JOHN TURNER CAROL COLCORD Library-- DEPARTMENT CHAIRMAN 109 f ff' New Additions Made If Barlow's resources were highly organized this year, most of the credit should go to the new librarians: Mrs. Carol Colcord and Mrs. Winifred Puckettg and the A.V. department, including Mrs. Peggy Donaldson, Miss Carol Zumwalt, and aide, John Turner. Plagued by unidentified flying objects, dis- appearing books, fire bombs and enemy guer- rillas, the librarians were steadfast in the face ofdanger. The A.V. department had its share of prob- lems: broken films, non-functioning video tape equipment, and unscheduled checkouts. Des- pite this the A.V.ers minimized mix-ups and progressed through the year undaunted, even ET D' -1 D9 -1 '-4 av :s cn- P 4 sponsoring a soc-hop for the school and a pic- nic forthe A.V. club members. 4

Computers Teach This year's Social Studies depart- ment, headed by Curtis Knight, began a new approach to learning. A do your own thing type of schedule was tried by both the U.S. History and Modern Problems classes. This en- abled a student to pursue a subject that interested him over the nine weeks period. Computer games were an addition this year. As an economic experience, the Modern Problems classes formed corporations and bid, bought, sold, and turned bankrupt-all by com- puter. A new computer game for foreign affairs will, hopefully, be used next year along with the present game. Other new horizons that were spanned included the history classes' bouts with the stock market, psycho- logical discussions in Modern Prob- lems, Vietnam readings and cam- paigns. Math-Science Programs Evolve Both the Math and Science de- partments added to their curriculums this year. The most obvious development in the Math department was the addi- tion of a computer terminal in the Math resource center. Mrs. Shirley Schmidt came to Barlow to teach the computer class. She was Barlow's first woman math teacher. Barlow's science program advanced another step as the Physics class got under way with full equipment. The class was taught by Mr, Rod Gradin, who demonstrated his skill with the laser beam, ripple tanks, and air table. A new course was planned for the science program. Man Made World was to deal scientifically with the problems of everyday life. According to Mr. Bob Minnis, Science Head, Barlow's Science pro- gram compares favorably with those of other schools, partly because of the students themselves. The kids are much friendlier here, and we can have much more close contact. Apparently the faculty agreed, as they named him outstanding faculty member. is tiiltgffia-'f ROBERT MINNIS Science-DEPARTMENT CHAIRMAN TONY CUTSFORTH UNN WINCHESTER l 10 RODNEY GRADIN
