THEMARSHALLPLAN American Legion Prize lssay By Than Cousens '49 A plan has been proposed by Secretary George llarshall,to sate Hzrope. It is a four and a half year program for Drropean reconstruction and recovery based on the idea of self help and cooperation among the nations involved. Due to the destruction by the war of factories, transportat:Lon, and agricultu- ral ms.chinery, followed by the severe winter of 1946-1947 which damaged its crops and caused floods and general disorders,Europe now faces complete economic breakdown. Last July,s:Lxteen European nations met and organized into a Committee of Eu- ropean Economic Cooperation. They were Austria,Belgium,De:nmark,Great Britain, Ireland Eire , France, Greece, Italy, Inxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland , Sweden, Turkey, and Portugal. Germany was not directly represented but would be provided for and pro- tected. They stated their needs and in return for help from the United States agreed to set production goals for 1951 equal to or greater than 1958. They would stabilise their currencies ,try to curb inflation and balance national budgets ,wherever it was possible. They would also reduce trade barriers in Europe. The United States has already invested about 89,500,000,000in European relief and recovery but it has not been enough. The agreement is that unless this is re-en forced by the complete plan all the good thus far provided will be lost. So the Plan asks Congress to authorize the appropriation of an estimated sum of 8 l7,000,000,000 for a four-year periodg86,800,000,000 of which is for the first fifteen months. In general United States aid will be in the form of grants for such things as food, fer - tilizer, and loans for materials to rehabilitate. This plan requires only that Nations receiving help live up to their proposals as to production goals, tariff adjustments and so forth. Argument in support of the plan states thpt prosperous countries make the best customers. World trade cannot flourish with a bankrupt Europe. It is estimted that exports, though :ln general increased during l948,:Lnclu-ding exports for aid, would be less than their peak in Jlme 1949. After 1948 it is planned to decrease exports . The pinch will be felt in shortages but they maintain that certain goods :Ln a short supply will not be provided in quantity requested or will be bought outside the U.S. The President has proposed a new administrative agency with one person res- ponsible to the President under the direction of the Secretary of State on all things affecting foreign policy. This Agency could cooperate with the United States and all other international agencies. The needs of each country are to be handled separately. Each is to pay its own way as far as possible. Some are asking why the United Nations cannot be the agency through which such a plan be administered, but at the present the United Nations does not have the machinery for such business. As originally drawn up last September, the E.R.P. held the expectation that by 1952 conditions in Drrope would be normal again. It was assumed that in four years' time Western Dxrope and Eastern Europe would not be divided by an' 'Iron Curtain . Assistance from the United States was asked to bridge the gap until Europe once more becomes an economic unit. That hope is now dead. Soviet Russia has shown in a number of ways that it will oppose the Marshall Plan wherever possible. Russia is fast form- ing an alliance with her satellite neighbors ,which will all but knock the bottom out of E.R.P. Marry people think that if the plan could be put into action at once perhaps European Countries would not be so hasty to reach to Russian demands. It would seem that the outcome in Europe must follow one of these three lines: AJ Europe will be restored under the capitalist system with a mrch less power ful Germany, but otherwise about as it was before the war. Bl Dxrope will be unified under Communism not as independent nations, but as a group of Soviet satellite states. cy Europe will be permanently divided,as it is now, between AD and BJ. Another question which is being discussed is will the Marshall Plan bring a democratic government to Europe and other parts of the world? No American wishes to sacrifice the sacredness of citizenship or to support any plan which will weaken our democracy. The Marshall Plan must support, not comprcmise, and must make pathways for a government of the people,by the people and for the people X H ff, gn 1. A N,-gag-1 1: , , 4921- X . Zeadme Cheerleaders almys are a welcome addition to a basketball game. We have had a very faithful group of cheerleaders this year. They have been at every game, both at home and away and have done their best to keep the cheers loud'and hearty throughout the games. We are in hopes that sometime in the nature there may be some kind of an award or letter for the cheer leaders which will be as well known as a basketball or baseball letter. Until that V time comes, our hats off to the cheerleaders! This year we were very fortunate in having a faithful body of fans who followed the team on all of its travels as well as at the home games. No one- realizes .more than a basketball player how that group of cheering backers puts spirit into a team. Several times during the season the score changed from a tie to a favorable lead because of that extra basket demanded by a loud cheer. Although we took only second place we had a very successful year from the'viewpoint of sportsmanship and basketball experience. we had hoped to be able to play in the Lewiston small schools tournament but were tied with North Berwick as entrants. we lost to North Berwick in the play-off at Kenne- bunk and so were not eligible to enter the tournament.
