THE SHIP OF THE U.S. NAVY TO BE NAMED IN HONOR OF REAR ADMIRAL WILLIAM T. SAMPSON, HERO OF THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR. USS SAMPSON IDDG-101 WAS COMMISSIONED AT THE BOSTON NAVAL SHIPYARD ON 24 JUNE 1961. COMMANDER FORESTER W ISBN PLACED SAMPSON IN COMMISSION AS HER FIRST COMMANDING OFFICER A PRODUCT OF BATH IRON WORKS. BATH, MAINE, SAMPSON'S ARMAMENT CONSISTS OF THE SURFACE-T0-AIR TARTAR MISSILE SYSTEM, HARPOON, ANTI-SUBMARINE ROCKETS CASROCD. TWO 5 INCI-1754 CALIBER GUNS AND SIX TORPEDO TUBES. SAMPSONS MISSION IS TO OPERATE OFFENSIVELY WITH FAST CARRIER AT- TACK FORCES AND TO SCREEN SUPPORT GROUPS AGAINST SUBSURFACE, AIR AND SURFACE THREATS. SINCE HER COMMISSIONING, SAMPSON HAS MADE 'WVELVE DEPLOYMENTS TO THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA. RETURNING FROM HER LATEST DEPIJOYMENT ON 7 MAY 1985, AND HAS PARTICIPATED IN NUMEROUS FLEET EXERCISES IN THE NOR'1'I-IATLANTICOCEANANDTHECARIB BEAN SEA THE SHIP I-IAS ALSO OPER- ATED IN THE INDIAN OCEAN AND THE PERSIAN GULF. SAMPSON PARTICIPATED IN THE FORWARD DEPIJOYED HOM EPORT CONCEPT WHEN SHE WAS HOMEPORTED INATHENS, GREECE FROM 1972 TO 1975. IN 1966, 1967, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1980, 1983 AND 1985 SAMPSON WAS AWARDED THE BATTLE EFFICIENCY FOR BEING THE MOST OUTSTANDING SHIP IN HER SQUADRON.
