' Today a basic drive in the human race is not to love, but to kill. Nation is thrown against nation, man is thrown against man. Why? For power. Fortunately, another idea, peace, is still alive to check this selhsh urge. As students, teachers, and adminis- trators in schools build tovvard understanding, na- tions of the world's fairs cooperate in the effort to achieve this very goal. With wisdom and comprehen- sion peace can naturally take its place, for under- yflx lit standing is the foundation of peace. In trying to develop this foundation, we, the students of Sammamish High School, dedicate this 1962 Thunderbird to Century Ql in the hope that it will prove successful in furthering the important concept of building toward peace. Certainly not when he graduates from high school or when he receives his degree from college. Education is a process that begins with the first heartbeat and ends when we draw our last breath. Graduates of the class of I962, you have reached one impor- tant milestone in your educational journey, a high school diploma. If you have experienced the ioy of learning, you are well on the way to becoming a truly educated person. For you, education will be a never-ending process filled with new insights, great achievement and a true sense of freedom. In a day when we hear so much about freedom and seem to be so frustrated in knowing how to preserve it, it is well to re- call the immortal words, Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. These words are as relevant to the space age as they were two thousand years ago. May we all rededicate ourselves anew to the eternal search for truth and thus find true freedom for ourselves and all man- kind. MR. This year, however, the talent and spirit of The juniors has made This class outstanding. Headed by Mr. Andy Logozzo, Junior Class counselor and its four ofhcersz Mike Gardiner, president, Dan Stearns, vice-president, Joan Feasley, secretary, and Dave Cook, Treasurer, The class of T963 enjoyed a year Hlled with a variety of class projects and activities. The Junior Class's school spirit and enthusiasm brightly shone next to The other classes during pep week. Its spirit again came Through when students sold black and red pep buttons to promote more school spirit during The football season. Sammamish's own Telephone direc- tory, The Tom Tom, was produced by The Junior Class under The di- rection of its projects chairmen, Gail Beckwith and Carlyn Koch. The sale was very successful again This year for juniors who also pro- duced This helpful directory in Their freshmen and sophomore years aT Sammamish. Of course, The biggest highlight for the juniors this year was their suc- cessful junior prom, Quiet Village, ' held in early November with music by the College Jazz Quartet. The newly formed Junior Ensemble group also provided additional en- tertainment for the semi-formal dance by singing Heather on The Hill and Sentimental Journey. Class officers and Junior Class coun- cil members: LEFT TO RIGHT: Dave Cook, Connie Grau, Joan Feasley, Kathy Nolan, Diana Davis, Mike Gardiner, Peggy Harris, Steve Painter, Dan Stearns, Jim Nevers, Chuck Kuhn, Sarah Stanley and Allison Conover. sn f is X3 2 , 5, i - , , fw, ig, fag :r fx :fffrzfm 'figs' - ' tv e . ,,,L . ,--W, M ,eil -5- GY , .. :g,Ws,5,ii ., up ,rw 35352, M5333 ,,,, , z,f'fzzrf:? - -f 5.145143 r :. ,,,, - , . The twenty-member staFt of the '62 Thunderbird, working hand in hand under the direction of their advisor, Miss Joyce Cole, showed its ability and talent by meeting all ot the five deadlines on time and producing a bigger and better annual tor the students at Sammamish. The final deadline, which was March 23,1962, left the staff free to work on plans for Annual Day, held on May 29, and their Sock Hop, also held in May. The Spring Supplement was also produced by the annual staft again this year, including such spring events as the Senior Ball and Graduation. E The annual statt also received expert help and guidance from Mr. Bill Brant ot Brant Studios in Bellevue, who took pictures for the year- book, and Mr. Ron Childers, art instructor at Sammamish, High, who helped design the cover and division pages for the '62 Thunderbird. Several staff ,members attended both the American Yearbook Workshop at Bothell High School on August 30 and 31, 1961, and the University of Washington Workshop on September 29, 1961. The purposes of the conferences were to promote competitive interest and to share ideas with high schools in the Seattle area and the State of Washington. Only twenty-nine schools in Washington and Oregon have received this distinction. The debaters had a busy season of arguing. During the year the members attended several tournaments, including those held at Seattle Pacitic College, Pacitlc Lutheran Col- lege, University of Puget Sound, the University of Washington, and competitions held by the West District and the National Forensic League. The Debate Squad has had a number of purposes. First, it has been to train students in the processes of argumentation and persuasion, using particularly the skills of delivery, organization of ideas, analysis, and refutation. Second, it has trained students through the use ot research skills, and has encouraged them to think objectively, critically and logically, Third, it has given the students a broad and penetrating perspective of the great social, economic and political problems ot our time. This year, under the leadership of Jim Walters, president, Ruth Ruhlman, vice-president, and Leslie Stewart, secretary-treasurer, the debaters have been busily collecting points for their pins and honorary degrees. To promote and sponsor recreational and sports activities for the girls of Sammamish High, the Recreation Council was formed with the assistance of Miss Dorothy Ann Outz. Nine- teen girls who had previously earned their R for izecne- ational participation in the Girls' Club were selected to be the charter members. Under the guidance of President Carlyn Koch, Vice President Bobbi Gunn, and Secretary- Treasurer Stacy Marlowe, the council planned the girls' sports agenda for the coming year. Activities of the year were the Father-Daughter Sports Night held in November and the Mother-Daughter Fun Night which took place in May. Three play days were also attended at other Kingco League schools, the first of which was sponsored in October by Lake Washington High School. Each of the girls was put in charge of promoting a sport and emphasizing its importance in creating better health, sportsmanship, and school spirit. The group as a whole worked to make known the significance of recreational activity in daily life and to provide a variety of activities to fill the interests and needs of all girls. The three F's of sports, fun, fitness, and friendship, were stressed in the Key, a newspaper put out by the' council and edited under the direction of Barbara McHarg. 73 FRONT ROW: Ruth Friedman, Sharon Gibson, Sandy Lane Kitsy Morse, John Bradford, Terry Uhlenkott, Pat O'Conner, Sheri Lord, Tina Thayer.
