Below: Heidi Shearer and Bonnie Shearer. Reach out—a world is waiting. We find S.H.S. to be a kaleidoscope of new experiences and bright horizons. Here we strive for originality. We reach for a way to develop ourselves, to become individuals. We take repeated stabs at the unknown, attempting to discover “why”. Sometimes, strenuous efforts are rewarded only with empty minds and aching bodies. Other times we reach our goal with understanding and clarity. With academic, athletic, artistic, musical, and leadership awards behind them, the students, faculty, and administrators are challenged at S.H.S. with the unending quest to excel in whatever they attempt to do. hinq Gut —...— , i eG eacfiinq Gut SALTSBURG HIGH SALTSBURG HIGH Left: A smile is worth a thousand words. These words can be heard echoing through the halls at S.H.S. while the cheerleaders host the annual pep assemblies. “We just try to get the crowd to participate,” comments cheerleading captain Susan Fulton. “The more involved the students get, the more spirited our school becomes.” Saltsburg High’s enthusiasm was quite evident during spirit week when a number of activities were sponsored by the cheerleaders to unite the student body and arouse school spirit. The various themes for the week were, “Hat Day,” “Red and White Day,” and “Stinger Day.” The highlight of Spirit Week was the door decorating contest in which each homeroom battled to capture first place. Saltsburg is surrounded by an atmosphere of enthusiasm and emotion, and highlighted by the excitement of athletic events and pep rallies. Excitement, tension, and suspense—a stimulating part of life at S.H.S. Underclassmen girls climb to the top! The students are excited that Friday is finally here. A crowd gathers to cheer on the senior volleyball players. The first day of school began on September 2, 1986. Changes in the curriculum and policy set the tone for a year full of academic highs as students sought a quality education. The new “credit” policy was felt as this year’s sophomores and their successors strived to obtain more credits, because of new state regulations. This new policy required an involvement on the part of the students—an everyday involvement. Also the new class officer election system, devised by first year guidance counselor Mr. Klimchok, showed clearly the goal of the administration; it required a commitment of the students to get involved. The 1986-87 school year provided students with many opportunities to get involved. Students were able to choose from activities such as Taxidermy Club, Varsity Club, F.F.A., Yearbook, Student Council, Students Against Drunk Driving, Saltshaker, Band, and Chorus. In addition the Gymnastic Club, Intra-Mural activities, Y.E.A., and Craft Club were offered to expand students’ fields of interest. The Student Council presented a Drug Awareness Program, coordinated a Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, and held a Dance A-Thon for Children’s Hospital. Also the advanced physics class produced and presented a Senior Slide Show. Involvement also took place in other forms such as long hours of practicing for a sports activity, preparing and planning to host the Cheering and Majorette Contests, and practicing for a concert. Behind all of these were many long hours of practice and hard work. The determination to be the best gave everyone the incentive to strive to make S.H.S. a place of which to be proud. The students at S.H.S. show off their “HOT fashions. Right: The seventh graders take a break and eat lunch outside. Trying to achieve the look that’s right is what this year’s fashions are all about. The styles ranged from leggins, oversized sweaters, and metallic shoes, to the traditional Levi’s, blue jean jackets, and high tops. Whether it’s fad or fashion, the halls of S.H.S. are one of the best places to find the latest in dress expressions. An attitude of individuality entered our school in the past year. The new fads, fashions, and trends that were brought about in 1987 were a vent for unique personalities. That’s what fashion is all about. What does fashion mean to Saltsburg High School? “Being trendy is too tacky! Originality is the best statement of fashion. Whether it’s with red hair, or no hair at all, try to get your point across,” states Julie Hall. Lisa Soler comments, “I dress preppy because I like to be carefree and unrestrained.” As for next year, we’ll just have to wait and see what new styles develop! ion. After reaching the athletic field, the homecoming court watched the band’s pre-game show. Now, everyone was set for a night of entertainment. During halftime of the Saltsburg vs. Conemaugh Valley football game, five young ladies took the traditional walk down the 50 yard line. Then the big moment arrived. A hush fell over the crowd as Sue Fulton was crowned the new Homecoming Queen. 13 j [ -J-rea t Si tri( ies in Saltsburg High is a school of diversity. Students here come from a variety of backgrounds and have developed a multitude of interests. To satisfy the needs of students and their desire for information and activity, S.H.S. is making an effort to see that each student’s academic needs will be met. Striving to maintain its high standards, S.H.S. forged ahead, planning and developing new programs, while renovating and fine-tuning the old. Recently many changes have been made in our curriculum. Several classes have now incorporated the use of computers with everyday teaching. As an added elective, typing is now offered to ninth grade students. In addition, an agricultural mechanics class, environmental science program, trigonometry, and an Advanced Placement English class have been added to our curriculum. For those students who wish to study a foreign language other than Spanish, French I and II classes have been added at S.H.S. Two other new courses now available are the newspaper and yearbook classes. The seventh graders have also begun new traditions in the course work of the future underclassmen. A skills lab has been designed to help the younger students become more proficient in the use of the computer and the library. Courses in composition and careers have also bolstered the curriculum. Other programs recently introduced to the younger grades are TELLS math, TELLS reading, and Unified Arts for 7th and 8th graders. Pre-Algebra has also been added for sophomores. One final but important change in our curriculum is the required use of the library resources for all senior high students. This research is taking place in tenth grade health classes, eleventh grade social studies classes, and twelfth grade English classes. In all, a total of 30 hours of library work are realized by each student when he graduates. Mr. Judge points out “a word to the wise” to Shannon McMillen. r £ -I K?I Y. Entering high school was an exciting and frightening experience for all of us. From that point, there were many distinct events that made us who we are now—Saltsburg High School’s graduating class of 1987. Being number one is always fulfilling. The football, basketball, volleyball, and softball teams, the cheerleaders, and the majorettes have all contributed first place trophies to S.H.S. in the past six years. Trying our hands at fundraising as juniors, our class sold over 87,000 worth of magazines for the prom of 1986. With the money from our Freshman Sweater Hop, “Special Moments”, and our sophomore Christmas dance, “Mistletoe Magic”, added to this sum, our junior prom was “A Night To Remember”. Starting a new tradition at S.H.S., we crowned Terry Grimplin and John Kaito prom queen and king. During our senior year, we participated in a variety of interesting clubs. The seniors led the school through “Spirit Week” and soon afterward hosted the Halloween Dance. June 5, 1987, marks the end of our high school career. These years have been a time of learning, understanding, and even sadness as we say good-bye. Now just memories, our high school years are a foundation on which we’ll build the rest of our lives. “Good-bye, S.H.S. and thanks!” oowg,-. Summer ol ’69 ITower-. Y d ow Rose l Color. Throughout the summer and into the school year, the cheerleaders have been hard working and dedicated athletes. This year the Varsity Cheerleaders hosted the 24th Annual Tri-County Cheerleading Contest. Although this competition required many hours of practice for the cheerleaders, these girls took time out to plan various activities for the student body of Saltsburg High. 38 This year promoting school spirit was the main goal of the cheerleaders and their advisors, Linda Brown and Debra Shirley. After leading the crowd in a Homecoming pep assembly and organizing an entire week dedicated to raising school spirit, the squads began to see some results. The students at S.H.S. take pride in what they do. Thanks to the cheerleaders, Saltsburg High School possesses an atmosphere of enthusiasm and high self esteem. Pep... Spirit... VOLLEYBALL This October brought the end of yet another successful season for the girls volleyball team. By only losing two games, the girls took second place in the Indiana County league and qualified to play in the District competitions. Dedication and enthusiasm are just a few words that can describe the spirit of our girls this year. These qualities seemed to pay off when the Indiana County All-Gazetteland team was picked — Mrs. Cunningham was voted coach of the year and Coreen Brady captured the most valuable player. Under the direction of John Shurina and Kevin Judge, these boys worked hard toward a common goal—a successful season. Although the Trojans were a game short of being I.C.L. and Appalachian Conference West Champions, they never lost their spirit. After a dry spell of over two years, this new crop of Trojans rebounded to become a source of pride at Saltsburg Junior-Senior High School. A Those students at Saltsburg High School who are enrolled in vocational agriculture join together to form the national organization known as the Future Farmers of America. FFA is an integral part of the curriculum of vocational agriculture departments in the public school systems. The students involved in this club are exposed to many activities. These projects include field trips to the fair, farm shows, and an annual fruit sale. Since many members of the F.F.A. are looking to careers in farming or dealing with agriculture, this club gives them some of the experience and background they need. F.F.A. members learn by taking part in conducting meetings, speaking in public, participating in contests, earning awards and recognition, and becoming involved in cooperative efforts and community improvement. This organization clearly strives to achieve its main goal which is the development of agricultural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. F.F.A. OFFICERS Row 1: John Clark—President. The teachers have maintained excellence by being organized, energetic, conscientious, and creative. They continually strive to meet the individual needs of their students. They continue their education to be aware of changing needs strategies, and conditions to prepare their students for today’s world. Academic excellence is achieved at S.H.S. by exploring the students’ interest, capitalizing on their successes, and enabling them to develop self-confidence. It is our teachers’ professionalism and dedication that contributed to the academic excellence at S.H.S. Six new teachers added their experience and ideas to this year’s teaching staff. Around the turn of the century many school age children could be seen laboring in the fields, factories, mills and mines of our country. Many were being denied the opportunity to obtain a good education while they helped put food on the family table. In the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania, the “Breaker Boys” (pictured at left) worked picking slate and other impurities from the coal. Working above the dusty coal shutes was unhealthy and dangerous. There were a high number of accidents, many were injured and some fell to their death through the shutes and machinery below them. For a 10 hour day, six day week, they could expect a payment of two to three dollars. If they were able to muster the strength after a backbreaking day at work, they might attend school at night. The concerned men who founded the United Mine Workers of America stated in their International Constitution that one of the Union’s objectives (ArticIe 2, Section 7) was “To provide for the protection and education of our children by prohibiting their employment when they should be in school and demanding that good schools shall be freely available to all to the limits of their ability and desire for education. Organized labor leaders played key roles in making the public aware of the injustices of child labor. This led to the enactment of strictly enforced child labor laws and the evolution of the American system of free public education. As you enter the working world, remember— Education is precious, build on it, use it wisely, and never take it for granted. . .
