-E The son of a wealthy family, John Howard was revolted by the social conditions of his time. Nvith a pas- sionate zeal for reform, he devoted his entire life and fortune to the allevia- tion of human misery. He traveled from one end of Europe to the other, studying conditions in prisons and hos- pitals, helping the sick and afflicted without regard for race or creed. Never once did he ask pay for his work, or credit for his accomplish- ments. He died near Kherson, in southern Rus- sia, in the winter of 1790. Thus we have the beginning and the end of the life of a great man. Who can supply the interim? Certainly we cannot in the space of a few short sentences tell of the sacrifices, the hardships, the pri- vations he experienced in fulfilling what he regarded as his Christian duty. morial to himself, he insisted that the money be used instead for charity. For almost a century this institution has reverently borne the name of this great Christian leader.
