Pennybacker, an honor student of the first graduation class of Sam Houston Normal Institute, passed away in February ot 1938. She was deeply grateful for her Alma Mater and as a last token of her appreciation she bequeathed in her will to Sam Houston State Teachers College $5,000 as a permanent fund to cultivate in the itudent body a love for the true and beautiful life. Each year the facuhy and students select a prominent member of the senior or junior class, v ii() is given $250 of the Pennybacker iimd for the use of travel or study. Billie Jean Hoke, a very deserving student of exceptional ability, won the Scholarship last year and spent the summer in travel through the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Arizona, and Utah. THE GIBBS HUJHRD In 1948 the Gibbs Award was presented to Rebecca O ' Bannon of Huntsville, Texas. The award was used for a trip to New York and Canada. The fund, created to be used by the literary societies to further cultural development, was made possible by Mr. Wilburn S. Darwin is well known for his singing ability and was a member of the A Capella Choir till it was necessary to give it up for his editorial work. Possessed of an unfailing energy and a well rounded personality he is sure to go far. ROSE ENOCH Rose, a senior from Baytown, is an unusual person in that she possesses both charm and intelligence. She is noted for her ability to get along with people, which is evidenced by her being a Student Council Representative, President of Belvin Hall, Vice-President of both the Loulie Sexton Estill Literary Society and Kappa Delta Pi, and Secretary of the Baytown Club.
