in school to oe tralned, then the town profits by the use of athletics as a stlmulent. The boys and firls of Buxton hlgh School have been asklng for a new gymnaslum for some tlme The present gym 1S located in the Town Hall lt is far from 3tlSIqCtOPV for botn the students and tie town ofilcers. Basketball lS a nolsy game. The players try to be qulet, but there lS no iolbt blt what lt must be dlsturblng at tlmes when the town officers are in thelr offlce and the students are pract1G1ng basketball There are more lmportant reasons for the gymnaslum tlan Just lnconvenlence. these are t e safety factors Many the basketball games and know what Ol tue TomHall as a gym are. The only one 6Xlt constltutes t1e most rection of a new The most lmportant of of vou have attended some of the dangers fact that there lS s rlous danger If tlere were a flre, lt would be very nearly lmpossible for everyone to get out even lf t ere w re no panlc, As it ls, there is a great deal of danger even on nlghts when there lS a small CPOWd,NhlCh lS seldom at a Buxton game. The hall itself lS doubly susceptible to fire because of lts wooden structure and its heating system. Tle small wood stove lS both lnadequate for heatlng and lS also dangerous. As yet, no serlous in Jury has been received by slldlng lnto the hot stove but there lS nearly always a lrst tlme Along with the dangerous features of the lall, there are certaln features whlch are not COHduClV8 to good health The lack of showers, the fact that tlere lS little ventl lation, and the fact that the play rs have to walk from the hlgh school to tne hall ln all trpes of weat her regardless of fhelr susceptlblllty to colds because of persp1ration,make the Town Hall an undeslrable place to hold athletlc contests. There are many uses whlch a new gymnasium could be put to LGSldeS use as a recreatlon hall for tne foung people. Some of the e have already been mentloned in pre vlous essays. Besides those uses that have be n mentioned th new gym could be used as a votlng place ln the elec t1on The Town Hall lS too small for that purpose now and wlll not even nold all of the voters. It could be used as a recreatlon for all the people of Buxton, lt would be DOSS1blG to add studles to +he currlculum be cause of the added space, and last it would be a place of pride and Joy to the p ople of Buxto n. The whole town would profit by renewed lnterest ln education,1n healthier young men and women , and in the know ledge that they have contr1buted to maklng good future Y ' -Y V Y , , Y ' ' Y i 1 . ll l . r L . . . llthough tue capacity for taklng care of the books is completely used, th r should be 1 much wlder field of r ference materlal, We need more up to date material in science, b1o1ogy, chemistry and agrlculture. There should be a wid r llold for the student to cover 1D h1s Engllsh nd hlstory r ad1ngs0 We need a'lJbrary where there lS room for several readlng tables, where there is an adequate catalogue sys tem, where the llbrarlan can get any book that 1S needed wlthout disturblng any classes If we get that, there will be a filing system vhere any student may get any inform at1on he m y wants Tae materlal wlll be flled not only HCCOTdlHU to au 13 but also accordwng to subject matter. The books will be Q ouped so that the student can get all the informatlon he needs 1D one room rather than 1D three different ones Only 1f there lS room to keep all the books, if they are on shelves and lH tuelr proper places, if the student can.get all the lnfornation they need wlthout hunting all perlod, if have proper upGPVlS1On can there be as much return from the taxpayer's money as there should be. C LIE GYMLASIUV what lS the use of having athletlcs in tue high school? That is P questlon that lS asked occaslonally by the citizens of Buxton .Let's try to flnd the answer, Athletlcs are a great asset to terested rfculum, a modern for hlgh any school. They tend to keep tie studerts more in in school than any of the other branch of the cur- for ports are an actlve part of tae cur lculum of school. Many of our students start to make plans school sports when they are ln grammar school. Sports tend to arouse lnterest ln school work Those who enter lnto sports competltlon have to malntaln certain stan dards. If they 1a1l to measure ua to tlose st ndards, they cannot partlclpate ln at letic contests, so hlgher standards are kept by schools that engage 1n athletlcs But, say many of t e townspeople, the students should be glad to alntain 'that standard wlthout t e stlmulatlon of a sports contest. The tneory 1S true, but boys and U1rls need oteer stlmulatlon than thelr studles. The purpose of a school lS to train the future CltlZGHS well If lt fails at tuat tuen the taxpayers are the losers ln the future If sports keep more students 1 . z .L c c Q - . A 1 C C c , .
