i s. .,. V, DD 63 27 June 1916 - 15 June 1921 DD 394 19 Aug. 1938 - 1 Nov. 1945 DDG 1O 24 June 1961 - THE SAMPSON HERITAGE THE third ship of the U. S. Navy to be named in honor of Rear Admiral William Thomas SAMRSON, hero of the Spanish American War, USS SAMRSON fDDG101 was commissioned at the Boston Naval Shipyard on 24 June 1961 under the sponsorship of Mrs. John S. CRENSHAW, granddaughter of Rear Admiral SAMRSON. Commander Forrester W. ISEN placed SAMRSON in commission as her first Commanding Officer. In February, 1962, SAMPSON began the Development Assist Test for the TARTAR Weapons System. Upon comple- tion, SAMRSON was assigned to the newly formed Destroyer Division 182 in July 1962. Shortly after arrival in Boston for major alterations to the missile systems, SAMRSON's first Commanding Officer was relieved by Commander John C. FINNERAN on 15 September 1962. After Commander John L. MERRICK assumed the duties of Commanding Officer on 19 December 1963, the SAMRSON op- erated with the Second Fleet. The ship's first regular overhaul was performed from April to July 1964 by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The SAMRSON sailed for her first Mediterranean deployment on 6 January 1964, but a fire at sea necessitated her return to Norfolk Naval Shipyard for re- pairs on 15 March 1965. On 6 May 1965, Commander Robert F.SCHNlEDWlND, as- sumed the helm as fourth Commanding Officer and returned SAMRSON to fleet duties on 24 June. On 1O March 1966 the SAMRSON de- ployed to the Mediterranean. Her return to Norfolk on 13 August was a triumphant one having both completed a successful cruise and taken the Battle Efficiency Award for DESRON16. Commander Charles A, REED, assumed command on 19January 1967 and took the SAMRSON on her cur- rent Mediterranean deployment on 2 May 1967. SAMRSON took the DESRON 16Battle Efficiency Award for 1967 prior to her ju- bilant return on 9 September 1967.
