Hard work in youthful daysg determination to accomplish difficult tasks, enterprise and energy in business, and unselfish readiness to serve in public affairs-these are the elements of the career which have made Mr. john G. Burton one of the most successful, most respected, and most prominent citizens of the South. Mr. Burton was born in Walker County and attended the Eldridge Baptist Academy. For thirteen years he was connected with the Central Bank and Trust Company in Jasper. Mr. Burton attained the honor of being elected Mayor of jasper and maintained that position for thir- teen years. For six years he was Chairman of the Board of Deacons at the First Baptist Church of jasper, and he taught a Sunday School class in that church for nine years. Considering every interestof the people as a whole, his progressive ideas and accomplishments have won him statewide and national recognition. Mr. Burton was elected President of the Alabama League of Municipalities and he held an executive po- sition on that hoard for eight years. He came to Howard College in l94-S. Wfith an indomitable spirit and guided by wisdom learned from past achievements, Mr. Burton, as Business Manager of Howa1'd College, is lending his leadership to the further growth and prosperity of one of the most wonderful institutions God ever made. We love him for his friendliness, his interest in people, his strength of character, and his example of Christian living he has set for us to follow.
