Acton Attainment of reading knowledge and in so tar as possible basic ability in writing and speaking the respective languages are the obiectives of the nuclear courses in the modern foreign language courses. To this end the languages studied is to be spoken in the classroom and in laboratory periods and all pos- sible visual and auditory aids, such as movies and phonograph records, are to be used. Newspapers and periodicals are to be used for supplementary reading. Singing songs in the language studied is a regular feature of these courses. 28

The primary function is to pr'oniclf: each student with a basic courze in mathematics, ln addition, they czl- so teach advanced courses for those interested in engineering, chemistry, and the teaching ot rnathernatics. Courses are taught in path theo- retical and applied mathematics. American colleges each year hand out about seventeen thousand diplomas to students in engineer- ing. This important field requires extensive training in mathematics, chemistry, and physics. l-loward's pre-engineering curriculum prepares the prospective engineer for advanced study. Under an agreement with Vanderbilt University, atter three years of study a student can transfer to Vanderbilt and upon completion ot two years of study there will receive his degree. music Associate Professor Fraser yfn ' Assistant Professor Crawford Study of Music at Howard College is designed with a four-fold purpose: to prepare the most talented for artistic careers as professional musicians and for advanced study, to prepare students to teach music either in schools or privatelyg to prepare musicians in sacred music who will serve their com- munities and churches, and to enrich the lives of those who choose it as an avocation. Tomeet these various demands the college offers the degree of Bachelor of Music, with areas of concentration in voice, instrumental music, music education, and sacred music, and the degree of Bachelor of Arts.
