Lt. C. A. Schade, Coninianding officer said The flag is being given to the college to place among its archives. May it never again be used in wartime. if NAVY UNIT .An ,xgppreczfalfion The wi1111i11g of the war bri11gs to a close the Navy V-12 College Train- ing Program i11 Howard College. In the opinion of the Administration and Faculty of the college it has been at every point a good program. Every officer and enlisted 1112111 who has been assigned to us l1as 11Of o11ly measured up to the traditional standards of the Navy but has show11 an appreciation of our problen1s a11d aided in their solutio11. The Y-12 Program has brought to us students of high quality, 111a11y of whon1 have adopted Howard College as their own, have won high schol- astic and artistic ho11ors here, and have given color and i11terest to every student activity. As the ship's company leaves us-officers, enlisted 111611, and apprentice S621Hl211l1XVC salute then1 all with ad111iratio11 touched with affection and express the hope that the recollectio11s of their service at Howard College may be as 1JlCE1S211lt as the recollections Howard College will have of them. Lord, guard and guide the men who fly Through all great spaces of the sky, Be with them traversing the air. In darkning storms and sunlight fair, Oh hear us when we lift our prayer For those in peril in the air. Oh Trinity of love and power, Our brethren shield in dangers hour, From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them whereso-ere they go, Thus ever let there rise to thee Glad hymns of praise from air and sea ZAQDEE He's played football. Heis earned conference track honors. He's served in the U. S. Navy as an officer. He's worked on a milk wagon. Heys had the truant officer on his trail for playing hookey . . . and even quitting high school to work on ships. He's won college honors for scholarship. He's been a B. S. U. president. He can put his hands in his pockets, slump up against a tree and talk understandingly with poorly educated folk and make them feel at ease, or he can take his Ph.D. and good common sense up on Svvanky Row and look comfortable with a tea cup balanced on his knee. He has all the ideals of a person who puts Christ foremost in his de- cisions . . . and yet, he has the practicality of the man who has lived among men from all walks of life and understands their problems. Teacher of Bible and theology and New Testament Greek, a holier- than-thou look from a goody-goody would give him the he-begebees as much as it would you or me. He has the rare and simple gift of seeing human beings not in the light of their shortcomings or accomplishments, but in the glory of what they can be. He can get down on the level with a student without sacrificing dignity. To him the Christian life is the abundant life that doesn't have to wait until Judgment Day to be beautiful and is simply the product of rever- ing God and loving mankind . . . all of it. Because he's genuine and sincere and humble and idealistic and un- compromising and down-to-earth, we're getting a big kick out of dedi- eating' this year book to. DR. VERNON G. DAVIDSON CATICDN.. ALMA MATER Oh, Howard, Alma Mater true, I love thy glorious name, deserving every honor due To an unsullied fame. I'll love thee through each fleeting breath For all that thou has done, And in the agonies of death Be still thy loving son. Oh, Alma Mater, dear, thy life A treasure is to me: Thou, Phoenix fair, through flames and strife, Hast shown thy right to be. Since poverty has made thee rich, And struggle made thee strong, I View thee in thy self-made niche, And burst to filial song. i 1 ., -v--- Y' Oh, parent true, the future fair Must hold but good for thee, For hopels fruition waits thee there In blest reality. And sons like thine will make thee shine With glory all thine own, And bring to thy maternal shrine Not gifts of gold alone. Words by Dr. G. VV. Macon, '84 Music by Prof. Paul DeLaunay ADMINISTRATICDN WPRESIDENT MAJOR HARVVELL G. DAVIS ln this, our Back To School Editionw of Entre Nous, the first person to whom We look as an outstanding figure in readjusting Howard to nieet the needs of the veterans is Major Harwell G. Davis. VVe know we can place our utmost confidence in the Majorn to guide us nolaly through the peaceful years ahead, as he so safely led us through the years of war. ln his attitude of friendliness and helpfulness we find the true spirit of Howard. MR. EZELL Mr. S. Ezell, our Vice-President, is not so often seen around the campus. But through his work we know that he han- dles college business which falls his lot, lmoth calmly and efficiently. XVe are sure we owe him much appreciation. DEAN BURNS Dean Burns is like a good hook-XVe want to get all the knowledge we can from him. His love of Howard and his desire for her iniprovement are revealed in his tire- less efforts to advance Howard in the field of learning. Because of his friendly cooperation to every individual associated with Howard we feel that we can go to him any hour of the clay for advice and he perfectly welcome. DEAN DALE Our Dean of Men is well suited to his post. He always welcomes students prob- lenis-either personal or pertaining to scholastic endeavors. Famous for his wit and understanding he has been a grand aid in helping with the reconversion ef- forts. DEAN OBENCHAIN Our Dean of Wlonien is also a constant advisor for the men. Dean Obie is an open-minded, frank person. ln no class on the campus do we feel more free than hers. One of the first friendly personages we meet when entering Howard she is also one we hate to leave when grad- uating. MR. l3RlCNVS'lllCR MRS. KIRKLAND Lent S. Brewster, hotter known to the students as the nizin with the money has served Howzlrcl efficiently yet underf standingly as Assistruit tu the Prcsiclcnt. Mr. lirewster tliruugli his fum-siglitecliiess has successfully steered the seliuul in all matters of finance. Fur his splendid work and outstzxnrling ability we duff our hats. The first person we students see and us- ually the last one is our registrar, llelen Sharbutt liirkland. L ADMINISTRATION BUILDING T Ute STUDENT oovtkmfvxtmt For our annual, our school paper, our student elections, our chapel programs, our Red Cross activities, and just about anything that comes under the head of Howard Activities we have the Student Government with the Senate in control to thank. The Student Senate which makes up the governing body of Student government is composed of the presi- dent, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, elected by popular vote of students, and ten senators, four from the senior class, three from the junior class, two from the sophomore class and one from the freshman class, elected by votes of the respective classes. VVe feel we owe them many thanks for a year's work well managed. It not only functions on the campus, but with outside civic organizations. 748 ENTRE Nous POLLY COCHRAN, Bl'lSi11l'S5 Manager BETTYSU DOZEN! A N, Edilor Giving you your HBack To Schooln edition of Entre Nous has been a pleasure I shall long remember. Qf course, there has been work and plenty of it, but many of you have made that interesting. To the faculty-for cooperation, understanding' and even a fevv cuts from classes- I want to give special thanks. To those students who did and those who didnit do the things you were supposed to do, I give my part in the make-up of this annual hoping it will be a source of a great many good memories in the years to come. And, aside from the fact that all of the people on my staff have been dependable and capable, I want to give special mention to Martha Nell Stuart, Ronald Weathers, Evelyn Kinard, Eancher Adams, and Don Davis. And more than anyone else, I feel indebted to Polly Cochran, Editor of the 1945 Entre Nous, who has worked just as hard on this yearbook because she is so typically full of the spirit of Howard. 1946. Being tapped for Hypatia is the highest honor that can come to a woman student on Howard's campus. its members are chosen on the basis of their scholarship, leadership, character, and promise of future useful- ness. Hypatia consists of only those girls who exemplify the highest qualities of its requirements. Tapping takes place in front of Main after a brief history of the or- ganization by Dean Burns. Members of Hypatia, both students ano alumnae, participate in the services. As a signification of the honor, each student qualifying for membership has a corsage of yellow roses placed on her shoulder. A girl who has been elected a member of this organization is looked upon as an example of an ideal Howard College co-ed and is expected to do her life's work to the best of her ability, whether it be that of career woman or housewife. Dean Obenchain, is faculty advisor for the group. Betty Lee Wooclcock, president of the organization, was assisted in tapping this year by Gaye Daniel, Martha Purser Brown, Margaret Ward, Edna Jo Medlin, Louise Hardin, Anne Hatcher, and Betty Jane Houlditch. Students tapped were Margaret Ann Miller, Juanita Hayes, Frances Walker, Jerry Mitchell, Juanita Arnold, Bobby Stubbs, and Marguerite Johnston TRI-DENT Trident, the highest honor society for men on the campus, taps those men from the junior class who meet its standards in the three fields of scholarship, leadership, and esteem of students and faculty. Trident tapping takes place in the auditorium of Main. Students are unaware until the time of tapping of those who have reached the re- quirements of the group. Members of Trident include David Barksdale, Loyd Moon, Howard Clark, john Oakes, Sigurd Bryan, Marvin Haire, Bobby Burns, Jimmy Wootls. in mericom G egea 6LIfL6! TILE AND MQRTAR ,.,.' Although Tile and Mortar is purely a professional organization its members are perhaps the most versatile on the campus. Wihile Npill rolling , is their primary in- terest they find time to take part in almost every other activity offered and many social organizations are represented among' its members. The meetings designed to bring the students the last minute news of the profession of pharmacy are in the form of luncheons. Highlights of the year are initiation into the cluh and several informal gget-togetliers . The return of many of the veterans has swelled the membership and has added new interests to the forwarding' of the goals and ideals of 'llile and Mortar. Under the capable advisorship of Dr. Willarcl Hadley, Tile and Mortar has succeeded in bringing' the world of pharmacy to the individual student and in turn introducing the future pharmacists of America to their chosen field. SPATULA Pill-rolling' with :L feminine touch is the main interest of those girls in Spatula. C3111-Zl11lZCCl to promote professional interest in the young' women of Phzlrinzlcy it is perhaps one of the most promising new clubs on the czunpus. The Young Woiiieiils Christian Association is a non-denominational organization which strives to bring' about a closer understanding and fellowship among' the women students on the campus. Miss Florence Drake served as sponsor for the group this year. One thing we like about Y. VV. C. A. is that all of the women students are eligible for membership. Their calendar is full of activities for the year which serve to promote student fellowship. Y. M. C. A. Pzlrzlllel to the Y. XY. C. A., tlie Young' Blenls Christian Association is open to all men students who wish to work cooperatively for the good of fellowmen on the czunpus. lt has members from every orgztnizzition on the campus and its influence is strongly felt on the entire campus. lt is :tn active agent in uniting the men students in religious and sociztl activities. MISSICDN BAND The Mission 'Hand was organized on Howard campus by those students interested in the fields of mission work. lt consists of students directly interested in doing such work as well as those who wish to know more about it and support it. It is responsible for several missions in the city of Birmingham and each year mis- sionaries from different fields are invited as guest speakers to the group. Its members are not selected, but are volunteer workers. 'llhis year the VVomen Christian Volunteers has worked in the Mission Band group with the ideal of promo- tion of Christianity as their chief aim. They are active workers in the Juvenile Court of the city. MINISTERIAL ASSGCIATIQN As the name denotes the Ministerial Association has as its members male students who have chosen the ministry as their life work. They have regular meetings, sometimes including the wives and figmeees ot the members, to discuss their problems and possible solutions. Full ot' promise, these young' men contribute mueh to our campus life in their fine Christian ideals. BAPTIST S The Baptist Student Union is open to every llaptist on the campus. lt contributes more to the social and religious activities than any other organization on the campus. Its members belong to many other or- ganizations on the campus. The main aim of the B. S. U. is to uphold the ideal of brotherhood and Christian happiness on our campus. VVC have been given parties, chapel programs and numerous other things through the B. S. U. this year. Their annual banquet at Ruhama Church is one of the main events on the social calendar of the year. Vlfith Earl Potts as President the Baptist Student Union has had one of its most prosperous years. The two councils of B. S. U. have served to unite its efforts with those of the entire student body. NT UNION Morning lVatch and Vespers are two of the services open to all students through the Baptist Student Union. They are a symbol of Howard spirit that we shall always cherish. Registration day in September is always easy to take because of the feeling the Baptist Student Union gives you that you are a vital part of Howard. From the trembling' freshman to the triumphant Senior we thank the Baptist Student Union for what you have meant to all of us. DRAMA SERVICE DEPARTMENT T he Drama Service Department contributes to the cultural, artistic, and religious life of the state, and is designed to give technical, personal assistance to all schools, churches and special groups. Mrs. Lydia Kayes Wooclcock, a member of Zeta Phi Eta, professional drama fraternity, is the director of Howard's Drama Service Depart- ment. Having spent the greater part of her life in the study of drama, she knows it from the educational and producing ends. In her work she has friendly entre to the leading publishers, and our mails attest the service rendered the play producing public. Her slogan is, 'Bring us your problems-we do not know all the answers, but our advisory group is a 'who's who' of those who do. S. Nax'y's good ship Howard was decommissioned. Referred to by the local press as Howard's orphan lliillcloggsu, the team lzoasted two fair ends in I. VV. Danehower, of Gadsden, and .-Xttaboy Ililly Gamble, of Bessemer, plus an ag'g'ressix'e center in Don Davis, of hlolmstown, Pa., but those misters-in-between-the guards and tackles- boasted neither flesh or spirit to carry the fight against opponents. The backfield posts was little better manned than the line, except for the tailbaek spot, handled eapably by team captain Carroll Illackerby, who proved himself some shakes as a runner, passer and kicker. lllaekerby, who calls Bessemer home, did most of the ball-totin' and passing, what with there being' no capable understudy for him. john O'Nan, one of the teamls shorties, played the blocking'-back post as well as a little man l91l5 could, and drew support from Charlie Cargall, of Gadsden, at wing- back, and Bob Patton, Miami, Fla., at full. Vernon Bullock, of 'llylertown, Miss., and Wayne Shear, of Daytona Beach, Fla., played a lot of tackle for the Bulldogs and were given ready support by Lamar 'llherrell and Ned Carracker. Jack Crouch, of Co- lumbus, Miss., the team's most handsome, and Bentley Gwen, of Bir- mingham, usually were the starting guards, drawing support from Fred Ulbright, of Mobile, the shorty of the team, and Dick White, of Lex- ington, Va. lt was a tough situation from start to finish for Coach Bub Wzllker, who faced the season in September with only one letterman-End Billy Gamble, a civilian-and only a handful of players who had had much experience. Oldest man on the team was E. E. Sears, of Kings Mountain, Ky., who was 22. Nine members of the team were 18, 17 were 19, five were 20 and seven were 21. At least the Bulldogs were consistent in losing. Every game was decided by at least four touchdowns in favor of the opposition. The Navy was no howling success athletically at Howard as these fig- ures will show: Football-two wins, 12 lossesg softball-no wins, six lossesg tennis-three wins, two lossesg basketball-15 wins, six losses: track-seven points in Southeastern A. The football team's only returning letterman. Billy started most of the games at end and played some fullback. ln the lull between foot- ball and basketball season, he organized the intramural basketball league, playing' for the Preachers before leav- ing' that team to join the varsity. On the varsity which he coached he was a starting' forward and one of thc teamls most aggressive players. From the time of Bub NValker,s resignation in November until March, 1946. Billy was acting athletic director at Howard. Twenty-four players received letters. 'llhey were: Carroll Blackerby, J. XY. Danehower, Bob Patton, Dick White. lack Crouch, VX'ayne Shear, Lamar Therrell, Ed Barrett, Frank Harrison, Paul Godwin, Lex '.l'empleton, Charles Bidgood, Don Davis, Bentley Gwen, Fred Ulbricht, Vernon Bullock, Bedford Prescott, Billy Gamble, New Car- ricker, and Charles Cargal. The team had a budding fullback prospect in Ray Kennamer, but he was put out of action in the Bulldogs, first game, the chunky runner hurting his back against Auburn. an The Phi Mus, long famous for their strangle hold on things athletic in the girls' realm at lloward, were forced to take a back seat in 1945, as Renfroe Hall and Beta Sigma Omicron crashed through to win the basketball and volleyball cham- pionships, respectively. In each event, the Town Girls finished second. ll. S. O. tagged the Town GirlS. 39-34, in the finals of the volleyball tournament to its title, while Renfroe went through the season unbeaten, tied once. to annex the cage championship. Members of the winning volleyball team were: Annie E. Hermann, Nell Rae Sample, Sue Smith, Alberta VVilliams, lean Crook, jerry Arledge and Tinker Jones. Defending champion was Phi Mu. Members of the winning basketball team from Renfroe were Betty Reeves. june Stewart, Linda I.ee. Margie Godwin, Ruby Reeves. NClll2l Ruffin, Carol Pickens, Myra Barnett and Miriam Cockrell. Qnly team which successfully held Renfroe in tow was Phi Mu, which held on for a 22-T22 tie with the champions. Phi Mu had a chance to win it when one of its forwards was presented a gift shot just before the game ended. The for- ward put the shot through and seemingly Phi Mu had a victory, but, no, she stepped over the line in making her shot.
