EXECUTIVE OFFICER LIEUTENANT COMMANDER Gerard F. Rogers reported aboard as Executive Officer 21 July Woo. He was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and graduated from Wilkes College with an A,B. Degree in Psychology. Following graduate work in Personnel Manage- ment at the George Washington University, LCDR Rogers was employed as a Personnel Analyst with the City of San Diego, California. After accepting an appointment as Ensign, USNR, he completed the Ordnance Officer Course at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and served in USS KEARSARGE CCVA33l as Fifth Division Officer and Five Inch Battery Officer. A tour in USS KIDD CDD66ll as Gunnery Officer followed. LCDR Rogers then served two years aboard USS JOHN S. MCCAIN CDL3D as Operations and Weapons Officer. In l963, he was ordered to the Strategic Plans Division of the Office of the Chief of Naval Opera1 tions where he was assigned for two years to the billet of Overseas Base Officer. LCDR Rogers is a graduate of the U. S. Naval War College, Command and Staff Course, Class of 1966. He holds a Master of Science Degree in International Affairs from the George Washington University. LCDR Rogers resides with his wife Jeanne and three children in Charleston,S.C.

COMMANDING OFFICER COMMANDER Charles A. Reed, USN, assumed command of the USS SAMPSON CDDGTOI as the Fifth Commanding Officer on T9 January T967, at Norfolk, Virginia. Commander Reed graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in the Class of T953. His first duty assignment was to the destroyer USS CHAUNCEY lDD667l, where he served in Gunnery Department billets. This was followed by a second destroyer tour as Gunnery Officer of the USS ROWE lDD564l. The ROWE operated in the Korean Theater in T954 and in the Mediterranean Sea in T955. He served as Damage Control Assistant and Navigator on the USS TACONIC CAGCT7T from T956 to T958, making three Mediterranean Cruises and partici- pating in the T958 Lebanon Operation. Subsequently he served on the Staff of Commandant Fifteenth Naval District, in the Latin American Military Assistance Division of the office of CNO until T96T and as Executive Officer of USS JOHN WILLIS lDETO27l until T963. He was ordered as Aid and Flag Secretary to Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet in T963. He attended the Naval War College graduating in June T965 and then served as Executive Officer, USS CHARLES F. ADAMS CDDGZD until December T966. i s. .,. V, DD 63 27 June 1916 - 15 June 1921 DD 394 19 Aug. 1938 - 1 Nov. 1945 DDG 1O 24 June 1961 - THE SAMPSON HERITAGE THE third ship of the U. S. Navy to be named in honor of Rear Admiral William Thomas SAMRSON, hero of the Spanish American War, USS SAMRSON fDDG101 was commissioned at the Boston Naval Shipyard on 24 June 1961 under the sponsorship of Mrs. John S. CRENSHAW, granddaughter of Rear Admiral SAMRSON. Commander Forrester W. ISEN placed SAMRSON in commission as her first Commanding Officer. In February, 1962, SAMPSON began the Development Assist Test for the TARTAR Weapons System. Upon comple- tion, SAMRSON was assigned to the newly formed Destroyer Division 182 in July 1962. Shortly after arrival in Boston for major alterations to the missile systems, SAMRSON's first Commanding Officer was relieved by Commander John C. FINNERAN on 15 September 1962. After Commander John L. MERRICK assumed the duties of Commanding Officer on 19 December 1963, the SAMRSON op- erated with the Second Fleet. The ship's first regular overhaul was performed from April to July 1964 by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The SAMRSON sailed for her first Mediterranean deployment on 6 January 1964, but a fire at sea necessitated her return to Norfolk Naval Shipyard for re- pairs on 15 March 1965. On 6 May 1965, Commander Robert F.SCHNlEDWlND, as- sumed the helm as fourth Commanding Officer and returned SAMRSON to fleet duties on 24 June. On 1O March 1966 the SAMRSON de- ployed to the Mediterranean. Her return to Norfolk on 13 August was a triumphant one having both completed a successful cruise and taken the Battle Efficiency Award for DESRON16. Commander Charles A, REED, assumed command on 19January 1967 and took the SAMRSON on her cur- rent Mediterranean deployment on 2 May 1967. SAMRSON took the DESRON 16Battle Efficiency Award for 1967 prior to her ju- bilant return on 9 September 1967.
