Luiggi Early in September we arrived in Naples for the busiest pgrt call of the cruise. In two short weeks we underwentatender availability period, received and gave an Adminlstrativelnspection resupplied the ship, had a change of command and saw something of southern Italy. The highlight of the visit was the change of com- mand, when Lcdr Weldon J. Bowling relieved Lcdr William!-1 Lockard as Commanding Officer. Captain Lockard was respected and liked by all, and on 14 September was bid farewell by his crew in ceremonies aboard the ship. The Destroyer Tender EVER- GLADES provided our tender services, during which a variety of repair and maintenance jobs were completed. To most of us Italy was a new experience, although EM3 DeLaura claimed ag many kinsmen here as Luigi the Sixth Fleet barber. Ltjg T1-ayn- ham and a contingent of the crew made an enjoyable three day ex.. cursion to Rome, and many of those who remained in Naples Saw the ruins of Pompei and the fabled Isle of Capri. apoli 4 yn: , 1 51 ., ,Hy f 5 1 .vw
