Lieutenant Commander Weldon Bowling Lieutenant Commander Bowling began his naval career as an enlisted man in November of 1949, serving for four years as a sonarman aboard the USS MADDOX CDD '7315 and the USS D. A, MUNRO CDD 4225. He was discharged as a Second Class Sonarman in October 1953. From September 1954 to June 1956 he attended North Texas State University, Denton, Texas, graduating with a BA degree. In January 1959, he reenlisted and served as a Journalist with the Headquarters Seaport Activity-Yokosuka, Japan and the Public information Staff of Commander Naval Forces Japan. In December 1959 he was selected for Officer Candidate School and received his commission in June 1960. Following his commissioning, he reported to the USS EVANS CDE 10235 where he served as Weapons Officer. His second tour ofduty was spent as Executive Officer and Navigator aboard the USS VIERO CMSC 2055 from February 1963 to September 1964. Upon detach- ment, he proceeded to Fleet Training Group Western Pacific for duty as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer, serving there until February 1966. From then until April 1967 he com- manded River Section 522, South Vietnam, receiving the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V for action against the Viet Cong. Prior to assuming command of SALUTE, Lieutenant Commander Bowling served as Commanding Officer, USS EXULTANT CMSO 4415.

'E Lieutenant Commander William H. Lockard Lieutenant Commander Lockard, a graduate of the Pennsylvannia State University, re- ceived his co m' ' ' ' m ission as an Ensign, United States Naval Reserve upon completion of Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island, in November 1957. His first tour of duty was spent aboard the USS BLACK CDD 6665 during which he served successively as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and Gunnery Officer. He was released from the active naval se ' ' ' ' rvice in October of 1960. Following his release, he pursued an interest in forestry. Returning to active duty in May 1962, he reported to USS CONFLICT CMSO 4265 as exec- utive Officer and Navigator. In March 1964, he joined the Staff of Commander Mine Squad- ron Four, serving as Mine Countermeasures Officer. On 3 August 1966 Lieutenant Commander Lock d ar assumed command of SALUTE in her home port, Charleston South Carolina. During the period of his command th h , e s ip steamed over 21,000 miles, deploying to the Caribbean and Mediterranean as well as carrying good will to the people of Canada during a one month visit to Montreal during Expo 67. Following his relief on 14 September 1968, Lieutenant Com d man er Lockard reported to the Commander in Chief Atlantic for duty as Operational Briefing Officer.
