COMMA DING OFFICER Commander William Thomas MARIN was born in New York City, New York. He graduated from the Admiral Billard Academy, New London, Connecticut in 1946 and subsequently attended the U. S. Coast Guard Academy. He then at- tended the U. S. Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1951. His first assignment following graduation was to USS Sarsfield QEDD-8375 as ASW and Assist- ant Gunnery Officer. In 1952 he was ordered to Pensacola, Florida, for flight training and des- ignated a naval aviator in 1953 at Corpus Christi, Texas. He was then assigned to Com- posite Squadron Thirty-Three QVC-335 as an all-weather, night attack pilot. In 1955 he re- turned to destroyer duty serving in USS Brough CDE-1483 as Gunnery Officer, later becoming Engineering Officer. He was then ordered as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to the Commandant, FIRST Naval District. In 1958 Commander MARIN attended the U. S. Naval Portgraduate School in Monterey, California, as a student in the Underwater Ordnance curriculum, grad- uating in 1960. W1 z E' ...li Commander MARIN served as Executive Offi- cer in USS Borie QDD-7045 and USS Barton QDD-7225, and was subsequently ordered as Commanding Officer, USS Avenge QMSO-4235, assuming command on 5 January 1962. In June 1963 he reported to the Superintendent, U. S. Naval Academy for duty as an Instructor of Mathematics. While at the Naval Academy he also served as coach of the Plebe Sailing Team, Officer Representative to the Varsity Sailing Team, and Officer Representative to the nation- al championship Varsity Lacrosse Team. On 15 June 1966 Commander MARIN reported to Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla TWO as Operations and Plans Officer. Commander MARIN studied in the Naval Warfare Curric- ulum at the U. S. Naval Warfare College, Newport, R.I. and was awarded the Master of Science Degree Clnternational Affairsl from the George Washington University, prior to reporting to Sample. He has been Commanding Officer of Sample since 21 August 1969.

But most of all it will, in the future, provide for each of us memories of the outstanding group of men who again proved SAM LE a first line ship able to meet the many and varied tasks required in the SEVENTH Fleet. Upon our departure from WESTPAC, the Commander Seventh Fleet commended SAMPLE stating: HI note with pleasure the outstanding record compiled while serving in the SEVENTHFLT. The crew of SAMPLE has shown itself to be a determined and highly talented group, a fact exemplified by the consistently fine performances rendered in such diverse duties as plane guard, picket duty in the Sea of Japan, and participation in ASWEX. Such versatility is indicative of the proven professionalism of SAMTLE's officers and men, and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy. Lieutenant Commander Everett Jackson DENNIS is a native of Montgomery, Alabama. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the South, Sewannee, Tennessee, and was com- missioned upon completion of Officer Candidate School in October 1958. His first duty was on the staff of Commander U.S. Taiwan Defense Command. In February 1960, LCDR DENNIS reported to USS Los Angeles QCA-1353 where he served as Gunnery Department Division Officer and later as As- sistant Navigator. He was ordered to USS Limpkin QMSC-1953 in February 1962 as Ex- ecutive Officer and Navigator. Following this duty he attended the U.S. Naval Destroyer School at Newport, Rhode Island. LCDR DEN- NIS served as Operations Officer on board USS Laffey QDD-7245 from September 1964 to EXEC TIVE OFFICER April 1966. From May 1966 until July 1966 he had duty in the Surface Junior Officer Assign- ment Section of the Bureau of Naval Personnel. In November 1968 LCDR DENNIS assumed com- mand of River Squadron FIFTY-ONE comprlsed of U.S. Navy River Patrol Boats fPBRD0PeI'at1f18 in the Mekong Delta of the Republic of Vietnam. Following that assignment he joined SaII1P1e as Executive Officer and Navigator in December 1969. LCDR DENNIS has been awarded the BFOHZG Star Medal with Combat V , the Combat Ac- tion Ribbon, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with bronze star, and the Vietnamese Staff Service Medal. He also wears the National De- fense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam campaign Medal-
