Her keel was laid on 1lN0- vember 1942. She was launched on 6 February 1943 and placed in commission on 4 December. Within a year she was engeged in minesweeping and anti-submarine patrol operations in the Philippine Sea. During the fall and winter of 1944, SALUTE continued her minesweeping ef- forts in the Leyte Gulf and Philippine area, participating in the invasion which culminated in the liberation of the Philippine Home Islands in early 1945. On 7 May 1945 she departed for the Dutch East Indies to conduct sweeping operations and patrol duty. On 8 June 1945, while sweeping off Brunei Bay, Borneo, she was sunk by a mine exploding amidships. On ll July 1945 SALUTE was stricken from the Navy list. The present USS SALUTE CMSO 4705 is a wooden hulled, non-magnetic minesweeper displacing 765 tons and measuring 172 feet 11 inches in over- all length. Bachtold, USN Commander Mine Division Eighty-Five HISTORY Manned by six officers and sixty-five enlisted men, SALUTE is an integral part of the Mine Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and a unit of Mine Division Eighty-Five. SALUTE was commissioned on 4 May 1955 and has since participated in five Mediterranean de- ployments and has supplied services to the Naval Mine Defense Laboratory as well as joining in numerous amphibious operations. SALUTE has the designed capability of per- forming countermeasures against all types of sea mines and is able to conduct extended sweep and patrol operations. The ship took part in the Cuban Quarantine in the fall of 1962 serving as a patrol picket ship. In the spring of 1966 she participated in the successful recovery operation of a missing H-bomb off the coast of Palomares, Spain. During this period she remained at sea continuously for 57 days con- ducting sonar search. During her brief but event- ful lifetime, SALUTE has contributed greatly to the readiness of the Mine Force and National Defense. Big Jim WOGDEN SHIP IRO ME Q . Through the ages the colorful Maltese people have served under as many flags as have sailed into their beautiful harbor at Valetta. Three decades ago the Germans hit them with 1200 bombing raids. Perhaps only the iron will of the Maltese people survived this onslaught, but this spirit remains today. 00143 Unizep with USS SYLVA IA '. -J- s . 5 iii, Y'3fx f fu-.5 -.2 W- '- w 5 .e I 'I ' gg , ein! Old Man Winter had begun to make his presence felt and it was apparent from the start that we were in for a ride. Refuelings became dangerous and were held less frequently: Each day seemed rougher than the last. The rain and pounding slowed our progress and dampened everything but our spirits. Within sight of Bermuda we refueled for the last time from TRAVERSE COUNTY, bid her a grateful good-bye, and set our final course for home. 7, '11 l'JY L.L4.- R, li A 1 turn, ' .. fn-u.n--Q 'L' M, ff. ,- 1 J xx A, 1 W .1 '-A X 44 42 5 I Within the pages of this book, you have met a very special group of men, each one an individual with his own needs and inner resources much like any other group of seamen. But within these men is embodied a unique esprit, binding each to his fellows in deter- mination to unceasingly improve himself and his ship- to be more than ready for any committment. This spirit produces pride - pride in accomplishment and in determination to keep SALUTE worthy of her mot- to, In Omnia Paratus - literally, prepared in every way.
