To you it is given to speak not only in the persuasive words of human wisdom and exhortation but in the showing of the Spirit of God to us who are of your flock and under your guidance. In you, under the Vicar of Christ, we have our historical link with the origins of Christianity. In you is placed the honor of the Church in this diocese. There- fore to you we offer our filial obedience as our spiritual leader, to you we dedicate our loyalty and allegiance as our teacher and friend. For you we ask the presence, the power, and the grace of the Holy Spirit in the functions of your Ministry and in the fulfillment of your office as Chief Shepherd to us your Children. THE MOST REVEREND RUSSELL J. McVINNEY, D.D. Multiply upon him thy blessing — Roman Pontifical Consecration of a Bishop ■« r fesj The sea speaks to us in many voices. Yet in its varied sounds there is unity. Beneath the changing rhythm of its tides, there is a constancy and sense of the eternal. Like the sea, Fellow Students, your many voices resound among us. To you is given a unity of purpose in your religious, academic, and social life. Beneath the rhythm of each lies the constancy of faith and the vision of eternal truths. In recognition of your noble heritage and your high purpose as Salve Regina students we, the graduates, dedicate to you the 1959 Regina Maris. a Zhou hast one aim . . Sister Mary Hilda, R.S.M. As Christmas approaches, thoughts naturally turn to decorating. Never let it be said that the Juniors lack that special touch. ' Cause music makes the world go round . . . Sandy Gai, Pat Dunigan, Jeanne Sansonne, and Mary Ellen Donovan, check the beat of The Music Man. 73 Fund-raising projects — the Juniors ' cake sale appeals to all — even the calorie-conscious. Gotta listen to pass those finals. That ' s exactly what the Sophomore Sociology majors do during lectures. Tomorrow ' s leaders enthusiastically take down what the ancients did. 75 A few sophomores pose at their dance, November Nocturne. Autumn has its own gaiety. Sophomore Class officers, Peggy Cawley, Judy Ready, Maureen McGillicuddy, Anne Smith, and Carolyn Downs plot the finishing touches for their big social event. Calories, calories — after class a little snack at the Casino Coffee Shop helps sustain the hungrier ones until supper. Conversation never lags until the wait- ress comes with the goodies. 76 Judy Goff and Carmella Ricci concentrate on bridge as Mary Silva lends all her efforts to sophomore World Lit. A minute of between class study in the library saves doing that little bit the night before. A day to remember , . . September 24, 1958 . . . the sophomore nurses received their caps and with lighted candle recited their pledge to Our Lady. Here they are with our distinguished guest, Most Reverend Bishop Russell J. McVinney, D.D. Beverly DiLeone, eska, and Mary Class of ' 62. Wanda Ter- Healy lead CUSS OF 1962 A trifle shy at first but very soon at home — intro- duction to college life — green bows, beanies, de- merits — new teachers, new textbooks, new friends — a new world to live in. Anticipation — exams, weekends, vacations, and the event of the year, Court Cotillion — cherishes memories of many things and finds life amusing, exciting, and very much worthwhile. Traditions are held dear by everyone at Salve Regina. Students look forward to these with feelings of anticipation and joy. Here Pat Quinn ' 62, lights the first candle of the traditional Advent Wreath while other Freshmen are initi- ated into this important phase of their college days. Homeward bound — next year rumor has it, a helicopter will replace good old 350. Imported to highlight the freshman show — Mary Mar- tin and Ethel Merman. Initiation frights are ended as Freshmen entertain Soph- omores. Friday at last! That bid finally arrived — now off for a weekend of fun. Beware! Genius at work. When inquisi- tive Freshmen experiment with Chemistry — trouble in sight?! Study? — who us? — well, as a matter of fact the books aren ' t ornamental. Did it rain cats and dogs? Not quite! These teddy bears, giraffes, and assorted creatures are just tokens of childhood days. Although this meeting was called to elect a blue ribbon ani- mal, everyone felt so sure that hers would win that the judges just called it a draw. Drive your Chevrolet through the U.S.A.! — But these girls are per- fectly content to drive to the soda shoppe in town. Wait until the bills go home! The Avenue has so many beau- tiful shops — the prices aren ' t that high — but Dad!! 80  UICE Trr v ( We ' re a bit informal now and then. Janis Miles, Barbara Bal- zano, Anne Motte, and Jane Integlia discuss election of new members to Sigma Phi Sigma. Salve Regina sponsors two honor societies. Kappa Gamma Pi, the National Scholastic Activity Honor Society of Catholic Women ' s Col- leges, is concerned with a high level of achievement in scholarship, char- acter, service, and leadership. Membership in Sigma Phi Sigma, the National Honor Society for students and alumnae of colleges conducted by the Sisters of Mercy in the United States, is granted to students in both the Junior and Senior classes who have been outstanding in scholar- ship, loyalty, and service, to students who have a clear realization of the Mercy ideal of education. HONOR SOCIETIES There is a time to smile even in the world of scholarship. Kappa Gamma Pi claims as her own this year Anne Car- penter, Simone Laplante, Dolores Matoes, Inez Silva, Rosa DaSilva, and Anne Motte. 84 On September 24, Mercy Day, Salve Regina College holds its traditional Honors Convocation. The most important and awe-inspiring event is the capping of the Sophomore Nurses. Students attaining aca- demic honors for the previous scholastic year receive fourrageres and Dean ' s List Cards. Officially students enter a new aca- demic year with the turning of the tassel. CONVOCATION 85 (LASS DAY Junior class president, Bar- bara Balzano, receives the spade from tree orator, Jean Coughlin. THE STUDENT COUNCIL Barbara Balzano, President; Marilyn Sullivan, Vice-Presi- dent; Alice Violef, Secretary; and Deanna Encalada, Treas- urer — head 1958-59 Student Council. S.G.O., backbone of campus life, is the link between the administration and the student body. It serves as the voice of the students and maintains the honor and ideals of the College. During the past year, the Council ' s plans have evolved around its desire to keep stu- dent activities centered on the campus. The Council is also designed to try to solve various student problems. The Organ- ization is composed of members of the stu- dent body. For the first time this year, Council members have assumed the responsibility of checking in the Cafeteria. News, headlines, cuts, clipped out words, and paste all help to send EBB TIDE to press each month. Issued six times yearly under the direction of Sister Mary Donald, R.S.M., the college news- paper keeps students informed of important dates, happenings, and the very latest of news. This year the paper was staffed by Carol Reardon and Anne Smith, as co-editors; Anne Motte as fea- ture editor, and Marie McCarthy as business man- ager. Some are busy planning the lay-out for the SODAL1TE. All meet each week for a period of discussion, of things spiritual, for the recitation of Our Lady ' s Hours or for stimulating instruction by the Moderator. Personal sanc- tiflcation, the apostolate, and laity of the Church are the marks of a Maria Regina sodalist. Jane Integlia, Prefect; Barbara O ' Brien, Vice- Prefect, and Kathleen Hawkins, Secretary, are sodality leaders for 1958-1959. 104 THE QUEENS CHORISTERS The Queen ' s Choristers, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Robert Heywood, play an ac- tive role on campus. Shown above are the enthusiastic Freshmen eager to enthrall all audiences. Below are the upperclassmen ready for a formal presentation. The club had as guests several speakers, each an expert in a field associated with Home Economics. Social activities included the Fall Fashion Show, the Freshman initiation, the Advent wreath ceremony, the Christmas sewing bee and the Senior-Farewell Supper. Delegates of the Home Economics Club attended both Regional and National Home Economics Conventions. Officers of the Home Economics Club make arrangements for the Initiation.
