'Mental Blocks Overcome 1 Although the freshman team had little to brag about in lthe way of visable victories, team members and Coach Mari- 'us Brockway have spent the year achieving what they call mental victories by overcoming blocks in concentration that threatened teamwork. Frosh basketball tryouts yielded 23 prospective horsehiders, but the number eventually shrunk to 15, where it remained for the season. Coach Brock- way was impressed with the hustle of the team, which, he said, was not easily discouraged despite its disappointing rec- ord. In the freshman line-up, Jeff Galvin and Daryle Broads- word led the team in hitting, while Jim Hunt and Steve Keels played the field with consistantly good results. Mft' 'WOR uit R41 114 J.V. .I .V. Baseball Frustrating Year Existing under the shadow of the varsity baseball team proved to be a disappointing experience for the J.V. hardballers even though they gave, as Coach Robert Moeller put it, ZOO per cent. The team im- proved tremendously from the beginning for the year, and the Coach cited several for their outstand- ing performances: Steve Arden, pitcher, and Dave Taylor, catcher, plus Bill Johnson and Bill Stevens who played well in the outfield and infield. Roy Bridgeman led the team in hitting with a .362 batting average. It was frustrating when you look at it from a win-loss standpoint, someone wrote on the records, but we had ... fun ...! riffs 3 J.V. team, below, includes: ROW l: D.Taylor, S.Groskopf, B.Stevens, P.Henneman, D.Lein, R.Drapeau. Golfers Glean Experience When spring sports began, boys' golf coach, Glenn Crisp was convinced that the fact that the opponents were tough shouldn't stop the Bruins from improving their record, and possibly win- ning a good percentage of games played. Un- fortunately, other schools did not agree, and as a result, Barlow settled slowly but surely to the bottom of the pile in Wilco League play. A cheery consolation came when the team beat Hood River by more than ten points in District action. Bruins were often bested because they had to play on the other team's home course, or, in the case of The Dalles, high winds wrought havoc on a carefully hit drive. Although there were many newcomers, sev- eral lettermen returned to lend a hand. Steve Bell, Phil Clemmer, Bob Kjenslee and Gary Swan often made up groups for match play. On the girls' team, the only veteran golfer was Susan Rutz. The rest of the team consisted of first year girls.
