Wright 2 OGCICAUOH For her friendly interest in every student, her unswerving loyalty to Samford, her tire- less work in behalf of every phase of the University and her radiant Christian person- ality, we proudly dedicate this 1973, Entre Nous to Samford's First Lady, Mrs. Leslie S. Wright. Samford's First Lady, Mrs. Leslie S. Wright, is a native of Birmingham. Born Lolla Catherine Wurtele, she re- ceived the B.A. Degree from the University of Alabama and the M.A. Degree from the University of Louisville. Mrs. Wright attended several summer sessions on the old Howard College campus in the eastern section of Birmingham. Several years later, in the spring quarter of 1946, while her husband was still on active duty with the U.S. Navy, Mrs. Wright taught algebra and trigo- nometry at Howard College. Most of her students were veterans of World War II. When Dr. Wright became Samford's sixteenth Presi- dent in September, 1958, Mrs. Wright immediately be- came deeply involved in the life of the University. Her charm and grace made her a great favorite with stu- dents, faculty, trustees and alumni. She loves the stu- dents and has assisted great numbers of them with a multitude of problems. A good listener and always avail- able to lend a helping hand, she knows how to get things done for students in record time. She has served as an extremely valuable channel of communication for students. As the lovely and gracious hostess for a wide variety of University functions each year, Mrs. Wright uses her rare abilities to win friends and influence people for Samford. The President's Home, where she presides with poise and dignity, is a frequent gathering place for students, faculty, alumni, trustees and other friends of the University. A surprisingly large number of happily married stu- dents, faculty members and alumni can give personal testimony to Mrs. Wright's unique talents as a match- maker. She refers to them as her adopted children. A strong supporter of Samford's athletic programs, Mrs. Wright has a special place in her heart for these men. They feel free to bring their problems to her and she gladly helps in many ways. Through the years she has served as an honorary member and sweetheart of the NS Club. Former athletes and others among the alumni frequently bring their children by the President's Home for a visit and renewal of friendship with Mrs. Wright and the President. Extremely active in religious, civic, cultural and patri- otic organizations, Mrs. Wright has made valuable con- tributions to her community and state. Her vibrant per- sonality, quick wit and ready smile have contributed enormously to the growth and progress of Samford Uni- versity over the past fifteen years. Possessing the rare ability to combine the busy life of the wife of a University president with that of mother and h0memaker,she takes great pride in two fine lawyer sons and two lovely daughters-in-law. All four are Sam- ford graduates. Two wonderful grandchildren complete the family circle. 3 . WB- A1 '. - it-v ' , z.,m-fi P ' -' I- - Q . ' '- fp.. Y , . 4 X V..
