FCHJNDEP TERRITORIAL HEADQUARTERS 7Y9 NORTH STATE STREET F cs o THE TERFQITQNAL COMMANDER CHICAGO Io' ILUNOIS January 28th. 1958. Cadets of the 'Courageous' Session, Chicago, Illinois. My Dear Sons and Daughters of Courage a It is a joy to greet you in this special way, through the medium of your Session Year Book. I first met you as individuals, persons who had heard Christ's voice, in various parts of our Central Battlefield. Then you made me aware of your calling of God, in Christ, ' to leave all and .follow Him in service as Salvation Army officers. To this end there came a memorable and glad day when we met, in His Name, in the School for Officers' Train- ing, at a fellowship welcome dinner, and then for the first never-to-be-forgotten meeting in the place of a thousand and more sacred memories, that Upper Room , the Lecture Hall. My observations of you have encouraged me, and inspired me to pray more and labor more in your behalf, that without ex- ception each of you would receive inner light and deep con- viction to develop that quality of mind that enables one to face danger, without and within - COURAGEI Put on the whole armour of Godg follow the divine instruc- tions you have received, prove God in every situation in living and serviceg and glorify Him by continually being strong and of a good courage. My love, my prayers for you, and always nv faith in youl Yours sincerely, P ' f' Clilanrm 15. Batesj COHMISSIONER F I nn w -.-.,-- BRIGADIER MRS. What better can we ask of you of the UCourageousU Session than that you live up to your session name? You will face situations in which courage will he the one vital element. The gallant pluck to hold on in spite of everything will pro- vide the margin for eventual victory. God has given you promises. He will not fail. But all God's promises are conditional. God expected Joshua to use his military skill, his physical strength and his moral courage. These, together with God's almighty aid, would win a promised land. We too must use all the means at our commend, natural and spiritual, if we would inherit the promises. ln this adventure of Salvation Army Officership, in this calling to save and serve, you will need to be bold, determined, loyal, persevering ... you will need to he courageous! Go out and on with a courage born of faith in a never-failing God. Be will bless and keep and use you! The truth, of all our hopes the ground Is here within its pages found. Coffs ample grace for fallen men, His rare for our eternal good, The depth of His salvation plan, The doctrine of atoning Blood, The Scriptures' living words express And point the way to holiness. The classroom work opened to us new avenues of thinking and threw light on subjects that before were distant to us. Our knowledge of the Bread of Life, with its truths on which we build our lives, has been extended. Our Doctrines have been explained thoroughly. We were shown how to administer social aid to others. We were shown the workings of The Salvation Army from its beginning and how it has grown in its various phases through its many years of service. We learned how to keep the corps hooks. There was also a class on HHOW to Study and Like Itf' which proved to be very helpful and interesting. Sermon preparation, sermon auditing, sermon delivery, planning and conducting meetings, open-air work, and personal evangelism have equipped us to further extend God's kingdom. These training days have proved to us that experience is one of the best teachers. What the future holds for us as officers cannot be fully known, but we do know that each day will present new challenges and opportunities to use the knowledge that We have gained at The School for Officers' Training. p .,. it Y l . Every effort for God put forth in training was done in the strength of the Lord. When it is the Lord who gives the word of command then all work is clone with joy. Such was the case during the Christmas season. Knocking on doors., ringing hells and having opportunities to witness for Jesus through the selling of The Salvation Army's special Christ- mas issue of the Wal' Cry was more of a blessing and inspiration then we ever imagined. People were spoken to regarding their souls' condition., and on different occasions God led us to pray with people as we stood ringing the bells at the kettles. Raising money for Self Denial was a pleasant task because we realized that in a small way we were helping to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth. We sold Easter War Crys with a prayer in our hearts tha't God would reveal Himself to men as their Risen Saviour through this special issue. It was our pleasure and privilege to be a part of these special endeavors for God and The Army. .1 , .W 'Ju-s-nn -q,..n-11 ,,....,,.. qulwmsxgxv' ...vu '-Wm '- 4, .k J X The 'iHum is Bacon. ,f,.:f ww lg ::,,A:5 ,- ,ff-KW .W A- J,-Q... aging Q msg' W H A-1'fW,,,-aug-is N, t .-.,,,,.-J ul-.f egg, elf? 1- '0- '- -,a- S-x.4f..,,-r-N... These and countless other questions crowded our mind when we first heard the phrase. Vve knew something about open-air evan- gelism, about visiting Chicago corps for out- Sundayw meetings, but when it was announced that we would be divided into brigades, that there would be house-to-house visitation, tavern bombardments, visits to prisons and other in- stitutions . . . well, that was enough to scare the most stout-hearted among us. How could We ever face such frightening experiences, we won- dered? Now that we look back on it all, it is remark- able how those haunting little imps, Hfear and trembling, were so soon overcome hy two stronger companions, 'ccourage and confidence. All work and no play makes Johnny Cadet mighty dull-Jane, too. Letis face it from the start., training was no lark. But crowded between those arduous hours of study, field training, special efforts and work details were many delightful moments that will long remain as pleasant memories of 700 Brompton. The Fall party, the Commissioner,s Christmas party, the Valentine's Day party and tl1e trek to YVonderland Camp for our picnic-each brought its timely release, and all combined to bring memorable hours of frolic, feasting and fellowship. One never knew when an all-seeing shutter- bug might catch him in a most ungraceful pose. Or when he might find himself trapped into a parlor game in which he became the unsuspect- ing victim of some well-planned shenanigan. Those things are inevitable. But out of it all came an even greater realization that happy is the man whose heart is set freeg the people that can be joyful in theeg their joy is to walk in the light of Thy face, and still they are talking of Jesus' grace. 4.4, vs. 'sa-NJ!
