Math-Science Programs Evolve Both the Math and Science de- partments added to their curriculums this year. The most obvious development in the Math department was the addi- tion of a computer terminal in the Math resource center. Mrs. Shirley Schmidt came to Barlow to teach the computer class. She was Barlow's first woman math teacher. Barlow's science program advanced another step as the Physics class got under way with full equipment. The class was taught by Mr, Rod Gradin, who demonstrated his skill with the laser beam, ripple tanks, and air table. A new course was planned for the science program. Man Made World was to deal scientifically with the problems of everyday life. According to Mr. Bob Minnis, Science Head, Barlow's Science pro- gram compares favorably with those of other schools, partly because of the students themselves. The kids are much friendlier here, and we can have much more close contact. Apparently the faculty agreed, as they named him outstanding faculty member. is tiiltgffia-'f ROBERT MINNIS Science-DEPARTMENT CHAIRMAN TONY CUTSFORTH UNN WINCHESTER l 10 RODNEY GRADIN

Basically, both the boys and girls had the same goals. Emphasis during the freshman year concentrated on team and large group activities. The girls played soccer, soft-ball, speedball, indoor hockey, and basketball while the boys partici- pated in soccer, flash-football, base- ball, kill'em, and prison ball. The sophomore class continued these activ- ities but shifted to such dual and in- dividual sports as tennis, bowling, handball, track, and swimming. Miss Laura Pliska taught all the girls, Mr. Michael Debois, new this year, led the freshmen and sophomore year, Mr. -Dale Stebbins, health and junior and senior classes, and Mr. Jeff Tinius, swimming.
