SWING INTO THE ORBIT OF ACADEMIC SWING INTO THE ORBIT OF ACADEMIC :llar scholars One of the milestones in our college career is investiture, the formal reception of the cap and gown. Pomp and circum- stance mark this ceremony as we march with dignity down the great staircase flanked by our Junior sisters. Freshman Investiture — an impressive and significant milestone of our college career — official acceptance as members of the student body — our long antici- pated caps and gowns — symbols of aca- demic achievement. The Great Hall awaiting us in all its dignity as we descend the majestic main staircase for the first time — a memorable December date. INTO THE UNKNOWN Here we are in our caps and gowns. As the program progresses, we wear our new robes more easily and become more familiar to our parents and friends who are as happy as we are. 24 STARS OF THE DAY The Sophomores, as sister class to the Seniors, offer their tribute and good wishes in the graceful rhythm of the dance. Miss Loretta Verde of the Class of ' 58, as representative of Sigma Phi Sigma, officially presents Alice Violet with her certificate of membership. This formal presentation is part of the class day exercises held each spring. 1 Class Day is the real day of farewell. Graduates and undergraduates gather together for a last con ' vocation. This occasion is memorable for the read ' j ' ng of the class ode, the prophecy, the history and the class will. The ceremonies terminate with the tree planting and the consecration of the student body to the Sacred Heart. 25 The traditional Honors Convocation is conducted annually on Mercy Day. Fourra- geres and Dean ' s list certificates are awarded to those students who have achieved aca- demic honors during the previous year. The capping of the Sophomore nurses and the reciting of the Florence Nightingale Pledge is also a part of this impressive ceremony. This year ' s Convocation was memorable for the testimonial presented to Reverend John Shea in recognition of his loyal and devoted service to the college. Judge Florence K. Murray of Newport gives some timely advice at Honors Convocation. This is a moment of triumph for the Sophomore Nurses. Rt. Rev. Matthew Clarke, V.G. lends his gracious presence to the capping ceremony. 26 ' I ' mm! , iff I r- 4r ' I J - mK V,.... : Si ( ,, • ■ W ] ■■■■:. Alice Violet Helena D ' Almeida and Deanna Encalada do them- selves proud in their white blazers and happy smiles. Salve Regina sponsors membership in two honor societies. Kappa Gamma Pi is open to students who have achieved a high level in scholarship, character, serv ice and leadership. Membership in Sigma Phi Sigma is granted to Juniors and Sen ' iors who have been outstanding because of their clear realisation of the Mercy ideal of education. v STUDENT GOV ' T Student Council is the intermediary body between admin ' istration, faculty and students. To achieve the perfect working of this definition is the ideal for which our student council at Salve Regina strives. In its thirteen year history it has been an effective agent, securing benefits which have profited the faculty and student, developing a feeling of ccoperation in all phases of college life. Charlene Vitullo Mary Carol King Earlene Mara Gail Fontaine 28 GOIN COURTIN ' Hearts and flowers were actually the motif for our Court Cotillion. We anticipated the usual April tradition by this February frolic with its Val- entine atmosphere. Gail Fontaine is crowned by the no less charming Virginia Shaughnessy. A moment to remember out of many happy moments of that evening. The Court Cotillion — a Freshman ' s cherished memory. Lights softly dimmed, couples swaying to the strains of Ken Reeves ' orchestra, awed by the splendor of Ochre Court. The anticipa ' tion of our first semi-formal dance at last fulfilled. The first of many significant social events of our college career. Loretta Maguire, Gail Fontaine, Charlene Vitullo and Gail Finn with their escorts proudly face the camera as members of a very successful dance committee. RING AROUND THE MOON February bleak — not for the Juniors. The Ring Ceremony and the Sapphire Ball usher in that first February weekend and over ' shadow all else that short month has to offer. The thrill of the ring bestowal, the shining splendor of the star sapphire, the glory of the formal ball in the unrivaled beauty of Ochre Court — February bleak — not for Juniors. Nan Kelly, our Junior rice president, welcomes the faculty, guests and parents to a very important, long anticipated event — the February 6, 1959 ring ceremony at Ochre Court. ,% Courtesy of Providence Journal-Bulletin X JOY AND LAUGHTER EVERYWHERE -)C 32 ■ X Salve Regina rejoices at Christmas. Ann Connors and Louise Grant formulate a soci- ology newsletter with the president of the Soci- ology Club, Susanne Dunne. MARIA REGINA SODALITY Socialists, striving to get To Jesus Through Mary , engage in many activities throughout the year. Then- spiritual activities include fulfillment of the daily duties, recitation in unison of the Office of the Immacu- late Conception, and, in general, lead- ing the sodality way of life. Among their apostolic works are the organi- zation of a religious articles table for the Mission Bazaar, planning the Christmas party for underprivileged children, teaching catechism, and counseling probationers interested in sodality. :: : «SJ I --- Sign up for a child for the Christmas Party! Claire Shan- non, Catherine Donahue and Ann Marie Doolan make sure their names are included in this major event of Christ- mas activities. 49 : - ot w s « The recitation of the Little Office of the Immaculate Conception is one of the spiritual activities of the so- dality. Such an exercise in- culcates love for the liturgy as well as deepening devotion to Our Lady. 39 Our college paper keeps the record straight, gives an over ' all picture of cam ' pus activities and is a challenge to our ingenuity as journalists. It has vari ' ety, wit, and a wisdom all its own. Ebb Tide plays a major part in our lives here at college. 40 Patricia Quinn illustrates newspaper layouts to a group of very interested journalism students. Ann Smith, business manager of Ebb Tide, joyfully presents the fruits of her labor to the editors, Carol Morse and Carol Reardon. REGINA MARIS A yearbook is the product of many ideas, numerous obstacles, infinite pa ' tience. deadline pressures and endur ' ing perseverance. The staff has aimed to reflect within the 1960 Regina Maris the student life of our College. It is yours to peruse now, a year from now, twenty years from now with the hope that you will find it alive and vibrant with many things you cherish. Meeting that deadline — Marie Klement and Alice Losordo, co-editors of the Regina Maris, hold important council as they write to Mr. John Ursprung, year- book advisor. Something funny? Nan Kelly and Martha Lyons, photographers on the yearbook staff, seem to think so as they select pic- tures to be used in the 1960 Regina Maris. Enjoying their work are Sandra Gai, Patricia Dunigan and Betty Lawton as they enthusiastically discuss the business angle of the yearbook. Charlotte Faella, Virginia Gonsahes, Beverly De Leone, and Lois Souza find learning about Spanish customs informative and enjoyable. Spanish culture, Spanish customs and Spanish traditions, the particular interest to members of El Circulo Salamanca. The Pinata Party and the observance of Pan American Day are two special occasions for Spanish students. Pilar Santamaria shows a Spanish shawl and fan to the club officers: Elaine Cronin, secretry-treas- urer; Carol Reardon, vice-president; Virginia Gonsalves, president. ;- ; . ' ii- v ?J s § £ s-T4aSZ3£ What could be more fun than a party held in the home of Mrs. Ramos, chairman of the Alliance Francaise, com- plete with a French menu? Charlotte Faella, Janice Rich- ard and Tullia Tudino found this question hard to answer. LINGUAL LASSIES Learning the geography of a country is an integral part of every language course. Here, members of the French class are studying the locale and perhaps dreaming of the day when they can personally view their study. Christinas, French and American style is commemorated by these French Club officers, Tullia Tudino, Anne Marie Doolan and Janice Richard before the College ' s Advent Wreath. Under the direction of Mrs. Ramos, the Alliance Francaise offers to all students of French an oppor- tunity to understand better ' the cul- ture of France. The meetings are conducted in French, and all members participate. At the Christmas meeting, held at Mrs. Ramos ' s home, the customs of the people are explained, and French Christmas pastries are served. 43 ' Basketball practice finds these members of W. R. A. hard at work improving their techniques. SPORTING MISSES Pat Silva takes advantage of the beautiful day, a clear tennis court, and the desire for exercise. Marion Oakes certainly adheres to the rule that a player must keep her eyes on the ball at all times when playing volleyball! V The cheerleaders headed by Irene McCaffrey run through one of the many routines they use to enliven both the spectators and players at the basketball games. An informal conference concerning basketball strategy is held by Nancy Rubino, Marie Klement, Lyn Tobin and Irene McCaffrey, the officers of the W.R.A. 45 STUDENT NURSES The nurses form a little unit of their own in S.N.O. They have their own problems, their own jargon and their own hopes and dreams. Most of them are on campus three days a week. Many of their meetings are held here and the Father-Daughter Dance which they sponsor is one of the most popular social events. Senior Nursing students arrayed in their uni- forms and capes have an important appoint- ment as they enter the hospital en masse. Just what are they anticipating! A solemn moment this! Candlelight, the nurses ' pledge and this offering at Our Lady ' s shrine make capping day unforgettable. These two are ready for business! Masked, gloved and buttoned, Betty Daly and Namida Ramanauskas face their day ' s work. Know your bones, girls! Here Cecile Belisle checks her diagram with Mary Rafferty ' s new found friend. 46 COMMUTERS f CLUB Summit meeting is held enroute to Angelus Hall by Helen Shea, Pat Sousa, Sue Hale and Nancy Ellis — all worthy officers of the Commuters ' Club. The faithful bus awaits its four o ' clock passengers as bus driver collects tickets from a jolly group of patrons. Now you see them, now you don ' t — our loyal commuters. The lour o ' clock bus whisks many of them homeward while others scurry to various points on cam- pus toward their private cars. Yet these students are very much part of us while here. In the classroom, in the clubs, in student discussions, in enthusiastic inter- est, they hold a high place. 47 The combined Glee Clubs of Holy Cross and Salve Regina gave a delightful Christmas concert to a very appreciative audience. Glee Club officers hold a brief business meeting as a prelude to the Christmas concert. Spring of 1959 found the Queen ' s Choristers and Manhattan Glee Club and orchestra enjoying themselves in a varied program of classical and semi-clssical numbers. A WORLD FULL OF SONG The Queen ' s Choristers are an interested and enthusiastic group of minstrels under the capable direction of C. Alexander Peloquin. There are forty ' two voices in the club. Con ' certs for the 1959 ' 60 season include joint concerts with Holy Cross Col- lege, Assumption College, and Provi ' dence College. Familiar tunes sung in varied styles, new tunes rendered with precision and grace — this is the Glee Club ' s main achievement. 48 ALL THE WORLD ' S A STAGE The Drama Club under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Ward introduced a new method of procedure this year which has proved to be most successful and enjoyable. The weekly meetings are conducted informally in a work shop manner with each member gleaning the benefits of tech ' nical instruction, practical experience, and con ' structive criticism. Last spring the Regina Players presented Family Circle. On stage the camera caught these members of the cast at a strategic moment while backstage Bernadette Strachen, Mary Rafferty and Jean Brennan are concerned with that last minute touch which means so much. Drama workshop occupies the interest of would-be actresses this year. Here we have Carol Morse about to begin her pantomime for her colleagues. DOMESTIC ORBIT Loretta De Cotis demonstrates the cooking of French fries to an interested group of Home Economics students. The Home Economics Club, one of the most active clubs on campus, is affili- ated with the American Home Economics | Association. Initiation of new members is held each September. The Advent Wreath Ceremony, the making of suit- able Christmas gifts for the poor children! and the aged, projects for the Missions — these are some of the endeavors of thei club. The fashion show and the farewell! party for senior members are the twot highlights of the year. I he clothing group are busy planning, making, and fitting skirts. Joanne Shea, Dorothy Dutra and Mary Dunn try their hands at stitching; Catherine Grady cuts a pattern while Lorraine Hennessey fits Mary Connolly. Ann Corcoran presents this quaint candleholder to Lois Scriven and Irene McCarthy for inspec- tion. The Home Economics Club officers are aware of all phases of their craft. 50 ART HAS ITS SPHERE Marcella del Bello, Geraldine Tenters, Doris Danesi, Carol Roarke, Virginia Inman, and Catherine Glennon will tell you that artists need not be born; they can be made. Here, they use their ingenuity and talent to fashion various Christmas deco- rations for the annual Art Club party. Rosary Hall is the scene of creative activities from one season to another. Just drop in during the fall — see the squirrels scam ' pering after leaves on the windows while staid Pilgrim maids stand guard — then Advent comes — liturgical symbols blossom on win- dows, trees, candles, wreaths are in the making — Angel forms emerge from cut paper. The Spring season means trips to the seashore to gather driftwood, shells and stones for creations. Over seventy happy girls strive To open a window on the infinite for the hungry soul of man. 1 1 -A ' ; a8S ' ' VM JHte ' i T ■gteBuJiM . From a casual lesson in theology by Father Georges to the best in fashions is quite a jump or is it? Good theology makes for the best in fashions. So says St. Thomas. Sophomore Class officers on the march — Beverly DiLeone, Mary Hennessey, Ellen Dunphy and Mary Carol King. 60 Time out for punch as the November Nocturne progresses. Here we have Charlotte Faella, Mary Rafferty and Eileen Jeanes with escorts. Mail time brings smiles and frowns. Anyway, everyone hopes for the best. Here Paula Blais, Joan Claffey, Paulette La Cava and Ann Marie Lukerson try their luck. So-fc ■ ' - IN CONFERENCE The Casino Coffee Shop is a popular Mecca for Sophs. Here Pam Hancock, Irene McCarthy, Helen Shea, Sheila Kelley, and Donna Byrolley enjoy an afternoon snack. . . . MAKE THE ROUNDS The camera caught Ann Kinsella, Catherine Donahue and Sheila Foley emerging from Angelus. Look! There she goes a little less bewildered with College life — much more wise in manner and speech — concerned with such things as November Nocturne, P.C. basketball games, the Casino Coffee Shop and the tricky Quiz when the clock strikes twelve. Look again, there she is haunting the mailbox — racing for the four p. m. bus — waiting in line for the phone — burning the midnight oil on Thursday nights. Who is she? Why, an adolescent academic who thrives on frappes, frats, and fashions, who is the scourge of freshmen and fratenizer with the seniors, a young sophis- ticate who has love enough to encompass the whole world, but too little experience to make it her own — all in all a sophomore. All around the wishing well! Maureen Horrigan, Ellen Dunphy, Mary Coughlin, Sue Gibbs, Ann Mary Sweeney and Maureen Hobson gather in pensive mood. Then the scene changes to the November Noc- turne. Here is the committee in gala attire. 62 These eager Sophs search the stacks, Wanda Tereska, Jean Bren- nan, Elaine Cronin and Nancy Leonard. Sophomores enjoy Brighter Day on TV. Is this dramatic irony, girls? Mary Jane Bruton, Mary Folks, Beverly Pozzi and Frances Garmize consult Sister Mary Rufina on the important question of novelties. 9 0t Lt(to4, A Junior is the third quarter of the whole — furi ' loving, ambitious, responsive — sports a star sapphire on her finger and has a new perspective through her field of concentra ' tion — spends a good part of each week in the library — is amused to find an occasional author who agrees with her. A Junior senses the beginning of the end and discovers there is much offered to her if she will but accept it. Homeward bound after a busy day, these Juniors are laden with the ever-present books. Some await the bus; others are enroute to Moore Hall and the coke machine. Alas! No coke! Perhaps a broom handle will solve the problem. The tang of Autumn in the air and the charm of the cliff walk lures Mary Ann McCaughey, Bernadette Stra- chen, Jane Skeffington and Brenda Phelan away from their books. Is it that serious, Margaret? Per- haps Dottie Cowles or Marjorie Moran have the answer. Let us hope so. 64 WEATHER THE STORM . . fe r- . ' v ™ - - : mP V V What ' s a rainy day in class management to Maureen McGillicudy, Carolyn Downs, Judy Ready, or Betsy Phillips. These class officers stick together in all kinds of weather. Louise Grant and Mary Jane Patriarca strum away in the lounge to the delight of Frances Gallant, Jeanne Baggott, Joan Cosgrove and Mary Lou Fox. 65 Not an apple for the teacher! This is simply a Hallowe ' en touch for atmosphere and good digestion. So it goes for Maureen McGillicuddy, Clare Shannon, Carol Morse and Ann Marie Doolan. Janet Pelletier waits for her two steady cus- tomers Karon Downes and Carmela Ricci before she starts the trek homeward. Is the frosting that good, Judy? Give us a taste. That is the obvious request of Marie McCarthy, Loretta De Cotis, Nancy Lally and Ann Cor- coran. Yes, we have our serious moments. Angelus Hall is our workshop, our port of call with all its vicissitudes and even its victories. CONTINUE AHEAD. There must be fun and nonsense, too. So up to the house top flew this « Seaavtb . . .
