toms IDR Nt SAMPSQN J THIS MED Cruise which commenced 2 May IQ67 has brought chills and thrills, tears and cheers to the hearts and faces of the 300 SAMRSONITES embarked. IVAN gave us many chills as he cal- lously maneuvered within and about our formation in the eastern MED. We were all saddened at the news of the tragedy which befell our shipmates in the USS LIBERTY. We were thrilled by the visits to the ancient ports in Malta, Crete, Greece and Turkey where we had the opportunity to partake of the views of the ruins of ancient civilization while sampling the pro- ducts of the local wineries. The looks of grateful appreciation of the little orphans in Izmir cheered the hearts of those who helped refurbish their home. THE SAMPSON'S CREST The Latin motto, Fortes Fortuna Juvat , is translated to mean Fortune Favors the Brave . The dominant color scheme reflects traditional U. S. Navy colors of blue and gold. The lower left portion of the shield commemorates the defeat of a Spanish naval squadron at the battle of Santiago by forces commanded by Rear Admiral William T. SAMFJSON, USN. Red and gold are the colors of the Spanish Province of Castile and Aragon and the lion rampant and castle appear in a crest emblazoned on the Spanish Naval Ensign. The diagonal stripes represent the two previous destroyers named for Rear Admiral SAMPSON, CDD 63l and CDD 3910. The Morning Star lchain macel in the upper right hand corner was chosen as a heraldic symbol of the inherent power of USS SAMPSON CDDGIOI.
