WATLINGTON HOUSE REPORT Last year Watlington House was unfortunate enough to lose some of its top athletes and scholars to the Sixth Form Centre and schools abroad. However throughout the year we have averaged better than second in the quarters of all three terms. During the first term the House lost the swimming sports but received the penultimate position in the inter-house basketball competition, Watlington scored one more optime than Darrell for the overall total of the first term thus winning the Nicholl Shield, During the next term the House came second overall and second in soccer competition only losing one game to Saltus, As usual we won the Athletics easily in both senior and junior age groups by serving first in the relays and in most of the track and field events. The Cricket competition is as yet to come, however I feel in order to win the Nicholl Shield again the whole House must get down to some hard work and not leave the burden to one or two individuals to carry along. G. SPURLING SALTUS HOUSE REPORT This past year Saltus House is beginning to work back up the ladder of success again. This is due to the fact that the older boys of the school have left, enabling Saltus to play a dominant part both in sports and academic work. Academically I am glad to see the boys getting down to hard work and helping their House to struggle to achieve the Nicholl Shield. Yet all the Houses have some members who fail to achieve good results, from these I would like to see in future better results. On the reporting side, Saltus House has made fine progress and I think this is because the boys have known all the qualities of sportsmanship and are keen to represent the House. Following the Summer Holidays the Inter- House Swimming Sports were held at St. Georges and after hard swimming on the part of the House, we finished up in third place two points behind Butterfield, At the end of the Christmas Term, the House came through with a smashing victory in the Basketball Competition. Well done to all concerned. In the Easter term came the big challenge for Saltus House and that was the Football Shield. I think this was about the first time in ten years that Saltus have ever won the Shield by completely overwhelming the other Houses. Congra- tulations to all the boys who represented the House, Boxing this year was very unpopular and there was no competition, yet eager boys went on from the House to put on some exhibition bouts, against other boys. That ' s the spirit I like to see. Next was the Annual Track and Field Meet which in past years has not been a great favourite of Saltus although the House contains a few fine athletes. How- ever we still managed to pull in a fine third very close to Darrell. The Cricket Competition to be held sometime this term should turn out very interesting. With keen interest from the boys of the House we plan to put up a strong opposition to the other Houses. In closing I would like to give our thanks to the House masters, Mr. Sayles and Mr. Bestford for their interest in the House and we appreciate it very much. Lastly I would like emphasised that the determination and enthusiasm in the House is good but I would like to see it get even better. DAVID HILLIER House Captain, 20
