It brings people together in a way unlike any other. The pride is in performance, of achieving goals. There is something special about our students. Their pride transmits into everything they do. They try harder to attain their goals, through academics and activities. The students care more about their commitment to themselves, and to one another. Working as a team, with a spirit of togetherness, students at Saltsburg strive to be the best—to have pride. Pride is what pulls it all together at S.H.S. That is what the 1987-88 school year amounted to at Saltsburg Junior-Senior High School. New friendships were made and old friendships were renewed as the school year passed, leaving a corresponding aggregation of memories. Some moments of our “high school years” have been brought together in this yearbook. For some, it is the most important year as we prepare ourselves for graduation, and for others it is another period of life that's helped us to mature and grow. In either case, we can't go back to the past and change any of it. Unified, we have made the best of it! Pondering said, Lee expands his of the Aztec what was Nelmes knowledge history. 6 I Left: “No Charlie, they are not opposed to be flipped to the ceiling, exclaims Richard Rugh and Vince Spellane. The Saltsburg Trojans experienced a comeback season that rivaled that of Lee lacocca, who took the dying Chrysler Corporation and restored it and himself to health. The football team went from a discouraging 1-8 season to an outstanding 7-2 record, capturing a spot in the playoffs. This enthusiasm carried over to all the sports and into student life at Saltsburg. The energy and drive that made the Trojans §1 was mirrored in every face. No longer afraid to face a challenge, students were ready to challenge the future with confidence and pride. We grew this year with the help of our new principal Mr. Not to. We found the courage to face our mistakes and come back strong, knowing that the tide turns, that after defeat can come victory; after failure, success. but ea exuberance walking d mark at t tburg is hard to define joghize. There is an is tangible to anyone Malls. Visitors often rets and Mr. Not to says the feeling here is unique among the high schools he has seen. At Salts burg, support is shown not only for sports teams, but also for the majorettes at their annual competition, for the cheerleaders in November's I.U.P. contest, for the band in their concerts and marching displays, for the chorus at their spring chorale, for the Special Olympions carrying our school colors in track, and for everyone representing Saltsburg in any way throughout the year. Motivating the junior high student council, Mr. Klimchock takes pride in advising them to take part in another Leadership Workshop. Above: Janie Burris, Cheri Stitt, Deanna Richards. 10 tudents at Saltsburg refuted William Shakespeare's belief that we cannot all be masters as they gained recognition for outstanding achievements in various areas. Through their accomplishments, they continued their climb to greater successes and opportunities. Faculty and administration at Saltsburg have responded by r raising expectation standards for students. With this ambitious challenge, they are continually improving performances which have resulted in higher levels of student achievement. This year many students appeared on the honor roll list, with the minimum required G.P.A. of 3.0. Also there were those who pushed themselves and obtained an outstanding 4.0 G.PA. Some of the best students were recognized in the National Honor Society. These students display outstanding performance in the areas of leadership. scholarship, and character. An example of achievement occurred on October 24, 1987, as students enthusiastically cheered Vince Ciocca while he received the Extra Effort Award from KDKA. The award represents outstanding scholarship, superb athletic ability, and involvement in many school activities. Mr. Klimchock’s nomination of Vince marked Saltsburg’s first attempt at winning that award, and he was chosen over a field of 200 other candidates from Western Pennsylvania. As these students struggled to achieve academically they raised the standard of excellence for all students. Keep in mind the words of t popular proverb that states, “Success is a journey, not a destination. ’ always nice to know that someone will go out of their way to help you, and Mr. Klimchock has done that for me. Thanks Mr. Klimchock” —Senior Vince Ciocca I ul J 1 Mr. Hunter expounds upon the organization and plan of the human body to Shawn Duffalo. 3 lb umctonv wv Twila Burrell escorted by Roy Milieu Erika Mitchell escorted by Mike Brown Barbie Painter escorted by Wayne Harvat Right: Lisa Wells escorted by Elmer Shearer 79X7 'wo4tteco t£ t ? f2,ucc he anxiety . .. the excitement he anticipation ... the glamour we all have been, waiting for. Only yesterday we were running up three flights of stairs, trying to find our next class, looking for the cafeteria, and dodging seniors. Six years later, all of that seems very far away, and seventh grade is just another memory. Our first two years were colored by the old high school, where our biggest problem was trying to remember where the “up” stairs were. Ninth grade brought a new school and new responsibilities. We were the leaders; we were freshmen. “Whispers of Love” was the theme for the first Sweater Hop in the new school. Much of our sophomore and junior years were focused on our prom. In our sophomore year, we hosted the winter dance to raise money. Magazine sales, putting together an original design, with finding a date, and just the right outfit, became a major part of our junior year. Our prom, “Today, Tomorrow, and Always”, will remain one of our most important memories. Our final first day of school came, and with it, reality. This was our last year, and we made it the best. Our class hosted the Halloween Dance, and participated in many activities, including the Battle of the Classes, numerous clubs, and spirit week. We attended the final football, volleyball, and basketball games, celebrating successful seasons. Among these events lay the preparations for our futures. Applications were sent out, promises were fulfilled, and decisions were made that would affect the rest of our lives. Memories of S.H.S. are something that we will always treasure. From playing dodgeball in the old gym to Mr. Fenoglietto, from dances to marching in the rain, they are part of us. For these memories, along with our learning and experience, are the foundations of our lives. 4s our days at Saltsburg High School become part of the past, our future calls to us. We go willingly, with the knowledge that if we cannot change the world itself, we can at least change the world in us. —Heather Young We walk until we run and don’t look back ... To love those you TEACH is quite another.” The above quote best exemplifies my first impression of the professional staff when I arrived at Saltsburg Jr-Sr High. Since then I have observed nothing to change that opinion. They seem to have a very positive and sincere relationship with their students. That conveys a mutual respect and caring that goes beyond the usual student-teacher relationship. The relationship among staff members displays the same characteristics, and resembles a family situation. The encouragement and cooperation given to me, since my arrival, has been extremely helpful and has made the administrative transition very smooth. I am looking forward to many years of continued cooperation for the benefit of our students at Saltsburg. Rick Lowman History 133 EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION f his year at S.H.S., we are excited about an innovative new program called TABS. The word TABs is an acronym for Tracking Achievement. It represents a program which is designed to assess and monitor a student’s skills in the areas of English and math. Every semester all the students in grades 9, 10, II, and 12 take a math TABS and English TABS test to determine their competence in these two subject areas. From this test, students’ strengths and weaknesses are assessed. Utilizing this testing information, an English or math teacher schedules time to help the students improve their skills. Also under the direction of Dr. Sarokon, two math interns through Chapter 2 funding provide individualized help with the TABS program. With the mastery of several new objectives, the program has been a tremendous help in improving scores on the California Achievement Test and the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Slrwii-YairskHi SludllM 161 Nhyline manufacturing corp. 101 A Sagamore Hill Road Pittsburgh, PA 15239 Congratulations to the class of ’88 from Hyline Manufacturing 162 CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES! Around the turn of the century many school age children could be seen laboring in the fields, factories, mills and mines of our country. Many were being denied the opportunity to obtain a good education while they helped put food on the family table. In the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania, the “Breaker Boys” (pictured at left) worked picking slate and other impurities from the coal. Working above the dusty coal shutes was unhealthy and dangerous. There were a high number of accidents, many were injured and some fell to their death through the shutes and machinery below them. For a 10 hour day, six day week, they could expect a payment of two to three dollars. If they were able to muster the strength after a backbreaking day at work, they might attend school at night. The concerned men who founded the United Mine Workers of America stated in their International Constitution that one of the Union’s objectives (Article 2, Section 7) was “To provide for the protection and education of our children by prohibiting their employment when they should be in school and demanding that good schools shall be freely available to all to the limits of their ability and desire for education.” Organized labor leaders played key roles in making the public aware of the injustices of child labor. This led to the enactment of strictly enforced child labor laws and the evolution of the American system of free public education. As you enter the working world, remember— Education is precious, build on it, use it wisely, and never take it for granted. . .
