Only the spruce tree and the boxwoods lend a note of color. During the Christmas season the APO tree sets everything aglow and attracts pilgrims from over the city. A light snow wraps the world in white for only a few hours, as the last soft strains of the A Capella Choir's carols fade into silence, and the students desert the college for a fortnight in their respective zfzwsmzwf homes. rt' ' I e'l',1f f wwzap of ' It is in the Spring that the campus bursts into full glory! A soft-ball game is in progress in one corner of Berry Field. The band, in brilliant red and blue, is playing a pep-song. Cheer- leaders are going through all sorts of gymnastics. Oblivious of the other noises, ll7l'OllIjSillg candidates for Student Body offices are holding forth in eloquent oratory from a platform near the Bookstore. Balloons are free for all, as are the scuffling of the young fry attracted by the merry- making. There are many visitors to the college at this time of year-alumni coming uhomef' parents of resident students come for afweekend with John or Mary, and prospective students looking us over. Some of the latter join students entering a large bus plastered with the undignified inscription FVUIIFZ7 QIllll'fl'I'.Y 01' Bzzsf, and We know the le Cercle Francais is off on its annual jaunt to the Cresent City. At last comes graduation day. That academic procession of vari- colored hoods forming in front of the Library contains more degrees than a thermometer, and represent colleges in all parts of the World- from Scotland to Mexico Cwith emphasis on Duke and L.S.Uj. The facial expression of 389 Seniors reveals the joy of four years' work accomplished, mingled with the sorrow of departing from these familiar scenes and beloved surroundings. The procession leaves the campus and wends its dirge-like way to Ruhama, the college church, to receive the diplomas which lower the curtain on the college careers of these young men and women. Qur Star-Spangled Banner has witnessed another school year at Howard College. One more year has been added to the 108 years of illustrious history which this institution has known-one more glorious year to crown the efforts and foresight of the Christian founders who began this history with a student body of nine boys-one more year which will never be forgotten by those who participated in it. A flash of color beneath the sky, Qld Glory unfurls atop her IUHSI between Old Main and Causey Gym, and looks toward a new school year upon our campus, a Christian section fragment of the land of the free and home of the brave. ai 7 fl-'SZ v I F Y P s- ...wi ,,,,.,...---',.,..,,..-- jm':i1awa.ea+.24xf -.,Q if ff-,!Z.-r-,Z-' I 7llmfmn ,-H+. g. Considering every interestof the people as a whole, his progressive ideas and accomplishments have won him statewide and national recognition. Mr. Burton was elected President of the Alabama League of Municipalities and he held an executive po- sition on that hoard for eight years. He came to Howard College in l94-S. Wfith an indomitable spirit and guided by wisdom learned from past achievements, Mr. Burton, as Business Manager of Howa1'd College, is lending his leadership to the further growth and prosperity of one of the most wonderful institutions God ever made. We love him for his friendliness, his interest in people, his strength of character, and his example of Christian living he has set for us to follow. DEAN WILLIAM DALE Rare indeed is the man who so completely captures the hearts of all the students who know him. Howard has just such a man- Dean Williani P. Dale. As Dean of Men he receives respect and admiration from all the men he counsels. His classes, too, are indeed popular. His truly genuine sense of humor and eagerness to aid all students may be one clue to his popularity. His unfail- ing courage has meant much to all who know him. E .JN 'aff' i DEAN MARGARET SIZEMORE Few people have an office that is as pop- ular a gathering place as Dean Margaret Sizemore! office is. That's easy to under- stand when you glance about the campus and see evidences of work that come from the Dean of NY'omen's office. And it's still easier to understand when you know Dean Sizemore. She always has a warm welcome for every student who comes to her office, and she! anxious to help and advise. All this experience of Mary's coupled with her journalism and Eng- lish major, produced a smoothly-run and written paper right from the start. The headlines and masthead were changed to give the modern appearance that the front page now has. The editorial page was stressed in the new Crimson. Editorials by the editor and other staff members gave orchids and some onions too, to the school activities and practivities. The Crimson's influence has shown by what was accomplished through its pages. Maybe some controversies were stirred up, but one thing's sure, the readership of the editorial page really went up! The news coverage was made more efficient by the beat system worked out by Mr. limmett Robinson, faculty advisor. The reporting class divided the campus by buildings and departments, and each was responsible for all the news on his beat. Two representatives from each of the four sororities meet with the pur- poses of regulating rush rules, setting up standards of conduct and regu- lations for the various sorority houses. The offices are rotated between the presidents of the sororities. The president, and one other member from each sorority are on the council. Pan-Hellenic, since its beginning has been a unifying force in the sorority life at Howard, and has been successful in promoting friendly cooperation in the activities of the woman's social groups. The FSU Seminoles who had been ranked among the top elevens over the country had to resort to every possible resource to stop the marauding Bulldogs. By the end of the first half the worried Seminoles were leading by a score of only 13-6. 4-Q5 CHARLES HEARN, Guard In the second half FSU pushed hard and came forward to win 20-6. But despite the defeat the game will long be remembered by Howard fans as one of the best of the season.
