CALVIN FORRESTER, President STUDENT The president of the student body at I Inward this year was a man known to all for his never-ending energy, Calvin Forrester. After a very hotly contested run-off between Calvin and Wade Schultz, in which Calvin emerged the winner by a very few votes, our president went righl to work to prove that we had elected the right man. Some of his deeds fur the year include the elaborate decorations for Navy Day, the organization of the nucleus of a hand for Howard, and the organization of a pep squad to accompany our basketball team on all their road games. There are many more too numerous to mention. We are very proud of our student body presi- dent, Calvin Forrester. STUDENT BODY OFFICERS The officers of the student body were one short this year due to the fact that the duly elected treasurer. Ilennie Jean Jones, assumed the duties of a married woman after the spring elections and left school. James Merk and (ienie Rae Slocum have given Calvin Forrester excellent assistance in his job and the entire student body is deeply grateful to them for a job well done. Left to Right: James Merk. STUDENT SENATE 1948 The Student Senate is the highest student governing body on the campus, and is directly responsible to the student body for the con- ducting of its affairs and the disposition of its funds. The panel is presided over by the presi- dent of the student body, who is elected by popular vote in the spring elections. The senators are elected by the classes in their respective meetings. The group is responsible for our annual, our school paper, our student elections, and just about anything that comes under the head of Howard Activities. This is one organization in which there is all work and no play and every member of this highest honored group on the campus deserves a pat on the back for a job well done. We of the staff believe that a student should receive his or her copy of the year ' s annual in the spring of that particular year. By giving you the 1948 edition of the Entre Nous this spring, the succeeding editor should be relieved of what- ever printing difficulties result from overlapping late editions. We hope we have sel a precedent for future dates of edition. 2. Pertaining to the year. You students and organizations certainly made this a lively year at Howard. The photographer and editors became weary at times following you hither and yon in an attempt to record your activities for posterity, hut it was good to know you had that intangible thing called school spirit. It was impossible to record events beyond Christmas. 11)4?, and still meet the printing schedule. For nexl year ' s editor, we did make pictures of varii us events which shall be included in his or her edition. You might refer to us as a scape-goat. 3. Lasting only one year. Add our hook to the other records of college life you ' ve accumulated. The staff will he greatly repaid if you prove Mr. Webster wrong by making our edi- tion a life-long, appreciated pictorial. Albright, who is undoubted- ly one of the busiest men on the campus. Beside running a highly successful newspaper, printing a copy every week during school terms, lie is an active member of a fraternity and engages in all other social activities. The editor of the Crimson is elected by popular vote of the student body in the spring elections and under the direction of Boyce the paper lias been very popular. THE STAFF These are the people responsible for the weekly 1 Inward College newspaper, the Crim- son. This year, under capable leadership both From its editor and faculty advisor, the Crim- son has hit a new high of presenting more news and less advertising than ever before. While there are those among us that felt that the paper was not truly representative of the feeling of the entire student body, the Crim- son nevertheless has spoken with what they consider to be the actual truth regarding any situation. All of us learned some- thing that we did not know about Howard through reading her publication. Had Marjorie Sue and her staff been given more money and time, they could have turned out a fine 1947-48 Bull-Pup ANNUAL. As it finally appeared, it might be referred to as a fine miniature of a really good year book. They managed to take the book out of the technical category which resulted in the crea- tion of an interesting guide for the various phases of college life. For the first time, numerous pictures were used and incidentally some new worthwhile advice was doled out to the freshmen. We doubt if another Bull-Pup of this caliber will be published any time soon. Refer to it often as you will find something new upon each reading. STUDENT DIRECTORY If you think it would be fun to compile a list of every student in college, you would have a good time working with the men of Alpha Phi Omega. Not only do they some- how manage to include the name of every stu- dent in their directory with a minimum of errors but they also include such information as home address, local address, telephone num- ber and religious preference. This year ' s directory was published through the combined efforts of Earl Butler, W. T. Edwards, H. D. Patton, and H. P. Patton. The directory, of course, represents many hours of work. The Student Senate contributed their aid to the publication in a financial way. We are indeed proud of their annual pub- lication and moreover, are glad to include this year for the first time, a page of recognition to the men of Alpha Phi Omega. Jke M .ior Harwell ( i. I )avis, Preside 11 1 DUR PRESIDENT What I Inward College is today is due principally to the efforts of her president, Major Harwell (1. Davis. When he assumed leadership of the school, a very heavy debt hung over it. Today, after seven years of hard work in which all the experience of a long and varied career, ranging from an attorney-at-law to Collector of Internal Revenue for this state, was employed, the college is free of debt and plans have been formulated for the erecting of a new and much larger campus for Howard. Still, our president is never too busy to listen to the cares and worries of the students and the various organ- izations on the campus. He once remarked. ' the stu- dents are the heart of any college, and he is truly a friend of all the students. We, the students of Howard College, will never forget -Major Davis, our beloved president. Beside attending to all the duties incidental to his position as Dean of the College, Dean Burns teaches several class- es each quarter. Bui regardless of all this, his office is always open to any and all students. lie is never too hiisv to take time out to talk over a problem with a student. lie is much responsible for Howard being known over the entire South as the Friendly Col lege. In Dean Burns, we see everything that has made Howard what it is today, lie is a scholar, teacher, business man and Christian gentleman. He is the kind of dean who has made the rules of Howard fit the student rather than the student fit the rules. We, the students, will never forget Dean Burns for when we think of Howard College, we will think of him as he represents every- thing that Howard is today. DEAN WILLIAM P. DALE, II No man on Howard ' s campus will ever forget the ' ' man with the smile, Dean William Pratt Dale, II. Very seldom is he seen when he is not smiling and does not have his ever understanding sister, Mary Dale, with him. In no class on the campus do we feel more free to speak our mind than in his. Without a doubt, there is no man on the campus more fitted to be our Dean of Men. DEAN AND MARY DALE DEANS... DEAN EVELYN SELLERS In the short time that Dean Sellers has been at Howard, she has become an integral part of the campus life. A social calendar giving full information on all social events was one of her first accomplishments and one which we were all glad to receive. Re- gardless of her class room activities which occupy a good part of her time. Dean Sel- lers always ha- time tor all students, men and women, and her office at the head of the stairs on the second floor of Main has become a meeting place lor both s ( nes. Dean Sellers is truly the type of woman college «irls dream of becoming. MRS. HELEN S. KIRKLANE Registrar Our charming registrar ' s office is seldom empty of the puzzled hordes of freshmen, the bewildered maze of sopho- mores, or superior confusion of seniors. Yet, Mrs. Kirkland always finds time to help straighten out our troubles. For her remarkable efficiency, we will ever remember Mr-. Helen Sharbut Kirkland, herself a graduate of I Inward College OFFICERS J ADMINISTRATION MH. LENT 5. BREWSTER Assistant to the President The man with the money is the name by which Mr. Brewster is known to the majority of the students. He has guided the financial affairs of Howard College in a most superb fashion and there is DO matter too large or small for his scrutiny. While he is at the helm of the finances of Howard, we are sure the pen will continue to write in hlack ink. Mil. M. G. GSBDRN, JR. Public Relations Ojjieer, and Staff Another newcomer to our campus, but one that has been needed for many years, is the Office of Public Relations. L ' nder the cap- able leadership of Mr. Osborn, Howard has received more publicity this year than ever be- fore. He and his staff, composed of Mrs. Charles Martin and Miss Rosa Lyon, are to be congratulated on their fine work. MISS MABLE WILLDUGHBY Head Librarian Under the skillful guidance of Miss Willoughby, our library has grown by leaps and bounds the past year. HAMHICK Hostess, Girls ' Dormitory Hammy, as she is better known to every one on Howard ' s cam- pus (especially to the single girls and boys), has a job which few of us desire; thai i keeping the girls in and the boys out. Dr. Richards, in May, 1947. There are student branches of this association located at various schools all over the country and anyone that professes an interest in pharmacy and has completed at least one quarter ' s work in that department is eligible for mem- bership. Meetings are held monthly at which movies, pertaining to the use of drugs, are shown. It is the goal of the president of this large organization, John Cotter, to have every pharmacy student in that department a member, a goal which is being rapidly approached. While the primary purpose of the organization is to acquaint the future pharmacists of America with their chosen field, many of the members belong to various social organizations over the campus. High- lights of the year are initiation into the club, several informal get-togethers, and the annual dance. Tap day exercises are held once a year with basis for membership connected with four areas of life; scholarship, leadership, character, and promise of future usefulness. Men who have shown leadership on the campus compose the membership of the fraternity and at the present there are only fourteen mem- bers. Membership in the fraternity is based on a point system encircling the five fields of religious activities, social activities, scholarship, athletics and publications. All new members must obtain a cer- tain number of points and be approved by the present members before entering the select group. It was recently organized to give those students interested in the study of Spanish and af- fairs of the Latin-American countries an opportunity to learn more about those things and to fester inter- national relations and Feelings between the Spanish- speaking countries and our own country. Several out- standing speakers have led the discussions of the group which meets once a month, and Mr. Maturo, a faculty advisor, was sent to Mexico City, M as a representative to UNESCO. Mrs. Sizemore, in order to eventually bring a chapter of Beta I ' i Theta, the national French honorary society to the campus, asked the people interested in anything pertaining to France or the French lan- guage, to form the club and the res ponse was very gratifying. The club holds monthly meetings where French skits are presented and songs arc sung in French. In the future, it is hoped that French speakers may be brought to these meetings. The purpose of the association is to promote fellowship among the minis- ters, to provide information of prac- tical value to the ministers, to aid in se- curing places of service for its mem- bers, and to promote the propagation of the gospel of Jesus Christ with special emphasis on Howard ' s campus. Mem- bers of the association serve pastorates and supply in pulpits all over the state plus conducting services at many charit- able institutions. Some of these twenty students have gone ahead to reach stardom in the field of drama, such as Mary Anderson, Amasa Windham and others too numerous to mention. The organization has grown through the years with the result that they have, in their short history, produced thirty-eight full length plays, such as My Sister Eileen, and seventeen original one-act plays in addition to several bills of one act. The purpose of the Masquers is to present plays for a college audience and to keep alive an interest in drama on Howard ' s campus. ' .-.I HDME ECONOMICS CLUB The Home Economics Club, better known on the campus as the Betty Lamp Lighters , has as its purpose the enlistment of persons interested in home economics. Activities in- clude instructive programs and social service work which are designed to help the members get better acquainted with their fellow stu- dents and with the field they have chosen as a profession. Membership requirements are set by the club members who themselves are rated on the basis of the amount of time they give to the work of the club and also have to meet certain requirements to remain as mem- bers. It- purpose is to act as an incentive for the Students to set their goals high and then work hard to reach them. Howard College in 1948 had more students elected to this signal honor than during any previous year in its history. Unique is the selection of a man and wife, the two For- resters. The selection for Who ' s Who in American Universities and Colleges is an annual event. This year, each head of a department was asked to approve or disapprove a list of candi- dates drawn up by the Dean of the College of those students having completed their jun- ior year and possessing certain other requisites. Who ' s Who is published annually and is a compilation of biographies of the outstanding Students in America. To he selected, a stu- dent must have a combination of qualities which include character, leadership, scholar- ship and potentialities of future Usefulness to business and society. It is certainly a crown- ing honor for a college career and a valuable recommendation in later lite. HIGHLIGHTS OF ANOTHER YEAR DF THE YEAH... MEAN GREEKS WILL ALWAYS BE PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL The Pan-Hellenic Council is composed of two representatives from each of the sororities on the campus with the primary purpose being to coordinate each phase of sorority life Oil the campus. This year the Council functioned quietly and smoothly and there was absolutely no criticism of the sororities b) anyone. An orchid is due each of the members for their splendid work and the manner of cooperation with which they approached all problems. The Council, which was founded for the pur- pose of determining the policies of the Greek-letter societies on the campus, not only did 1 their job well insofar as that one particular thing was concerned. They went out of their way in doing more and better things. The Council sponsored a drive for funds for the Troy Orphanage Fund during the months of Novcm- ber and December, 1947, which netted a tidy sum in! ' that institution. All of these funds came from donations of the students and faculty members. The boys also sponsored a Musical Night presenting an All- Howard cast that was the talk of the campus for many days. In addition, the Council gave one of the best dances of the year at the Pickwick Club during the month of November, 1947. The event was one of the most colorful of the year and one which none of us will forget for a long time to come. The Inter-Fraternity Council is composed of two representatives from each fraternity on the campus. Tin group this year gave us an excellent portrayal of just how well different organizations can work to gether providing that old spirit is present. In spite of outstanding loyalty to each other, the girls of Kappa Chapter have di- verse interest and engage in many activities. The Sorority has members in the Baptist Stu- dent Union, Student Senate. Tile and Mortar. Spatula and the Wesleyan foundation. Also. Genie Rae Slocum, the Secretary of the Stu- dent Body, and Marjorie Sue Barclift, editor of the Bull-Pup, are active members of the Sorority. These young ladies belong to all of these various and sun-dried organizations and yet find time to maintain excellent grades in their school work. The A. D. Pi ' s have many outstanding alum- nae scattered over the entire United States and Miss Mary Anderson, who chose the beau- ties this year and is one of the leading actress- es of Hollywood and Xew York, is a former A.I). Pi. She and Helmut Dantine visited the Sorority House during their stay in Birming- ham and we still have not figured out which one of them caused the most furor. The social activities flew thick and fast for the A. D. Pi ' s this year with an elaborate party being given the actives by the pledges at the Mountain Brook Country Club. There are Beta Sigs in Hypatia. Mu Alpha Chi, A Cappella Choir, Glee Club, Masquers, W.A.A., Dormitory Council, Baptist Student Union, Kappa Pi and the Home Economics Club. But the girls do not devote all of their time to studies and campus activities as is evidenced by the Fact that Martha Ann Ingram was run- ner-up in the 1 ( 47 Miss Alabama Contest and ua selected as Dream Girl of I ' i Kappa 1- pha. She, al ong with Nelda Ruffin, partici- pated in the 1948 BEAUTY PARADE and Martha Ann came in in the first six beauties of the year. Nell Rae Sample, the president of this or- ganization, is also president of the Pan-Hellenic Council and Society Editor of the Crimson. She was among the eighteen students elected to Who ' s Who in American Universities and Colleges for 1948 and has done a wonderful job in leading the Beta Sigs in a full year of activities. Dances come and go, winter changes to spring, tunes become popular then die oul completely — but Beta Sigma Omicron remains the same, traveling an upward path in the ful- filment of an unselfish purpose. Helen llarrell. its president, is a former editor of the Crimson and was listed in Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Uni- versities for 1948. The D.Z. ' s also have sev- eral members in Ilypatia. had three members in the Beauty Parade, and though they lead a very active social life, they do not allow their social activities to effect their scholastic stand- ing on the campus. One of the outstanding events of the fall term was the Delta Zeta dance given at High- land Park Country Club where the Christinas Tree setting, with sled and all. was employed in the lead-out. In addition to this wonderful dance, many other social activities were partici- pated in by the sorority. The Delta Zeta ' s have a soundness of pur- pose and a thoroughness of organization which is hard for any other organization on our cam pus to excell. Here is a group of young ladies who excell scholastically, place representative teams in all sports on the campus, do a large amount of charity work- outside of the campus, and have an abundance of pulchritude in their midst. If you belong to an organization, chances arc a Phi Mu holds an office in it or takes a very active part. If you have an eye for beauty (and who doesn ' t?), the five Phi .Mil ' s in the beauty parade, and especially that eye-appealing Miss Billye Walker, should more than satisfy one. The sorority has two members, Helen David- son and Jimsy Murphree. in Hypatia which shows that one may ]m,w-.s both beauty and brains. Jimsy was also selected for Who ' s Who in American Universities and Colleges. The girls of Phi Mu are to he praised for their splendid work at the Jefferson Hospital. They maintain a toy cart in the children ' s divi- sion of this large institution and this cart al- ways has games and toys for the little ones. The sorority also maintains a full social calendar giving parties for the fraternities, teas, and their annual spring formal. It would he difficult to find any group on the campus where the Phi Mu Sorority was not represented by one or two members. The fraternity which but four or five years ago had only sixteen members has grown to a full fledge yearling ' - with .some forty-seven members. And as for quality, the fraternity is well rep- resented in practically all phases of campus activity. Davis O ' Kelley is the candidate for honors this year and Janus Merk, its very personable and capable president, is vice-presi- dent of the student body plus being a regular on the basketball team. The Lambda Chi ' s were represented this year by good teams in all of the intramural sports. Their Softball team was one of the hardest to heat and their football team came very close to stopping Mu Alpha Nu when the two teams met. We are expecting great things of their basketball team this fall. As usual, the Lambda Chi ' s took time out from their work of keeping every member busy in some phase of campus life to entertain at many socials. There were several swell ban- quets and their annual dance is one which we are all looking forward to in the spring. It has class officers in each of the upper classes, members in the Student Senate. Editor of the Howard Crimson, President of the [nter-Fraternity Council, members in the A Cappella Choir, B.S.U., Trident, and other honorary fraternities on the campus. This year an old pre-war tradition was revived of a four chapter rush party, consisting of a stag banquet and then a dance for members and rushees of Howard. Birmingham-Southern, Auburn and the University of Alabama. Alpha Pi Chapter began the year with 55 active members and after a very suc- cessful rush season, had 18 pledges. Socially, the four chapter Founder ' s Day Banquet and Dance was the highlight of the year with the Mother ' s Daj Banquet, annual house- party and formal dance also adding to the highlights. These main events were supplemented with many other par- ties, picnics and hay-rides. The Pikes won two out of three of the fraternity trophies in the field of intramurals last year and are out with a great determination to make it three out of three this war. MEMBERS Bo i e S. Though the fraternity has the smallest mem- bership of any on the campus, the members have been outstanding contributors to campus life. The building so commonly known to all ol us as Duration was at one time the home of the Pi Kappa Phi ' s but during the war years. the house was lost due to financial reasons and the fact that the chapter was hit very heavy, giving up most of it members to the armed forces. The road hack to the pre-war heights lias not been an easy one hut with the I ' i Kappa Phi spirit and determination, the chapter is Staging a tremendous come-back and all of us arc urc it will not he too long before the Pi Kappa Phi ' s are once again resting in their original home, although there might he some discussion of this matter by the other frater- nities on the campus. Ed Speer has proven himself to he a ' ' ball of energy and has kepi the fraternity alive with his never dying spirit. The hoys have enjoyed an easy social life and have made a good record scholastically and we are looking for greal things from them in the coming years. The fraternity is pledged to helping develop sound c haracter, enabling a social development whereby a man understands and appreciates his fellow men and aiding the work of the classroom by stimulating in- tellectual interests. ATHLETIC DIRECTORS Regardless of the fact that Howard was not allowed to field a football team this year, when there was more good football material on the campus than ever before in its history. How- ard ' s athletics did not do a swan song but rather gathered momentum under the capable leadership and guidance of the directors of physical education. Coach McCarver did every- thing in his power to bring unsubsidized foot- hall to Howard but met with obstacles at every turn, principally from that faction named Trustees. We know that our football team would have been a success under his direction as he was captain of his high school and also his college team and coached four years of football at Howard Payne College in Texas, bringing in the championship each year. In addition to excelling in football. Coach Mc Carver was also outstanding in basketball and track during his school days and later coach- ing days. This is easily seen by the fact that 1 toward had a very successful track team last year. Incidentally, this was the first track team I toward had had in years. Coach McCarver was very ably assisted in a J CHEERLEADERS his duties of keeping sports alive at Howard by Miss Helen Y. Lewis, who joined the staff this year, and Coach Herman W. Roberson, also a newcomer. The addition of these two excellent instructors brought Howard ' s physi- cal education department up to the state re- quirement for colleges desiring majors in physical education. Now, the instructors in this department all have masters ' degrees. Miss Lewis put new life into the sagging girls ' athletics by stimulating new interest in this field. She has many interesting events lined up for the coming year and women ' s athletics at Howard have definitely taken a turn for the better. Coach Roberson came to Howard to take over the duties of assistant in physical educa- tion and leadership of the basketball team from B. B. Comer Memorial School at Sylacauga, Ala., where he was haskethall coach. He was a haskethall star at the University of Alabama, where he received his master ' s degree. He is a ex-Gob having served overesas at Saipan and shipboard duty on the Shangri-La. While in the servic e, Coach Roberson played basketball at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station, Jack- sonville, Florida, and at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Due to the fact that we, the staff of this year ' s Entre Nous, are meeting our publication date (something that has not been done in years), we were unable to cover the complete year ' s activities of our basketball team. I! CLUB The II Club is composed of all the athletes on the campus who earn a letter in a major sport and merit the approval of the general body. Its purpose is to encourage good sportsmanship on the part of the athletes and to give direction to their social activities. Since football has been discontinued, most of the members compose the basketball and track teams but there are still one or two old football players of yes- teryear around who had their education interrupted by World War IT, such as this year ' s president and vice-president. Donald S. Beaird was selected by the mem- bers (if the club as the outstanding intra-mural athlete of the year and was elected to the club as an honorary but active member. The organ- ization has a two-fold purpose. Its most impor- tant purpose is to promote better sportsmanship and its secondary motive is to create an in- terest in activity for its own sake. Any female student may become a member providing she re- ceives outside of class period a minimum of one hundred points in one sport. A minimum of one hundred points must be received every quarter in order to retain one ' s membership. The organization has succeeded in their goal of making every girl sport ' s minded. We would like to poinl ut that I Inward Col- lege has been the source for many outstand- ing cage -tars for teams all over the city and slate. It seems that back in 1942, the college was fortunate enough to have the services of a number of these outstanding players on a team which wore uniforms of Crimson and Blue. This team made a record the post-war team have been unable to come anywhere near approaching. The reasons for this situation apparently were due to the lack of financial assistance rendered these boys by the college and the presence of appealing offers made by the various professional teams. A dream team of any coach could have performed for How- ard composed of Bub Hall. Wheeler Flem- ing. Abe Epsman, Clarence Slaughter, Deric Edgar, Horace Peterson and Frank Fleming. We certainly do not intend to imply that our collegiate players are sub-par. They just happen to be those fellows who have placed more emphasis and shown more interest in their chosen school than others. For them. we are indeed grateful. We believe we are accurate in predicting that some of these boys will go on to pro ball after having done excep- tionally well as college players. ( ur team this year, under new manage- ment, has started off with a bang. We are sure that the season will end a success and that the players will make a creditable show- ing for themselves and for Howard. VL PLAYERS EARL GARTMAN — Gartman, a former Howard athlete, lias proven himself to be an excellent defensive man. He is also a good long shot and fitted nicely into Howard ' s set-play basketball. MILES DEAN — Dean played on several of Howard ' s teams before the war. This year, he proved himself to he an excellent rebound and break awav man as well as a grood one-hand shot. BUFORD MADDOX— Maddox is a transfer student from Okla- homa A. M., where he played basketball under the famous coach, Henry Iba. He is an excellent set shot artist and a good defensive man. JAMES MERK— Small but fast is Merk and good at stealing the hall from his opponents. Merk is one of the team ' s best set-shots. DEAN SPARKS LOWERY SISSOX GARTM.W FRANK WADSWORTH -An excellent fast break man and one of the team ' s best pass- ers, Wadsworth is a transfer student from Auburn where he lettered in basketball. JOE DAUGHERTY— The smallest man on the team but also one of the best set shots is Joe Daugherty. He is a team player and can make set plays work. BENJAMIN BALL (PAP)— Old reliable, is another name for Pap who is an excellent defensive man and should play a lot of ball next year for 1 loward. GERALD DORSKY— Dorsky is a transfer student from the University of Alabama and an ex-Phillips High star. He is a tricky for- ward and a good one-hand shot. DAUGHERTY EMORY LOWER V— Tall and rangy but handicapped by a knee injury, Little Emory is very good at feeding balls to players and using one-hand for shooting. HOWARD SISSON— Another former How- ard athlete before the war, Sisson is a fast. good one-hand shot and plays a driving type of game. BEAMON SPARKS— The youngest man on the sqnad and one with the most promise. Sparks is an excellent rebound man and should play a lot of ball for Howard in the future. J nL rainum ( FDDTBALL The sport thai grabbed the spot-light at I Inward this year was football (intramural, of course). When tin- season opened, it was predicted that the II Club would come through on top. These boys maintained a tine record until they met Mu Alpha Nu who up- set tin- dope-bucket by defeating the ath- letes of Howard. From then on in to the dose of the season, Mu Alpha Xu had clear sailing although they did have difficulty Met- ting around Mich teams as Sigma Xu and the Pi K.A s. But when the smoke of battle had cleared (and believe me. some of those touch football games came close to being tackle). Mu Alpha Xu was on to]) of the pile in first place for the second consecutive year, having won the intra-mural trophy in I ' M . _ 1 The final standings were : Team Won Lust Tied Pet. Lovette, Creel. 1 t. mramviya SDFTBALL There were two softball seasons at Howard this year, one in the Spring quarter, the other in the Summer quar- ter. But the directors advised that the spring quarter was the one of most im- portance and took preference over the Summer quarter. There were some very hotly contested games during both quar- ters but it seems to be the concensus of opinion thai the game between A. P.O. and Mu Alpha Xu during the spring quarter was the best ame of the entire season. This game saw Mu Alpha Xu nose out the ex-boy scouts by a one- run margin in the last half of the ninth inning in a real thriller. Once again, Mu Alpha Xu ended up the season by taking the pennant dur- ing the Spring quarter. However, the II Club came back strong in the Sum- mer and the pennant changed hands. After the final intra-mural game during the Summer quarter, an All- Star Team was picked by the coaches. These boys played Birmingham-South- ern two games, one at Howard which ended in victory for our team, and the other at Birmingham-Southern, which wast lost in the last half of the seventh inning by one run. TRACK, TENNIS Tennis Team Merk, Lowery, Ball Our track team this year proved that Howard did have sonic potential stars Oil their campus who could, with the proper training, take their places along with the other great tars of track at Alabama, Auburn and other schools. Our team did not win all of its meets but Howard was very well represented. Coach McCarver did a wonderful job of getting the boys into shape. Without the aid of scholarships and with very little financial backing for the buying of equipment, uniforms, etc., he produced a team which competed on an equal ba i with ome of the lest in the state. The entire student body was proud of the showing of the track team. The Follow- ing men made their letter in track: Pap Ball. Bill Farrar, Ed Fullington, Don Beaird, Bill Hacker. Jesse Meeks, and Jack Crouch. e I ff 1 1 ARK V WENGER and BOXING... The tennis team of 1947 was com- posed of Pap Ball, Bill Peeples, Emory L Owery, James Merk and Denward Da- vis. The team was organized too late for many intercollegiate matches. How- ever, they met Birmingham-Southern in two matches, losing the first by 7-0. The second match was a real battle with Howard ' s Peeples, Ball and Merk win- siiin 4 the singles from Birmingham Southern ' s top stars hut losing in the doubles. Plans have been made by the Physical Education Departmenl to field an intercollegiate team with a full sched- ule for the coming year. Boxing and weight lifting, handball and ping-pong all take a prominent place in Howard ' s athletics. Marry Wenger, who lost his sight in action during World War II, is an expert at the punching bag. I te can hit the bag with as much regularity as anyone. Clarence Mayo is another one of the hoys who can hit the bag and also is one of the few- men at Howard who can pick Up all of tlie weights, totaling around 285 pounds. WOMEN ' S ATHLETICS The women ' s ath etic ' s star is in its ascendency at Howard due to the ef- forts of its excellent director of Wom- en ' s Athletics. Miss Helen Lewis. The girls have become interested in basket- ball, volley-ball and archery and arc showing real prowess in the use of the bow and arrow. Teams have been organized for volley-ball and basketball and some of our girls act very un-ladylike when they get on the court. But it is all in the spirit of fun and good sportsmanship always prevails. We are looking for big things out of our young ladies in the future. Something new that was added to Howard ' s campus during the past year was the Married Veterans ' Apartments, erected by the government and main- tained by the school. Jne SINGLE VETS When most of the fellows were dis- charged from the armed forces, they never thought thai soon they would be sleeping in the same barracks they oc- cupied during that tour of duty. How ever, that is exactly what happened to the men on Howard ' s campus who oc- cupy the Single Men ' s Barracks. While there are not so many feet sticking up from under the cover when a man wakes up in the morning and looks around. there is still that long trek down the hall and into the washroom where everyone congregates at one time to attend to the essentials of appearance. With all of this, however, the men sleep just two in a room and find things really comfortable and at a very cheap price. At least they do not have to worry about guard duty. All they have to worry about is class-room dutv. Home Is Where You Hang Your Hat m ; Downstairs Where We Begin the Day NAVY DAY... A day few of us will forgel took place ii Navy Day. 1947 at Howard College. Admiral William i Bull | I lal- sey came to our campus on that day and presented a bronze plaque to Major Davis and the school for their part in the training i Naval personnel under the V-12 program at the school during the war years. One of the largesl crowds ever assembled on Howard ' s campus heard the Admiral speak before Old Main which the Student Senate had decorated beautifully and were sur- prised when the air was filled with bal- loons when the Admiral finished speak Howard College added another feath- er in its cap of so many feathers on that day and it made every one of us very proud to be a member of such a fine institute in. Their Diaper Parade came very near to taking the spot-light away from the annual Beauty Parade. The idea for the contest was conceived and de- veloped by John Dodd who deserves all of the credit. Ten entries from dif- ferent organizations on the campus were received and the pictures of the babies were posted on the bulletin board of Main. Voting was done by contribut- ing money to one ' s favorite. Little Joe Burr Tucker, sponsored by the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, came in with first prize with Ann Dodd, Home Economics Club, and Ruth Lee Size- e voW THE WINNER more, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, being the runners-up. Over $150 was raised by this worthy project and turned over to the World Student Service Fund. The winner was crowned at a chapel period and presented with a silver cup given by the Women ' s Auxiliary for Howard College.
