COMMANDING OFFICER COMMANDER Charles A. Reed, USN, assumed command of the USS SAMPSON CDDGTOI as the Fifth Commanding Officer on T9 January T967, at Norfolk, Virginia. Commander Reed graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in the Class of T953. His first duty assignment was to the destroyer USS CHAUNCEY lDD667l, where he served in Gunnery Department billets. This was followed by a second destroyer tour as Gunnery Officer of the USS ROWE lDD564l. The ROWE operated in the Korean Theater in T954 and in the Mediterranean Sea in T955. He served as Damage Control Assistant and Navigator on the USS TACONIC CAGCT7T from T956 to T958, making three Mediterranean Cruises and partici- pating in the T958 Lebanon Operation. Subsequently he served on the Staff of Commandant Fifteenth Naval District, in the Latin American Military Assistance Division of the office of CNO until T96T and as Executive Officer of USS JOHN WILLIS lDETO27l until T963. He was ordered as Aid and Flag Secretary to Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet in T963. He attended the Naval War College graduating in June T965 and then served as Executive Officer, USS CHARLES F. ADAMS CDDGZD until December T966. You were all there and know as well as I the statistics of this deploy- ment. Each of you has participated in a variety of activities, and hopefully this Cruise Book will help to perpetuate your memories. Personally, this cruise was one of the most satisfying experiences in my career. It was my privilege to lead a group of real professionals in the pursuit of U. S. objectives within the Mediterranean. SAMFSON faced many challenges these past four months. Your response to every to the ten ports of call between the second of May when we departed Norfolk, Virginia and our return. lt is the hope of your Cruise Staff that this tour with SAM P, S, O'NlTE will bring back fond memories of the 1967 MED Cruise during your many years of reminiscing, Tl-IE CRUISE BOOK STAFF situation - whether close aboard afiussian warship, performing Task Group opera- tions, assisting a needy organization, mak- ing friends for the U. S., or winning our second consecutive E - was consistently outstanding. You were instrumental in es- tablishing SAMPSON's reputation in the Sixth Fleet, and believe me it was an enviable reputation, attested by Commander Sixth Fleet, Commander Task Force Sixty and numerous other senior officers. EXECUTIVE OFFICER LIEUTENANT COMMANDER Gerard F. Rogers reported aboard as Executive Officer 21 July Woo. He was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and graduated from Wilkes College with an A,B. Degree in Psychology. Following graduate work in Personnel Manage- ment at the George Washington University, LCDR Rogers was employed as a Personnel Analyst with the City of San Diego, California. After accepting an appointment as Ensign, USNR, he completed the Ordnance Officer Course at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and served in USS KEARSARGE CCVA33l as Fifth Division Officer and Five Inch Battery Officer. A tour in USS KIDD CDD66ll as Gunnery Officer followed. LCDR Rogers then served two years aboard USS JOHN S. MCCAIN CDL3D as Operations and Weapons Officer. In l963, he was ordered to the Strategic Plans Division of the Office of the Chief of Naval Opera1 tions where he was assigned for two years to the billet of Overseas Base Officer. LCDR Rogers is a graduate of the U. S. Naval War College, Command and Staff Course, Class of 1966. He holds a Master of Science Degree in International Affairs from the George Washington University. LCDR Rogers resides with his wife Jeanne and three children in Charleston,S.C.
