On the way back to town the team stopped in Beaumont for a return game. The Black and Gold were again slow in getting started and the Purple led at the half by a 9 to 8 score. At the start of the second half, however, the Tigers began looping the basket with regularity and as a result won the game by the tune of I9 to 16.-Revenge is sweet. The next game was the annual contest with Heights. This was not a game but a veritable slaughter. The Tigers played well, but were no match for the wonderful combination of the Maroon and White. This is about all there is to be said, for if any- thing else is ventured it will be about the Bulldogs, and this is no Heights Annual. It may be added, however, that the score at the half was I7 to 3, favoring Heights, and at the end of the game, it was 33 to I I, not favoring Sam Houston. Then came the last game of High School Competition, a game with the Port Arthur High. The Tigers seemed to want to show before it was too late that they could play basketball, proceeded to take the lead at the first whistle and the Yellow Jackets were soon buzzing helplessly in the background. The intermission found Sherrnan's second string playing and the score I7 to 5 for Sam Houston. The Jackets could have beaten the second string and the first five had to be sent back into the game near the end of the last quarter. They stopped the threat and came out winners by the score 28 to 22. Having completed the schedule of games, but still not satisfied, Coach Sherman decided to play a few games with the amateurs of the city. The first game came on February 17th, with the South End All Stars. This was thought to be out of the Tigers' class but the Black and Gold refused to let any of the Purple live up to their name. It was a merry scrap and at the half the score was o to 7 in favor of Sam Houston. The score remained practically deadlocked until near the end of the game, but then the school boys decided it was about time to go home and sank enough goals to win 21 to 17. The season was brought to close on February 22nd, when the I. K. X. Fraternity team, impending champions of this city was played. A difficult task, to say the least, but the 'tiger is afraid of no animal, even those of Hebrew style. The Tigers, knowing the defense of the foe, tried the well known act of freezing, It worked to good ad- vantage the first half, and held the older team to a IO to II score. In the later stages of the game the I. K. X. team refused to be frozen and they appeared to be Eskimos for a while, the way they played in the 'fchili atmosphere. The final and last score of the season was 30 to 16. Nothing has been said about the teamwork of the team or of the individual playing. Their record, made against great odds, speaks for the playing of the team. Red and Jakie were the stars of the year, the former being acknowledged one of the best basketball men in the city and the latter not far behind. Both these men, with Grant, Fuller, and Murphy will be back another year to carry on. as SED BSE
