■JWJNf Junior Firemen Brad Trybus, Jr. Lieutenant, helping Chris Yeager tank up! Saltsburg used to be a typical sleepy, small Pennsylvania town. However, beginning in January things changed. The community nightmare began early New Year's morning, when someone set a fire in the 500 block of Salt Street. Ten fire companies battled the blaze, but the flames won! Four buildings housing a pinball and poolroom establishment, a hardware store, a dry cleaner, beer distributer, and apartments were leveled. One person was injured and 11 were left homeless. Damage was estimated at $1 million. In February, a building owned by the Saltsburg Free Library, used as a Haunted House, was destroyed and a blaze was set in a grocery store. In March, former police chief Charles Sharon found his Chevy Blazer ablaze. The vehicle was destroyed. The same night, a garage belonging to Saltsburg Mayor Charles Lauffer was set on fire. The Saltsburg police station was gutted in July and its records are destroyed. Damage was set at $4,000. In August, the Saltsburg police car was stolen from the front yard of former acting Police Chief, Terry Troup. Equipment in the car was stolen and its' charred remains found on an old free farm. The Saltsburg Junior Firemen have proved to be an invaluable asset to our community during such trying times. Our special thanks extend to all the dedicated members!!
