HEADMASTER ' S STORY Mr. Hallett retired from Saltus at the end of August this year after having spent the greater part of his life at the School - from pupil in 1917, Assistant Master in 1931 and finally as Headmaster from 1948 to this year, a total of nearly fifty years, as he also attended Bromsgrove School Oxford University in U.K. before qualifying for his chosen career. This steadfastness in pursuit of fulfilment of aims is typical of this gentleman, not only in academics but in daily approach to life and its commitments. The younger reader will remember Mr. Hallett for his attention to detail, in lessons and administration, in rehearsals for various School functions and his firm insistance on work well done bears its fruits later; he always set a firm example where industry and effort were keys to success in life. These younger people will remember the kindly help he gave them in solving some of their problems in School and then assisting them along the road to their chosen goals. Others of us who have known him for a longer time will remember him with affection for all the kindnesses shown us, for his help and advice on problems of a professional or personal nature which usually lightened our load and fre- quently resolved many of the problems. We shall also remember his ability on the sports field, especially at cricket, where he delighted us with his per- formances with bat and ball and obviously gained a great deal from the game which made him insistent upon pupils playing games to their obvious bnefit. It has been very evident that he enjoyed his work as a Schoolmaster and set a fine example by his increasing efforts on behalf of the School, in all phases of its corporate life. Above all else he is a gentleman in the true meaning of that often overworked word and it is to be hoped that other Bermudians will follow his example in entering the teaching profession and so serve their homeland whilst enjoying a satisfying career of helping others. We wish Mr. Mrs. Hallett many years of happy retirement, I thank them for all they have done for Saltus in the past and assure them of our warm welcome at School functions in the future. 17
