XM William Dodge Sample graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy on June 7, 1918. After grad- uation, he served on board the USS Henderson until August 1918. For meritorious service during a fire aboard the ship, he received a letter of commendation from the Secretary of the Navy. For the remainder of the war he served aboard the destroyers Dixie, Trippe, and Wilkes. He continued to serve in the East- ern European area until 1921 when he was sent to the Asiatic Theater as Executive Officer of the Gunboat Pampanga. In June 1923 he was designated a naval aviator and served with several observation squadrons, aboard the carriers Saratoga, Lexington, and as Navigator aboard Ranger. After the out- break of World War II he assumed command of the escort carrier Santee. On April 1944 he assumed command of Intrepid, and on May 29 that year, transferred to command USS Hornet, which participated in operations in the Marianas REAR ADMIRAL WILLIAM D. SAMPLE Islands, in the Battle of the Phillippine Sea, and in strikes against Iwo Jima, Guam, and Rota. In August 1944 as Rear Admiral, he became Commander Carrier Division 24, later trans- ferring to Carrier Division 27 and 22. On Octo- ber 2, 1945 when the plane in which he was flying failed to return from a familiarization flight near Wakayama, Japan, he was reported Missing in Action . Rear Admiral Sample was entitled to the Rib- bon for the Presidential Unit Citation awarded the Hornet, the Navy Commendation Ribbon, The Victory Medal, Transport Clasp QWW IJ, American Defense Service Medal, Fleet Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Vic- tory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Rib- bon. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Legion of Merit and Gold stars in Lieu of the Second, Third, and Fourth Legion of Merit Awards.
