At Sammamish, youths' standards for excellence are high. Those stu- dents with the highest scholarship, leadership, and service records are eligible for membership in the Na- tional Honor Society. Although NHS membership is hon- orary, members are not allowed to rest on their laurels. They continue to serve the school in many ways, one of which is in providing tutor- ing services. The NHS pin must be earned by outstanding scholarship and school citizenship and is kept only by continued effort. Thus Hon- or Society works to promote civic and academic excellence in youth- What should we write in our ephemeris today? ERVE QAMMAMISH What a place to lose a contact! Youth serving Sammamish is strongly evident in the work and achievements ot the Shield. With Mr. Dick Jenkins as advisor, and under the leadership of President Ron Pualani, Vice-president Craig Smoyer, Secretary-treasurer Jerry Owen, and Sergeant-at-arms Art Hyland, this organization followed out its purpose to serve Sammamish High in any way possible. Shield members set up chairsfand bleachers tor assemblies and sports contests at Sammamish, parked cars at all home games, pre- pared tor graduation ceremonies, teas, and meetings, worked in the administrative ottices, and carried out other proiects around the campus. Through these activities the Shield carried out its purpose ot service to Sammamish. DEBATE IDEAS Youth is active, youth is thoughtful, youth debates! Re- solved: The United States should adopt a policy of recipro- cal free trade with non-communist nations. That was the debate resolution for 1962-63. To argue this point, the debate team, under the excellent coaching of Mr. Val Foulbert, competed in many Kingo League contests including those at Western Washington College, Seattle Pacific College, University of Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran University, and the N.F.L. tournament. Ask anyone in debate what he thinks of it, and an enthusiastic answer will undoubtably be received. This is because debate does so much for those who take it. lt is invaluable in gaining speaking ability, research ability, poise, and self-confidence. The lessons learned in debate remain with a student as an integral part of him, ready to be used when needed. The Debate Club at Sammamish is a relatively recent mem- ber of the National Forensic League. This is an honor and one well earned by our debate teams. Under the leader- ship of President Randy Morrison, Vice-president Bob Weler, Secretary Evie Gauthier and Treasurer John Steel, the de- baters work hard to uphold the club's motto: To promote the interest of interscholastic debate, oratory, and public speaking by creating a feeling of fellowship and by con- ferring honors.
