Since 1800, speedy, highly maneuverable well-equipped ships known as frigates have operated on the high seas of the world. These capable multi purpose warships have performed as scouts, messengers, escorts and elements of their nation,s security element. The United States Navy has an impressive record of producing superb frigates that have distinguished themselves through outstanding performance. This list extends from the frigates, Constellation and Constitution, to today's finest, USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS CFFG-585. ROBERTS' mission is to provide submarine and surface protection for carrier battle groups, underway replenishment forces, amphibious groups and convoys. Additionally, the ship plays a vital role in operations in support of the War on Terrorism, Counter- drug operations and other missions. Her unique combination of modem sensors and advanced weapon systems allows this ship to fight and survive in today's highly complex environment. ROBERTS' Combat Systems capability allows it to rapidly evaluate threats, conduct rapid and appropriate weapons selection, and near instantaneous response to any postulated attack. The systems aboard the ship have been designed to meet these demanding and dynamic prerequisites and to do so with minimum human interface. Her weapons include the 76mm gun, two 25 mm chain guns, Vulcan Phalanx close in weapons system and anti-submarine torpedoes. ROBERTS is also equipped to carry and embark a LAMPS MK III multi purpose helicopter. The avionics package, airborne sensors, and tactical data systems incorporated in this helicopter allow the ship to locate and strike hostile surface and subsurface forces well beyond the horizon and long before ROBERTS is detected by the enemy's sensors. Rounding ROBERTS' Combat Systems suite is the world's most effective passive ASW system. In todayls combat environment, the ability to respond quickly and effectively is the key to success. All of ROBERTS' systems are designed to meet this important requirement. SAMUEL B. ROBERTS is powered by two CLM 25005 gas turbine jet engines that are similar to those found on Air Force C5-A strategic transport and civilian DC-10 jetliners. They may be brought on line ready to operate in less than one-eighth the time required for a conventional steam or nuclear powered ship. These engines provide the ship with a remarkable responsive acceleration rate and the best capability to react to the needs of the Battle Group Commander in defense of the force. The true heart of the ship, and the reason for the ability to meet all of its requirements, is the crew. High technology, state of the alt systems require skilled technicians and professional leadership. These sailors operate and maintain these systems daily, miles from any extemal support or technical assistance. The ship perfonns and completes its assigned tasks representing the people of the United States because of the dedicated crew who today welcomes you aboard the U. S. Navy's finest Frigate, USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS IFFG-581. 3 I Commander Chuck L. Roberts Holds Change of Command at S621 From USS Samuel B. Roberts Public Affairs EASTERN PACIFIC OCEAN - USS Samuel B. Roberts 5 8? held a change-of- command ceremony at sea Dec. 2, while conducting counter-illicit trafficking operations 1I1 the Eastem Pacific Ocean. After serving as Commanding Officer since June 2007, Cmdr. Wallace G. Lovely turned over command to Cmdr. Chuck L. Sellers. Cmdr Sellers stated that he Hwas very excited to .be taking over the ship from Cmdr Lovely. USS Samuel B. Roberts is one of the best ships m the Navy due to Cmdr Lovely's leadership and it is an honor to receive the mantle of command from him. Lovely began his command tour near the end of a counter-illicit trafficking deployment during the summer of 2007. During that deployment, Samuel B. Roberts provided Humanitarian support to Nicaragua in the wake of Hurricane Felix and participated in PAN AMAX 2007, an annual multi-national maritime exercise. Upon return the ship's homeport in Mayport, Fla. in September 2007, Samuel B. Roberts went into a Selected Restricted Availability period to gear up the shipis material condition for an upcoming training cycle. During the availability, Samuel B. Roberts, Supply Department worked diligently to acquire significant habitability funds, which were used to improve morale and living conditions. Under Lovely's leadership, Samuel B. Roberts' Mess Decks, Chief is Mess and Wardroom all saw significant improvements. The crewis lounge, named the B 's Nest, was also completely renovated to include new computer workstations, new couches, and a TV which is compatible with the ship's Wii entertainment gaming system. To prepare for the current deployment, Samuel B. Roberts began a three-month workup cycle, which included an Aviation Certification CAVCERTJ, Unit-Level Training Assessment Certification CULTRA-CJ, and Unit-Level Training Assessment Engineering CULTRA-ED, as well as training exercises with Destroyer Squadron 24 CDESRON 245 dtuing Group Sail. During his tour, Lovely worked to form an inclusive command atmosphere where all Sailors from the most junior to the most senior learned about the ship's history and vision. Now, when a new Sailor checks onboard, no longer are they immediately handed a ship's ball cap as they cross the Quarterdeck, new Sailors now have a few days to learn Samuel B. Roberts' historv from their divisions and sponsors before they go before the Commanding Officer for theird 6'Ball-capping Ceremonyf' where they are quizzed on the ship's history The Capping Ceremony officially welcomes new Sailors to the Samuel B. Roberts Family and hel s them better understand the sh1p's heritage and values by which its Sailors are expected tid live. 28 -I? N--.K 4, 1988. Itis down below the A ' ' ' ' - l l' ' hell, that sailors call the 'i ni water-line and rt takes a lrving toll A hot meta rvmg Hole. It houses engines run by fuel that makes the shafts go round. g A A place of fire, noise, and heat that beats your spirits down. Where turbines like a hellish heart, with blood of heated air, Are molded gods without remorse, and have no need for care. Whose threat that from the engines roar, is like a living doubt, That any moment would with scorn, escape and crush you out. Where turbines scream like tortured souls, alone and lost in Hell, Are ordered from above somewhere, they answer every bell. The men who keep them on the line and make the engines run, Are strangers to the world of night and rarely see the sun. They have no time for man or God, no tolerance for fear, Their aspect pays no living thing a tribute of a tear. For there's not much that men can do that these men haven't done, Beneath the decks, deep inthe hole, to make the engines run. And every hour of everyday they keep the watch in Hell, For if the turbines ever fail their ship's a useless shell. When ships converge to have a war upon an angry sea, The men below just grimly smile at what their fate will be. They're locked below like men fore-doomed, who hear no battle cry, It's well assumed that if they're hit men below will die. For every day's a war down there when gauges all read red, Flying shards of turbine blades can kill you mighty dead. So if you ever write their songs or try to tell their tale, The very words would make you hear a turbine engine's wail. And people as a general rule don't hear of these men of steel, So little heard about this place that sailors call the Hole. But I can sing about this place and try to make you see, The hardened life of the men down there, fcause one of them is me. l've seen these sweat-soaked heroes fight in superheated air, To keep their ship ahve and right, though no one knows they're there. And thus they'll fight for ages on till warships sail no more, Amid the boiler's mighty heat and the turbine's hellish roar. So when you see a ship pulls out to meet a war-like foe, Remember faintly if you can, The Men Who Sail Below. -Anonymous 62 x-42--.-4-ni-......4x......,......-..-9- ..................,.. .-.. e-. This also includes Reservists deployed individually or with a unit. Half of the deployed LAS are active duty and half are mobilized Reservists. Most are concentrated in the Central Command region, which includes Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Bahrain and the Horn of Africa. The rest are serving elsewhere in the world. Most Sailors are working in their skill sets to provide combat support and combat service support in the Global War on Terrorism. LA Sailors are not replacing infantry or front line combat soldiers. Sailors may be assigned or Volunteer for IA orders that come to their command through a Navy-wide Request for Forces CRFFJ message. If your Sailor receives an LA assignment as a Request For Forces billet through their current command, your Sailor will remain a member of their current command, often referred to as their parent command, and return to it when they complete their IA tour. Sailors may also negotiate for orders with their detailer when they are in their Periodic Rota-'tion Date CPRDJ window. Detailing opportunities provided through the recently implemented Global War on Terror Support Assigmnent CGSAD initiative are providing Sailors with increased opportunities to volunteer for an LA tour at a time that works best for you and your family. Within that small group of brave Americans is an even smaller group of people who will re-enlist and commit more time of their lives to the defense of freedom. During our deployment, 8 HSammy Bw sailors re-enlisted for a combined total of 37 years. As our Navy grows and changes, selective re-enlistment bonuses CSRB'sJ are offered to qualified sailors who fill jobs in great need of personnel. 4 of our sailors received SRB,s for a total of more than Sl73,000. However, in showing the highest degree of commitment, one of our Navyis core values, 4 sailors agreed to 'fstay Navyw for no additional bonus. It is because of the Honor, Courage and Commitment displayed by these 8 sailors, and many more men and women in uniform, that our nation has remained strong and free since 1776. I hope you remember that each of us grew into what we are because of the time we spent onboard this mighty ship. From the long hours on watch, the hard times and late nights working on that job that just had to be complete. To the short , but all exciting port visits in between each, we all grew into the men and women we are today. We are and always will be the crew of the mighty Sammy B. and we made it the best crew that she ever had. We bonded, fought, and grew tired of each other, but still went out of our way to help out a shipmate. We all went out in town to grab a bite to eat and have a few laughs whenever we could. Although many may deny it, we grew into a family. I hope when you look back at this book you see a familiar face. that guy that could make you laugh so hard, it hurt. Or that Chief that would make you so angry bad thoughts ran through your head, but now, you look back and think... uHe wasn't that badf, I hope you look back at this book and remember your time on board and have good memories, we did work hard, and it was tough. But that is what made us the best. We never faltered, we never gave up and we always finished on top.
