E E Q -I Individuals Kindle Minds And there were. . .teachers with perceptive, open minds- teachers like Mr. Robert Barber, Mr. Charles Bolton, and Mr. David Phares, who colored the lives of many singing voices and students of musical instruments as well by achiev- ing a perfected quality. . .and a teacher like Mr. Tom Robin- son, who introduced a new theatrical tradition to Barlow- annual performances of Charles Dickens's Christmas play, A Christmas Carol ...and Mr. Wayne Gessford, who guided his students down the long and winding road to- wards success aided by newcomer Mrs. Susan Miller- a memorable and lasting success-that now acknowledges Barlow's speech department as the third best in state. . .and then a teacher all her own, Miss Carolyn Menegas, who, tried in a do-or-die attempt, to pull off another winning year for 'The Bruin Banner'. . .These six teachers kept the flame burning. Miss Peggy Covey, head of the English department, described the 1970-71 aca- l demica year as a time for consolidation of ideas. fIsn't that just like her?j In other words, the faculty strove to allow freedom, while still aiming at high goals. Most students agree that this year proved to be the second successful year of the elective English program. Such new classes as Utopian Literature, Adventure Literature, Minority Voices, and Industrial Report allowed students to specialize in areas of their own interests.
