Student Qovernment Clubs Senior c ttoments Qraduates Prologue Encounter, challenge, enrichment, commitment — these are the core Words from which evolves the truly educated person. When these are placed within the framework of a sound theological and philosophical discipline the result is the flowering of a Christian perspective, the matur- ing of a well-rounded personality. Encounter marks the freshmen world of discov- ery and experimentation not only in the aca- demic sphere but even more so in the adjustment to campus life and upperclassmen. The sopho- more measures the highway ahead and chooses sometimes the road less traveled by. In any case there is deliberation, a certain wariness and, of course, wisdom. Enrichment is the key to the position of the college junior, absorption in the field of concentration, analysis, comparison, depth — these are the hallmarks of the third year student. Social activity, relationships with faculty and with each other share in the pro- gression toward excellence. The senior stands at the beginning of a commitment to life. Time past, time present, time future blend in the quintessence of achievement which is paradox- ically to be tested beyond these gates. The en- counter, the challenge, the enrichment, the com- mitment are ever present in ever varying degrees. This book celebrates one facet of these attributes, a segment of life set within the boundaries of college years — college years in our Modern era. College years, yes, but years spent at Salve Regina. The Regina Maris of 1965 endeavors to present to all its readers student life at this college by the sea. With pride we show you our campus, our administration and faculty and ourselves. It is a picture book but also a book which depicts more than what meets the eye-sight and insight, the one encompasses the other. You will find here dedication, loyalty, friendliness, and diligence. You will share in the encounter, the challenge, the enrichment, the commitment. So come, come within our gates. ' Dedication WK In our college years we are encouraged to develop a personal and practical responsibility in the accomplishment of our studies, in our social engagements and in the management of campus affairs. This involves guidance, interest, understanding, firmness and patience on the part of the one whose task it is to integrate us as a class and to promote among us a respect for authority, for scholarship and for each other. Within the sphere of such an influence there develops a maturity of vision, a deepening ap- preciation of our debt to those who have made these college years possible and a gradual cog- nizance of the unified pattern that each day ' s events reveal in the light of our common human condition as college students. From the unforgettable days of our first en- counter as Freshmen through the challenge of Sophomore year to the enriching achievement we experienced as Juniors now as we look out- ward to our commitment as Seniors we find one who has followed through for four years in her devotedness and in her loyalty to us as class moderator. It is in recognition of such service to us in all our needs and in all our vicissitudes that we aedicate the Regina Maris of 1965 to Sister Mary Wilhelmina. THE MOST REVEREND RUSSELL J. McVINNEY, D.D. Grant to him, O Lord, the ministry of reconciliation in word and deed. Let his speech and his preaching be not in the persuasive words of human wisdom but in the showing of the spirit and of power. (Roman Pontifi- cal) Our Spiritual Leaders THE MOST REVEREND BERNARD M. KELLY, D.D. Fill up in Thy priest the perfection of the ministry. Be his authority, his pow er, and his strength. Multiply on him Thy blessing and Thy grace so that by Thy gift he may be fitted ever to obtain Thy Mercy. (Roman Pontifical) We wondec if our words will fittingly pay tribute to you. We who encounter you day by day; we students sitting before you row by row from nine to five. Your lives are given in the daily round of lectures, notes, books, exam- inations, problems, labs and meetings with each other for our sake. Angelus, McAuley, Ochre, Mercy echo with your words. We traverse the highways and byways of campus with you mindful of your bag of books and your friendly greeting. We are conscious of your en- deavor to put into fifty minutes an organized segment of knowledge. We recognize the effort you make to help us, to unify, to integrate and to realize the continuity of the subject matter. We find on the other side of the desk or in the council room of the adminis- tration interest, solicitude and dedica- tion. We share with you a justifiable pride in the beauty and culture of our college locale. We rejoice with you in the ex- pansion of Salve Regina. We are happy to be with you in this era of its history. Most of all we look upon you as being for us more than beauty of cornice or staircase. We find in you cordiality, understanding and patience. You are the living cornerstones of our college fam- ily. It is from you we experience the encounter with learning, the challenge, the enrichment and the commitment to our ideals. faculty Mother M. It is an integral element in the formation of the 20th century woman. To share the respo n- sibility of governing Salve Regina is the duty of the Student Government. This council is composed of students elected by the student body. It is the voice of the students, the means whereby student problems may be debated, and resolved. Each of the Student Council officers has accepted a serious responsibility. Each is concerned with the common good. This demands courage, delibera- tion, discipline and sacrifice. This little world of government, this miniature parliament measures and weighs the policies and the injunctions of school law. This council sets the pace, creates the atmosphere, infiltrates its own spirit within the ranks of under- classmen. It is judicial without being offensive, it is friendly without loss of dignity, it respects each student and is in turn respected. The Council has done much to foster good will. Some of its members helped in the revision of the handbook last year. All of its members this year are concerned with the actual day by day functioning of these revisions. Here, Mary Ellen Bessette takes the big step through the giant replica of the college ring: now she is an official upperclassman. 95 Here are the odd moments that some- how in their very diversity are special — the moments in between that suggest almost anything — comradeship, fun, social engagement, a game of cards, a class meeting, or casting a vote for the president of the United States or what you will. Yet are these moments as odd as they appear! 1 Are they the moments that do not fit into any classification. ? Are they interludes of no significance. ' ' They are the moments that catch the human touch, the feminine concern for each succeeding event and each fleeting encounter. They are the moments which give color, warmth, and enthusiasm — a kind of counterpoint to the rhythm of study and the more serious concerns of college life. Along the way a chance meeting, a friendly chat, a jam session or a fall weekend do much to mold attitudes, encourage leadership and de- velop womanliness. The Haven, Sham- rock Cliff, Newport Creamery, Ten Mile Drive, downtown Newport — these tell the story of four years. These ate the memories which remain and recall Salve Regina and the class of 1965. These odd moments strange as it may appear have a share in the edu- cating process and in the formation of the Christian woman. Perhaps it is in these seemingly trivial moments the feminine character is more severely tested and more deeply enriched. When we take these same attributes and apply them to the fem- inine character we are somehow chang- ing the perspective, deepening the in- sights and demanding an emphasis which only a woman can give. Salve Regina places confidence in you. her 1965 graduates. Within this grow- ing campus there is concrete evidence of much in the realm of material expan- sion. All the while quietly and almost in secret you have matured in the ways of knowledge, in the experience of the intellectual, in the encounter with your- self as a woman. You are not only a Catholic College graduate but you have the distinctive mark of this college upon you. It is here during the course of four years that you have become a part of all that you have met. It is here along these cliffs and within the sound of the sea that you have lived and studied. It is here within this atmosphere of the spiritual and the cultural, within this college family that your hours and days have been spent. A thousand days of encounter, of challenge, of enrichment and of commitment. Your commitment lies beyond these gates to a world who needs in all spheres of life the dedication, the power, and the influence of the Chris- tian woman. Qraduates Salve c Regina Class of 1965 A.B. It marks the last meeting of the Seniors with the College students. Historic Saint Mary ' s is the sc ene for the Baccalaureate Mass. The Seniors are justly proud of the privilege of using this beautiful setting. Within Saint Mary ' s the Mass progresses. The solemnity of the High Mass has its own message for the Seniors. 151 Epilogue In these moments of farewell time present and time past are both present in time future. All our days meet in this one point — commencement. Here be- side the restless waters within the circling gannets ' cry; here where the salt brine is on the wild rose bordering the cliff and the sundial high on the grey chimney measures the fleeting hours; here is the pattern of timeless moments. Here is the instant of illumination in this mo- ment of valediction, in itself a beacon light into time future. Here is a lifetime poised within an hour. This is the life which merges into a life of action, of action comprehended and sustained by the years of study. Fare well and fare forward to that moment be- yond the shadow of the sundial, beyond the voice of many waters where thought and action find ful- fillment, where hope and desire are transcended — where all things and all manner of things arc eternal. 152 153 College Directory CLASS OF 1965 CAROLE A.
