OUR SPECIAL THANKS EXTEND TO ALL THE DEDICATED MEMBERS! ERIC WHITESEL ■ Our Homecoming was held on Friday, October 22nd. For the occassion, the cheerleaders chose the theme of Western Day and everyone came to school in their western “duds” to show their spirit for our Trojan Team. More spirit was created with the pep rally on Friday morning where the cheerleaders, band, majorettes, and flag team all performed. That evening the band began the halftime show by playing “Daybreak” as they came onto the field. The big moment finally came and Wendy Orvosh was announced queen. The band played “Ice Castles” as Mr. Marasti crowned her and many hugs and tears were exchanged. FENOGLIETTO-ADVISOR, BRIAN SHIRLEY - VICE PRESIDENT, MISSING FROM PHOTO; THOMAS OKOPAL - PRESIDENT. We entered the high school in 1977 with our knees shaking; looking up at the big seniors, and thinking that we would never be that old. Our 8th grade year brought along more involvement in school activities and a new principal, Mr. Marasti. Our freshman year was a year of firsts. We joined clubs, voted for officers, and held our first dance. Our choices for officers were Tom Okopal as president, Cathy Anderson as Vice-president, Cathy Shaulis as treasurer, and Shirl Travis as secretary. “Time Stands Still” was the theme of our sweaterhop, with “Still” by the Commodors as the song of the dance. We became sophomores and stepped up to senior high. Some of our classmates went to the new Vo-Tech School in Indiana to learn different skills. This was the year we sponsored the Christmas dance, “Mistletoe Magic.” We ordered our class rings and began to think that seniors were not that old. Eleventh grade was the year of the Trojans! Our football team, basketball team, and cheerleaders were champions; bringing additional pride to our school. Our prom theme was “Tonight Is Ours” and “Open Arms” by Journey was our song. Our Senior year was right around the corner. SENIORS at last! For the last time we participated in clubs and teams, went to dances, and elected officers. For our senior class officers, we chose Tom Okopal as president, Brian Shirley as vice-president, Jackie Soler as Treasurer, and Stephanie Zelich as Secretary. The time we looked forward to for so long came at last. GRADUATION!!! Although we were happy to move on, we knew we would never forget the “good-times” and the people of Saltsburg High School. 18 SENIORS CAROL ASHBAUGH 19 SENIORS ANTHONY BUTEKOFF TINA COLE 20 SENIORS 21 SENIORS SENIORS 23 SENIORS 24 SENIORS 25 SENIORS 26 SENIORS JODIE SHONDELMYER ROBIN SWARTZ 27 SENIORS 28 SENIOR CLASS CLASS SONG “Run For The Roses” By Dan Fogelberg CLASS MOTTO What Lies Behind Us And What Lies Before Us Are Tiny Matters Compared To What Lies Within Us. —Ralph Waldo Emerson CLASS FLOWER Red Rose CLASS COLOR Burgundy And Cream 29 SENIOR STARS MOST ARTISTIC MATT SPEEDY AND BECKY COULTER MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED PATRICK LEZARK AND CATHY ANDERSON BEST DRESSED DAW CINDRIC AND BUDDY OKOPAL MOST INDIVIDUALISTIC JOHN BUCCO AND DENISE KAITO 30 PRETTIEST SMILE JOI PISTININZI AND KRISSY RESNICK ■ r SENIOR STARS MOST VERSATILE CATHY SHAULIS, NOREEN BRADY, AND GLENN RICHARDS PRACTICAL JOKERS DANA ZELICH, CHRIS YEAGER, AND JULIE McCURDY MOST FLIRTATIOUS MARNIE BLANKENSHIP AND ANTHONY BUTEKOFF MUSICALLY INCLINED ROBIN WHITESEL AND DONALD HARKLEROAD BEST CONVERSATIONALISTS JILL TURK AND ED BROWN SENIOR STARS PRETTIEST EYES CAROL ASHBAUGH AND FELIX ROCCO MOST DEPENDABLE JACKIE SOLER AND BOB FRASSEN El PRETTIEST HAIR STEVE KOPCHICK AND DENISE RADOMSKI MOST ATHLETIC TERRI LYNCH AND BRIAN SHIRLEY SHYEST THERESA PAYNE AND JOE POMPOSINI SENIOR INDEX Cathy Lee Anderson: Cheerleading 1, Marching Band 2, Color Guard 3, 4, Concert Band I, 2, 3, 4, Band Secretary Treasurer 4, Student Council 1, 2. 3, 4, YEA I, 2, 3, 4, Girls Varsity S 4, Powdcrpuff 3, 4, Class Vice-President I, 2, Volleyball 1, 2, 3, 4, Sweater Hop escort 1, Yearbook Staff 2, 3, 4, Indiana Gazette School and Scribes, Who's Who in American High School Students 4. Both teams were ready and raring to play although the playing field was like a muddy swamp. After an introduction of the players by Mr. Gordish and a pep talk by the ■ coaches, the girls took their positions on the field. The first touchdown was made early in the game by a pass from Terri Lynch to Julie McCurdy. From there the seniors went on to make four more touchdowns - shutting the junior girls out with a score of 40-0. Congratulations seniors!! SENIOR POWDERPUFF Row . The Youth Education Association Club, under the direction of Mrs. Cindy Hannum, Mrs. Becky Stiffler, and Mr. Lewis Sadecky, is one of the largest clubs in our school. This year the members of the club had the opportunity to tutor at the elementary schools in the evenings. This provided a great first hand experience of what teaching is all about. Participating in teaching of supervisory activities enables students to perceive their future role in teaching and to test and reformulate their perceptions. Throughout the year, the members do various activities such as watch films, hold raffles, and give away various door prizes. It is designed to teach the members the ethics of outdoor sports and to encourage and promote better sportsmanship. The members find it a very interesting and worthwhile club! STUDENT SECRETARIES Under the direction of Miss Polochko, the student secretaries develop a better understanding of the role of a secretary with hands on experience with secretarial duties. The students learn to perform a variety of tasks. Some of these most common skills are handling communications, operating calculating machines, duplication of materials, and typing letters. The girls develop an awareness for appropriate appearance. They also learn to be effective co-workers. Secretaries must be made aware of the needs of others and be willing to provide information and assistance when needed. When the 1982 football season started the Trojans got off to a fresh start with a young team and a new head coach. Mr. Roily Young took command of the small but sturdy Trojan ship. The season opener found the Men of Troy shutting out Ferndale. This increased the Trojans winning streak to 13 games. A streak which came to a quick hault as they were defeated in two consecutive games against Laurel Valley and Flomer Center. Our guys bounced back with big wins against Conemaugh Valley and rival Blairsville. Against United the Trojans took a bad bounce but regained some confidence when they tied Penns Manor. A disappointing homecoming with Purchase Line led to a triumphant senior night against Marion Center to end the Trojans season 4-4-1. The Trojanettes got an early start in late July by attending camp at U.P.J. . There they learned new skills and sharpened the old ones finding plays to get that all important basket. With experienced seniors and a strong bench of juniors and sophomores they had the determination to be the best and were definite contenders in the I.C.L. . With a few difficulties the team managed a 7-5 regular season record. The last and probably the sweetest victory was against Marion Center. To excell on the mats, the guys have to combine strength and agility with perfect conditioning because the sport requires the use of almost every muscle in their body. Aside from being a physical enduring sport, wrestlers must have a combination of intelligence and cunning. A grappler which lacks in strength can defeat a “muscleman” by using the above mentioned qualities. Our matmen started getting into shape in late November by running, exercising and lifting. Mat work began in December with many hours being spent to learn the moves and polish their techniques. The key to the Saltsburg wrestler this year is dedication to the sport and team desire to excell, and aggressiveness to overcome the teams inexperience. 121 GRAPPLERS PIN TO WIN WRESTLERS COACHES-LOWMAN, TRUNZO, AND ??
