Sister, your quiet, unpretentious ways have not gone un- noticed. The many headaches and worries you have spared others in the preparation of yearbooks throughout the years — though sometimes unappreciated by us - — deserves much more gratitude than we can offer in these few words to you. Yours has been a thankless task since your efforts are shadowed by the wonderful end product — The Regina Maris. The unwavering energy and enthusiasm you display in your every effort never seems to reach the point of exhaustion, and no task is too overwhelming for you. The old adage Good things come in small packages finds its true worth here — for although small in appearance, what lies underneath is a magnanimous heart and an unrelenting spirit of dedication in each of your responsibilities as a Sister, teacher, and moderator of our yearbook. Though this dedication comes as a surprise to you, we felt it was the only way to express our appreciation for all you have done. The Most Reverend RUSSEL J. McVINNEY, D.D. Just to hear again the laughter of our classmates, The hopes and joys we shared throughout the years, We will think of our dear Alma Mater Salve, The beauty that surrounds our College fair. And since the tides of life will come between us, We need a link to bind us to these shores, We will ask our God to keep us close in spirit, And thus in memory bring us back once more. Each is busy with her own assignment, lost in thought, or busy reading. The autumn sun and a gentle breeze aids com- prehension and sharpens wits. Four happy Freshmen head for the four o ' clock bus. Carol, Joyce, and the two Kathies bookladen and homeward bound leave the library at the close of another day. Ochre Court Dorm, room nine, is busy about many things, reading, record hopping, ironing and attempting to study. Words, words, words keep a college student busy, so these freshmen, Betty and Sandra are discovering. 24 Ellie Hawkins and Arlene Sullivan introduce Doris McElroy and Teresa Hannan to the delights of Mercy Hall. The Freshman Investiture Tea was a gala affair. Junior sisters played host- esses adding their own charm to the cordial atmosphere. Maureen, Lois, Mary and Joanne pause for a moment to socialize after a hard night ' s work. 25 ; - ,. 3EB3i .V 1 irr- onr nnnnnnnnngl GGnrhrifiOi am IsisSSBSSS! • : ©LASS OF ' 64 Claire Morin and Susan Goulet are out for a brisk walk as they head for the cliff walk from Moore Hall. Here is a maid from far Japan enjoying her saki. Hisae Ogura fascinates the Sophs at Saint Joseph ' s Hall with her recipes and her Japanese fare. 27 This is good exercise after class. Joyce, Sue, and Toni like the pungent smell of burning leaves and the feel of the rake in their unaccustomed fingers. Soon they will be out of the smoke screen and back to the books. Lollypop lime in the dorm! Joanne Green ponders over her delicacy while Sandy Nicosia ventures a taste. Ann Boucher and Kathy O ' Brien aren ' t quite ready to share the sweets. Terry ' s the driver, but first she consults her erstwhile pas- sengers Anne Bruton, Ginny Butler and Mary McCarthy. 28 There ' s always room for one more! At least, that ' s what we may gather from these inviting sardine mimics! Miss Murphy, house supervisor, shares some happy moments with her girls at St. Joseph ' s Hall. Connie, Mary, Anne, Joan, Noreen, Nina, Janice, Sandy and Hisae listen with interest and enjoyment. Pat, Nancy and Linda — guess where they are? A place made famous by you know who, that is if you lived at Salve first semester. 29 Juniors Maureen Kelly, Shyla Sullivan, Cathy Sullivan and Marilyn Kennedy leave for student observation. Junior Student Nurses arrive on campus on Mondays and Fridays. Here they grouped in room eight busy about some scientific problems. 31 Our Jolly Juniors have taken over Salve ' s newest home. You can tell the mood is gay as they chat casually on the stairs of St. Joseph Hall. Juniors hash it over on the steps of Marion Hall. What ' s the matter, Bev? Looks like an overdose of Racine! Just my luck on a sunny afternoon at 4:00! It ' s even worse than chcm lab. ■-• Here or up higher? Carol scans Katie ' s decorating with an artist ' s eye, while Joan plans her own scheme! La Rosa, anyone? Barbara and Sue relish their chef ' s role at St. Joseph ' s Hall. Sheila finds a perfect fit, while other juniors order those 63 bands of blue and gold. 33 m • KT - ' • SJ ■. .■.. ■.. Providing a welcome, an inspiration, and a recognition of deserving members, Convocation Day is one of the more important insertions in the SRC memory book. CONVOCATION These Juniors reap the benefits of a scholarly Sophomore year. They receive their Dean ' s List cards. Ginny Butler reaches a plateau in her nursing career. She re- ceives her cap from Bishop Maloney. 35 M y ' 5 I v ■i r «s y Waf - l RBh l f It ' Vr? ? Or is it the gay wrappings, curled ribbon, and hopes that my turn will come that have produced these smiles? Christmas time finds Cathy Foye ' s little charge starry-eyed. Is all this really mine, she wonders incredulously, as the man-in-red hides his feelings behind a mass of white. CHRISTMAS HIGHLIGHTS 37 fValU me around again, Daddy, the girls seem to be saying. Tonight of all nights, at the Father-Daughter dance, the dads are the favorite Saturday night dates. FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE Helen Shea, Mary Rafferty and Wanda Tereska encourage their dads to take a coffee break at the Father-Daughter dance, sponsored by the Student Nurses ' Organization of which the girls are members. ■. . ■■■38 NEBBISH DANCE Amid long, short, upside-down, inside out, over-stuffed, be-spectacled, etc., etc., etc., Nebbishes, a lively group of people had a swinging time at the never-to-be forgotten Nebbish Nonchalance. Miss Collins practice teaches at Sullivan School in the first grade. The expression of her little pupil ' s face seems to display satisfaction. Colors are so much fun to learn especially when you have a lively bulletin board and a teacher like Miss Horrigan, these little first graders must be thinking. STUDENT TEACHERS Puff is the name of the cat in the family, Miss Burke. So Kate Burke ' s little first grader tells her. But reading is only one of the skills these pupils master with help from the student teachers. 40 Helen Shea prepares to don her surgical gloves to assist in a major operation as Wanda Tereska, circu- lating nurse, aids in tying her gown. Paulette La Cava is busy drying her hands after a six minute surgical scrub. The nurses sum up their day ' s activity at the nurses ' station. Jaye Claffey has an important question about hers. Ellie Dampf and Cecile Belisle prepare their re- ports to give to the head nurse, while Marie Manning charts the progress her patients have made during the day. What time to receive that special phone call! Janice Carroll tells Mary Folks she ' ll have to wait, while Susan McGowan administers an injection and Beverly Pozzi stands by to assist her. It must be nice to have your own classmates nurse you back to health. Right Mary? STUDENT NURSES 41 Miss Margaret Culkin charmed us all during her week here in the Fall. The Seniors did not have the oppor- tunity of attending the lectures, so they were favored with a private audience. LECTURERS Senator John O. Pastore, a member of the Atomic Energy Commission, favored us with an interesting and instructive exposition of the nature of atomic energy and of the progress of the Commission. 42 _ Here and There Roseanne Neumann and Barbara Kiejna are. off to classes on a beautiful Fall day. It ' s a nice walk from Queen. Salve Regina gets a new flag and celebrates the occasion with a Flag Raising Ceremony. The Coggeshall Continentals play and the entire student body in caps and gowns are in attendance. It is a proud day. 2 ,Wi 2 While Linda Wallace and Sheila Carroll look on, Lynne Collins, Liz McLoughlin, Dot Dutra, Jan Brown and Barbara Gorman go over some very official business at the Social Committee meeting. Dotty presides over this active group. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Patricia Silva, President of the Student Body, and Helen Shea, Vice-President, guide our little Ship of State. Meet Salve Regina ' s collective student voice — the Student Council. With Sister Mary Constance, R.S.M., as its moderator and Patricia Silva (center) as its head, its elected members make decisions and voice opinions in the name of the student body. Each class has its representatives on this Council and both Day- Hops and Residents take part in this much-respected activity. 44 Senior sodalists started their final sociality year at Salve with a closed retreat conducted by Reverend Robert Ferrick, S.J., from Boston College. Their combined cheer attests to the success of this venture. MARIA REGINA SODALITY Moderator of the Maria Regina Sodality, Sister Mary Eloise, R.S.M., plans the 1961-1962 sodality year with Prefect, Mary Coughlin, Mary Silva, Vice-Prefect, and Rosemarie Sbona, Director of Probationers. Sodality Reception Day was the solemn culmination, for persevering candidates, of this year ' s retreat. They joined to honor their queen with a sincere conse- cration of themselves to her. 45 FRENCH AND SPANISH CLUBS Virginia Gonsalves, president of El Circuit) Salamanca, opens the meet- ing with some interesting comments on Latin America. During the first semester Virginia had the opportu- nity of teaching Spanish to high school students. Miss Mary Lou Dauray, a student at Rhode Island University who has spent a year in France, was the guest of honor at the annual Christmas party held on January 6th. 46 REGINA PLAYERS One interested attendant of the annual Christ- mas Party is instructed in the art of bingo, as Frosty himself acts as overseer. Frosty, alias Lynn Tobin, and Mrs. Claus, otherwise known as Sally Del Bello, decide on a way to find the lost Mr. C. Mrs. Claus is surrounded by Santa ' s depressed elves, as the Fairy Princess begins her tale of woe concerning people who don ' t believe in Santa Claus. Wide-eyed children (and students) move right into this touching Dramatics Club production. 47 The Mission Club has an active unit on campus. The members were par- ticularly industrious in assembling material for Belize after Hurricane Hattie. Medicines and clothing were shipped via operation handclasp. Here the girls are busy auctioning off college banners. MISSION CLUB Nancy Sullivan, Barbara Kiejna, Ginny Del Bello, Dor- othy O ' Donnell, Kathy Siebert, Jane Gibney, and Rosanne Neumann set up tables for the Mission Fair. 48 Co-editors Jean Brennan and Mary Carol King enjoy their usual late check for published faux pas. EBB TIDE Left to right: Jan Kerrigan, Joan Gleckel, Mary Rose Warburton, Mary Coughlin and Maureen Kelly in a typical proof-reading session. t I Members of Ebb Tide staff get together to decide on next issue. 49 COMMUTER ' S CLUB Evelyn Sullivan, Meredith Horgan, Margaret Williamson and Concetta Goglia share the joy of this little girl as she receives one of her gifts at the Christmas party. The Commuter ' s Tea gives the faculty an opportunity to meet the mothers of our day hops. This social is usually a spring affair, one of the many activities of the second semester. Mary Dunn is very serious about her job as pourer. Meredith Horgan takes a cup of tea for her Mother. 50 Pat O ' Donnell illustrates the correct method of table setting for Theresa Nappi and Dorothy Dutra. The din- ner nook in the lab is a favorite place for Home Economics students. HOME ECONOMICS CLUB Butter cake with variation in sugar content is the subject of this experi- ment. Jean Petitti, Lorraine Hen- nessey, Juliette Di Cola and Janet Pacheco are the masters of this art. Sociologically speaking, Irene insists that Merton is the one. If the ominous pointer is any sign, Joanne and Kathy had better agree — or else! SOCIOLOGY CLUB What in the world is this? queries Liz, as Janice explains the articles in her hand to Joan and Barbara. Kathy, Joanne and Mary agree with Irene that she has found the most interesting objet d ' art outside of Greenwich Village! 52 QUEEN ' S CHORISTERS Boston College meets with Salve Regina at the Christmas Concert entitled Seasonal Sounds. The place is Ochre Court and the director is C. Alexander Peloquin. The majesty of the setting enhanced the groups ' repertoire which included Schubert ' s Mass, and the Carol of the Drum. The program also featured a col- lection of folk songs ranging from Aaron Copeland ' s work to Frostiana, a group of Frost ' s poems set to music. Salve Regina ' s soloist sings Danny Boy while Mr. Peloquin accompanies on the piano. Here ' s where successful concerts are born — at weekly rehearsals with Sister Mary Rosina, R.S.M. The workout ' s the thing to put our SRC basketball team in the swing — and their basketballs through the ring! With spirit like this, we ' ll top the A-l list! Good luck, girls! The team is off to a game — a positive victory, if we can judge by the confident smiles of Lynn, Kay, Martha, Maureen, and Rita. 54 1 1. t Lois Souza, leader of the group? inaugurates the cheers with her eagei confreres: Nancy Mannella, Ginny Del Bello, Pat Kerwin, Sheila Carroll, Diane Brenia, Kathy Skehan, Sally Conroy- and Genevieve Shanahan. Lyn Tobin, president of the W.R.A., confers with fellow officer Mary Bisson, Sue Mailloux, Elaine Horta and Kay Usher. W.R.A. 55 A group of Freshmen find themselves engrossed in an inter- esting explanation of one of the art treasures in Ochre Court. Is this a sales talk on painting with oils? Sister appears to achieve success with Alice Tadei, Carol Stone and Elaine Thomas.
