Golfers Glean Experience When spring sports began, boys' golf coach, Glenn Crisp was convinced that the fact that the opponents were tough shouldn't stop the Bruins from improving their record, and possibly win- ning a good percentage of games played. Un- fortunately, other schools did not agree, and as a result, Barlow settled slowly but surely to the bottom of the pile in Wilco League play. A cheery consolation came when the team beat Hood River by more than ten points in District action. Bruins were often bested because they had to play on the other team's home course, or, in the case of The Dalles, high winds wrought havoc on a carefully hit drive. Although there were many newcomers, sev- eral lettermen returned to lend a hand. Steve Bell, Phil Clemmer, Bob Kjenslee and Gary Swan often made up groups for match play. On the girls' team, the only veteran golfer was Susan Rutz. The rest of the team consisted of first year girls. S ITl Tennis Tea and 3 cn .r Racketeers, Ski Fiends Emerge The l970-7l year saw the addition of two new sports ac- tivities that included boys and girls: Tennis, coached by Mr, Frank Surmeyer, and Ski Team, coached by Mr. Curt Knight. Barlow's first year of league ski competition proved to be a challenge that was readily accepted, especially by the girls' team, which continually gave first place Hood River Valley a run for its money. Barlow's boys, competing against tougher opponents, often had to accept 8th or 9th place in the league while the girls, headed by Sandy DeCarne and Valerie Baudoin maintained a third, place position which e- ventually took them to Ashland and state competition. In tennis, the Bruins entered Wilco league play on a full varsity schedule against all of the established teams of the league. Racketeers were hampered a bit by having to borrow Mount Hood's tennis courts, but as a general thing, it didn't matter that much. The team was headed by Don Ashmore, best singles player, and with all but two of the top varsity members returning next year, Coach Frank Surmeyer has high hopes. , ri '-N149-gg ,..e X M. U 5 it K.
