Time Is Eternity A l ADMINISTRATION New Year, ' A Better Year The fall of '72 saw Bar1ow's administration faced with new and difficult challenges as it worked with students, parents, and school activities. The 72- 73 school board, with united efforts and many extra hours of hard work, put together the student con- duct code book. They formalized old policies and de- veloped new systems for better student conduct throughout the school. Arena Scheduling started the year with a new and different approach to registration. It enabled the stu- dents to choose the teachers and classes they wanted, in the hopes that schedules would not be rearranged dur- T , ing the first two weeks of school. The planning con- sumed many hours, and it proved to be a great success. This year's school board employed adequate teaching personnel, and provided sufficient funds to function. s ROBERT TAYLOR IVAN GILLAM y PRINCIPAL VICE -PRINCIPAL DR. This added approximately two thousand dol- lars to the student body treasury, and put two beautiful 10-speed bikes into the hands of two very happy students. The Student Council lounge was a new plus for student government this year. During all periods of the day, information could be obtained about student activities and assist those with questions about Council affairs. Two of Sam Barlows executive council mem- bers, joe Opray and Vicki Rohrberg, were presented Student Leadership Awards from the Elks Club. This qualified them for the nation- al competition in the hopes of scholarships. This year, the Student Council was privi- ledged in having the services of a fine advisor, Mr. Lynn Winchester. Mr. Winchester, Executive Council, Student Council, and I. O. C. Worked hard towards making Barlows students aware that student government is extremely important. Some of the events they sponsored included: A pie eating con- test for Bear Down Week, and they also got together a donkey basketball game. They have participated in many school activities and have shown lots of spirit. Strange enough, all the Frosh council came from Orient Grade School. They held meetings throughout the year and made good progress. They were very energetic and enthusiastic. During the year, they put together a great freshmen class. Four hard-working freshmen find that outdoors is the most enticing way to work. The Freshmen Class Officers are from Left To Right: Kevin Clark, Vice Presidentg Lori Lofstedt, Secretaryg Carol Stone, Treasurerg Dan Treanor, Sergeant at Armsg Lori Toland, Gir1s'League Repg Center: Kendall Newbrey, President. f 2 E f74f'7iQ'fWZ'fQ-,225 if? as ,, .,,:g,i: t rg ' . VARSITY WRESTLING Varsity Season S ujers Two Wrestlers Make S tate The wrestling program took a turn for the best this year as Barlow finally brought wrestlers to the state meet. Harvey Meyer and Rick Thompson both earned the right to go to the event in Corvallis, with Harvey bringing home a second place medal at the 156 weight class and Thompson gaining sixth at 115 lbs. It was a good season as far as individuals excelling, said coach Tony Cutsforth as he reflected back on the season. This season got us up over the hill and established that we have people good enough to go to the all-state level. lt seems to be important in a program such as this one to establish itself through individuals first and then the team will not be lightly regarded. Duel-meet wise, we were not the best, but lack of numbers hurt us and lessened our chances of having a winning sea- son. The turnout this year was fair but compared to the standards of other schools, fair was just not good enough. And a sophomore, Tim Chain, was a surprise winner in the 880, upsetting the field with a school record time of 1:58. 1. Senior john Yotmg snapped school records in the 440 numerous times during the season including a 50. 9. With a dislocated ankle he settled for third at district. Incredibly enough, a freshman took ownership of the shot-put record. jim Pitts heaved the ball over 48 feet and made district finals. They ended their season with an even number of wins to losses. The highlight of the girls season was the 10-0 win against Centennial. '- BOY'S TENNIS Tennis Season One of Learning We missed a winning season by only one game, recalled tennis coach Frank Surmeyer, about the 1973 season. And that 5 win 6 loss record would have been easily bolstered if not for the fact that we lost in mid-season the first doubles team of Tim Sommerville and Dan Strebin. At that time the team was 5-1 in league play. John Laxman was probably our best player, Surmeyer commented. As a result, John played first singles. Second singles was manned by Kevin Cassady. Bob Anderson and Dan Ledbury took over the first doubles position. Doug Klieber and Roger Yamashita were sec- ond. The halls were filled with anticipation as classes and many clubs sponsored activities that promoted unity throughout the school. There was a tricycle race where a student, Norm Shively, peddlecl slowly to the finish line and victory. The journalism department sponsored an old time film festival on Thursday featuring the best of Frankenstein and Dracula, while the junior class floated happily away with the sales from the helium balloons. Bands Show Spirit Throughout Year This year was a working and learning one for the bands-and it was well worth the effort because each excelled to their fullest. The Symphonic Band traveled down the Oregon coast during their three day band tour hitting many schools along the way. In the Wilco League Band Contest they finished in 4th place-an outstanding showing. The Stage Band did an excellent job by placing 4th at the Wilco League Competition also, and taking a 2nd at Claskamas Community College at the State of Oregon State Band Contest. One of the exceptional band members, Sara Pearson, took first place on clarinet at District, and ranked a high third at the state level. Her outstanding playing earned her the honors of best woodwind instrumentalist during the awards assembly held at the end of the year. Others capturing awards were Doug Kleiber, for Percussion, who also competed for Barlow at the state solo contest, and Rich Monnie captured the coveted award of jazz Man of the Year . CONCERT CHOIR Concert Choir Excels at Wilco Our l972-73 Concert Choir added spirit and enthusiasm in thier own way by singing to perfection at this year's Wilco League Choir Festival. Competing against 14 other choirs. they managed to score in the top five and continued their reputa- tion ot' being a fine choir. This year proved to be an exceptional one because everyone worked alittle harder striving for one goal. . .that is to sing to the choir's potential, lt is ohvious that they didjust that. With the theme Up, Up and Away forthe annual Spa-Getogether, the choir headed north for their three day choir tour. The destination was Seattle although they sang at many high schools along the way. lt proved to be a rewarding trip for everyone. This year consisted ol' extreme hard work, with a feeling ofunity formed. but it also proved to be a learning experience with many new friendships made. Mr. Barber is in deep concentration in the hopes of playing it just right. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your own career, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing ik fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs 5 for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there isg many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about loveg for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the starsg you have a right to be here, and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. .'.g.-4.3.3 ff ' ' .f. , Q .- . ra:-1-:':gg:g:g:4:3q:-:-t-:-:-:gg:f:-'-:-'- f r:2f::3:1fr:z1: , 5 -.'.',f:1:f:C:1:f5T:tf.1 112:I:Y:2:25:1:3fi1:2:1:f:f:3:f?Y:i:12:C?3:2ZI:F f115:S1E5Ei?5ErErE 1131525251224213522Siifriiaiiriliirff 151,135-:f:E:E:: ',: 32:f:-:far 2:11113-:i:E:2-Q5:i:2:2z3 E252E1Ei52ECEf:'ff ' -3232515 :E5E2??fi22?252E1P2E2Z2551 ' ' ' ' ' ':1:'. t- -:!:5:5:f:2: ' ' '32-tlzifizfrizfcixfzi .Z.1,:.3.3Q.4.3,:.5.Q.:.1.a. , -:-:-:':2:f:-:1:-as-:iz-:-:-: .-:-:-:Z2:i:f:::izkiiizizfzi :-:-:-:-:-:-:.:-:-:-:-:-:-:r:- :A:-1-:':-'-1-.-wir:-1-:-' .2-.'.-.x.s.-J.'.','.n'.'.'eu.'.'. i'.'v.'.
