He's played football. Heis earned conference track honors. He's served in the U. S. Navy as an officer. He's worked on a milk wagon. Heys had the truant officer on his trail for playing hookey . . . and even quitting high school to work on ships. He's won college honors for scholarship. He's been a B. S. U. president. He can put his hands in his pockets, slump up against a tree and talk understandingly with poorly educated folk and make them feel at ease, or he can take his Ph.D. and good common sense up on Svvanky Row and look comfortable with a tea cup balanced on his knee. He has all the ideals of a person who puts Christ foremost in his de- cisions . . . and yet, he has the practicality of the man who has lived among men from all walks of life and understands their problems. Teacher of Bible and theology and New Testament Greek, a holier- than-thou look from a goody-goody would give him the he-begebees as much as it would you or me. He has the rare and simple gift of seeing human beings not in the light of their shortcomings or accomplishments, but in the glory of what they can be. He can get down on the level with a student without sacrificing dignity. To him the Christian life is the abundant life that doesn't have to wait until Judgment Day to be beautiful and is simply the product of rever- ing God and loving mankind . . . all of it. Because he's genuine and sincere and humble and idealistic and un- compromising and down-to-earth, we're getting a big kick out of dedi- eating' this year book to. DR. VERNON G. DAVIDSON CATICDN..

ALMA MATER Oh, Howard, Alma Mater true, I love thy glorious name, deserving every honor due To an unsullied fame. I'll love thee through each fleeting breath For all that thou has done, And in the agonies of death Be still thy loving son. Oh, Alma Mater, dear, thy life A treasure is to me: Thou, Phoenix fair, through flames and strife, Hast shown thy right to be. Since poverty has made thee rich, And struggle made thee strong, I View thee in thy self-made niche, And burst to filial song. i 1 ., -v--- Y' Oh, parent true, the future fair Must hold but good for thee, For hopels fruition waits thee there In blest reality. And sons like thine will make thee shine With glory all thine own, And bring to thy maternal shrine Not gifts of gold alone. Words by Dr. G. VV. Macon, '84 Music by Prof. Paul DeLaunay
