Finally ours ... a new source of pride and self respect. A new 6.5 million dollar high school. Originally the Jackson Elementary School, the new Saltsburg High School is three times larger as a result of the renovation. The additional square footage resulted in 17 new classrooms, a computer laboratory, a vocational agriculture shop, an audio-visual room, a band room with separate practice rooms, an industrial arts shop, a library, an air conditioned auditorium equipped with lighting designed for stage productions, a gymnasium with seating capacity of 1174, a main office, guidance office, and health suite. 7 Lynne Carrick The girls in the band stir up excitement during the pep assembly. 4 It did not take us long to realize that just as old traditions are an important part of the school community, new traditions play an equally important role. The year began with fond memories of the old and a sense of excitement as we experience the new. It became evident that both tangible and intangible changes were in the offing. While we were excited about being able to attend a new facility, we arrived with a sense of relief in finding that the faces and traditions remained unaltered. After years of dusty halls and crowded i have an ultra-modern school building. The dents and faculty familiarizing themsel facilities. We asked a couple students new school. Their comments finally come out of the dark ag to the space age in one short summe something out of a science fiction m everything. We have things now that ing before. David Keck, Attitud er. There is a one al expresses the and how great it is. We all feel that we 1 ful. It will be up to each individual student, retary, janitor, cook, and administrator to about what we have. We want to be able to pride for our new building on to future gen Dramatic changes have taken place in our environment leading to a greater sense of self discipline and pride. However, we have retained our identity as evidenced through the continuation of such Trojan traditions as the first day assembly, pep rallies, battlecry competition. Homecoming, Senior Night, the Sweater Hop, the Junior-Senior Prom, and finally Commencement. Yes, SHS has changed on the outside. This improvement of school facilities is an important step in the development of our community. But the values of education, leadership, dedication, and school spirit that have been a part of SHS for many years will continue into the future. This heritage remains and flourishes. The beat goes on! Senior spirit at the pep rally. Above: Mark Eckels, Mark Repine, and Don Kelly. Left: V-I-C-T-O-R-Y that's the Junior Battle Cry!! Friendship is an inevitable part of our education—we learn from it and we prosper by it. During an informal discussion with friends and teachers our views are broadened. While working on club projects we comprehend the meaning of teamwork. Together we cheer our teams on to victory, we share our lunches, our homework, our hang-ups, . . . our cares. Friendship ... a personal thing, an intimate thing, a wonderful thing, especial at Saltsburg Junior-Senior High School. David Okopal Senior Volleyball Team Members 10 Mr. Rovison helps Bob Sharp. Friday, September 28th, started out like any other Friday in our high school. But this did not last for long because the Homecoming festivities for 1984 were about to begin. The first activity was the pep rally! The cheerleaders presented a dance routine and the band entertained the students with a variety of pep songs. We wished the Homecoming Court luck and inspired the football players on to victory! Later that evening, as anxious spectators lined the streets, the Homecoming parade was led to the field. The parade consisted of the band and cheerleaders escorting the Homecoming Court. During the half time show, the court was announced while the band played the song, All Time High. After an intense drum roll, Jennifer Atkinson was announced as the 1984 Homecoming Queen! The festive day concluded with the Homecoming dance honoring the Queen and her court. The last dance ended and the D.J. packed up, but the Homecoming celebration for 1984 will be remembered as a special moment in our school years. A society depends upon its educational system to lead the way to a better future! During the past few years of construction on our school, the entire community has undergone a transition. Business and civic leaders are rebuilding our town, and new additions include: housing for the elderly, moderate family apartments, convenience banking facilities, and self-service pharmaceutical stores. CLASS SONG: There's No Stopping Us by Oily and Jerry The class of 85 entered Saltsburg High School apprehensive, but excited. The school represented a new world to all of us. By eighth grade we had some confidence and were becoming a part of life at Saltsburg High. It was the first year we were able to participate in any activities. As Freshmen we elected class officers for the first time. Our biggest responsibility was to sponsor the 1982 Sweater Hop. The theme was Love Lasts Forever and the theme song was Endless Love. We were proud to be a part of the school during a year in which Saltsburg was county football, basketball, cheering, and softball champions. In our Sophomore year, we had many choices to make. Many of us chose to take the academic or business courses. Others chose to go to Vo-Tech. Another choice was deciding on a class ring. Our Junior year was very special. It was the last year for the old school. It was even more special to us, because we had the privilege of preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom. We used A Night in Heaven as our theme and Heaven by Bryan Adams as our theme song. Finally our senior year brought many changes. The greatest change was entering the new high school. We have learned how to deal with problems and how to cope with difficult situations. But maybe the most important thing we have learned is how to deal with change. Also, we were given the responsibility of setting new traditions and instilling a sense of pride in the new Saltsburg High School. As the time draws near, each event becomes an unforgettable memory, from the first day of high school to the last exam. Seniors realize that the world is theirs and the future is now. 21 VICTOR BUCHINSKY tremors Above: Wendy Casciere Right: Vickie Adair Far right: Ruth, Laurie, Jeannette, Donna, and Tammy 22 DIANE DUNCAN TRACY DUNMIRE SUE DUNN DAVID EMANUEL MIKE ENCISO SHELLI FULTON TONY GAIS LAURIE CRESKO miors Above: Sue, Joyce, and Shelli Right: Pam Heiple Far right: Seniors at the pep rally. A Team Behind Teams with sideline smiles One Team did not require helmets, kneepads, or any other familiar sports gear to perform successfully. Equipped with only smiles and spirit, the cheerleaders boosted the morale of the teams. Eye catching mounts and daring stunts added excitement to timeouts and pauses in football games, wrestling matches, and boys and girls basketball games. The girls also provided colorful banners and signs to promote school spirit for the Trojan Teams. Few realize the hard work and dedication it takes to be a cheerleader. The cheerleaders started their season over the summer by attending cheer camp at La Roche College. The varsity squad proudly came home with a first place plaque and several spirit awards. The squads then practiced their new cheers all through the summer. They came to school fired up and anxious to cheer. During the entire year the cheerleaders created an atmosphere of pride and spirit for the teams and the student body. They also participated in the Tri-County Cheering Contest where they received the first place trophy for the dance routine and second place trophy for their cheer. Let's hear it for the hard working girls on the sidelines . .. Thanks cheerleaders. Sue, Marlia, Marty, Lynne, Chrissy, Tracy, Michele, Sherry, Tracy, Brandi, Terry, and Jody. The team worked as one unit: practicing, running, losing weight, and building up their muscles. All of the hard work and dedication paid off as they finished with a record overall. Sacrifice was the name of the game for the matmen. Not only was time given up after school for practices, normal meals became a thing of the past as the athletes either starved or over-indulged themselves in food in an effort to make weight. In most sports, the main objective of the participant is to gain victory for his respective team, not for himself. Wrestling, however, is unlike most sports. The participant must also strive for personal victory. Wrestling also is one of the most intense, and pressure-filled sports. The total attention of the spectators is focused on the two individuals, not a group, and the pressure on these two individuals is mind-boggling. These individual matches are a tribute to the great intensity, enthusiasm, and dedication to the sport that all of the Grapplers at S.H.S. showed so clearly throughout the season. With each class having an average of 20 students and representatives of each area high school, students have to meet certain standards including attendance, attitude, and school performance, to be accepted into the program. Applications are accepted from all ninth grade students for the three year programs. The courses include: Appliance Repair, Automotive Body, Auto-Diesel Mechanics, Building Trades Maintenance, Carpentry, Cosmetology, Electrical Occupations, Food Management, Health Assistant, Heating-Plumbing, Machine Shop, Marketing and Distributive Education, Masonry and Bricklaying, Metal Fabrication and Welding, and Mine Equipment Maintenance. All of the programs are three years in length with the exception of Marketing and Distributive Education and Health Assistant, which are two years. L uture farmers of america Future Farmers of America is a national organization consisting of students interested in studying agriculture. Its primary aim is the development of agricultural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. Through active participation in tne FFA, members learn by taking part in tne conducting meetings, speaking in public, participating in contests based on occupational skills, earning awards and recognition and becoming involved in cooperative efforts and community improvement. Tne FFA offers the opportunity for achieving a personal goal of becoming productive citizens in our democracy. The activities of this club include field trips to the fair and farm shows and an annual fruit sale. Many of these students are looking to careers in farming or dealing with agriculture and this club gives them some of the experience and back ground they need. Today's office is an exciting place in which to work. Technological changes have made office work easier and more accurate. The success of a company depends on the efficiency and productivity of its employees. In addition to business skills and knowledge; personality, appearance, and business behavior are very important for success in the office. no Mrs. Stiffler and Wendy Casciere. Mrs. Ross and Bernice Hartman. Christine Pomposini and Mr. Judge. A LEARNING OPPORTUNITY The Student Secretary program is a part of the office practice class. This class helps to prepare the girls for a career in the office by sharpening their office skills and improving their ability to get along with others. They review and reinforce their business skills such as spelling, math, grammar, and vocabulary. They also build problem-solving and decision making skills. This class also helps them develop a positive self-concept and the ability to organize their work. As Student Secretaries, the girls become aware of the implications of technology in modern office procedures. By doing their work, they gain hands-on experience which includes using the thermofax machine, the ditto machine, the photocopy machine, and the word processor. in outh education association Y.E.A.—Row 1: Chrissy Reese, Lisa Soler, Heather Young, Amy Curran, Jennifer Jancay. They attend weekly practices, various first aid courses, and study vehicle rescue or forest fire fighting. All the firemen learn how to assist in traffic control and are expected to learn where every piece of fire, rescue, and medical equipment belongs in the truck. Norman Bortz Industrial Arts Carol Buterbaugh English 130 I guess it's the same old cliche—I've known since I was in elementary school that I've wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. I was one of those “odd kids who actually liked school. And since I was a paper pencil person, I didn't find homework a gruesome task. Maybe my bossy tendencies or my drive to always be a leader inspired me to reach the title of “teacher. And like most females, 1 suppose I have a little of the mothering instinct in my bones. Teaching provides me with the opportunity to be a mother and confidant from 7:30 until 2:30 and then I can just be me the rest of the time. That fits my lifestyle just fine!! Seriously, I really like helping students to gain something. I, personally, receive a sense of accomplishment when they accomplish something and naturally Reading is the most important skill to possess. I like kids and I like listening to their ideas. Occasionally I feel I've wasted an entire day, but I keep thinking that someday something that I've done will make a difference in some student's life. That will more than make up for all those down days. by Becky Stiffler assembly. acuity I Vf Ron Gaudhi Physical Education Patty George Science Bob Flack Science Jerry Gasperini English Grace Carey Librarian Mary Lee Cunningham Physical Education Lewis Fenoglietto English Joanne Foster Music Mr. Hunter and his ninth grade class observe cells under the microscope.
