R O UND BA LLERS CITY CHAMPS The Sam Rayburn Varsity Basketball team, coached by lim Barker and JB Carter, had an overall average season of 21-12. The Texan team was evenly bal- anced with five juniors and five seniors, The Seniors included Tommy Kerr, Danny Stephens, lim Fife, Steve Lyles, and Greg Meyer. The team was also beefed by juniors Shang McCoy, Kermit Richards, Mark Heneck, lohn Heintschel, and Pat lvlire. Preseason play ended with a record of 12-7. Although the Texans began strongly their lack of experience began to show. The Texans survived two tournaments: Pasadena and Dickinson, placing third and Consolation respectively, but the Corpus Christie tournament proved only to be a walk on the beach. Even with one of the leading scorers in Rayburn's history, Tommy Kerr, coach Barker's dreams of a championship once again crumbled at the feet of Deer Park and Clear Lake. Although the Rex- ans ended their season on a losing note against Pasadena, they did end up with City Championship and overall third in district. Senior, Danny Stevens stretches up for a rebound as teammate Tommy Kerr backs him up faithfully. 211

Starters for the IV are as pictured: Meriwether, Mc- Coy, Adams, Heintschel, Lane. Sophomore, Carl Lenz and lunior, Kirk Lane show their talents on the court at a IV basketball game. JU IOR VAR ITY TAKE FOURTH The junior Varsity Basketball Team ended their season with a record of 19-14. This record secured fourth place in the district. The team attended tour- naments at Pasadena and La Marque and placed consolation in both. In the Spring Tournament, the junior Varsity placed fourth. High scorers for the team were john Heintschel and Kirk Lane. The junior Varsity was coached by jB Carter. Members of the team were: Heintschel, Lane, Adams, Scroggins, Lenz, Clark, Guild, Coyle, McKinney, Hill, Skyles, Collins, Scott. luniors Iames Adams and Bruce Helntschel jumps high into the air in an attempt for two points. 212
