Staring straight ahead, pretending others aren't there. Wanting to reach out but not quite ready to dare. I’ve passed up many people who I see every day. Not giving them a second look, just staying far away. I've labeled many others as snobs and creeps and such. When I don't even talk to them or get to know them much. I'm afraid to make the first move, to smile or say Hello.” Afraid of getting a stare in return which will make my pride burn. I wish I didn't seem quite so cold on the outside. Peep in my soul. I want to reach out. I really do. Because I'd like to be friends with someone like you. I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself. but for what you are making of me. I love you because you have done more than any creed could have done to make me happy. You have done it without a touch, without a word, without a sign. You have done it by being yourself. Perhaps that is what being a friend means after all. 9or Zkosc Who Care About. •. Sally Anderson - Vice President, Patty McConnell Secretary, Tina Brunecke - Treasurer, Mr. Fenoglietto - Advisor. The class of 1980 is about to step into a world unknown to us. In the last six years we have become a unique class comprised of many different individuals. It was during our Freshman year that we began to build a reputation. During 1976-77 our officers were Dave Ciocca, Ken McDowell, Linda Urban, and Tami Roman. Our class presented the 1977 Sweater Hop. entitled Nights to Remember. As Sophomores, our class held the annual Christmas Dance, entitled Winter Wonderland, and of course this was the year we received our class rings. We were so proud that people began to hear that the class of 1980 did exist. The leaders of our sophomore year were Dave Ciocca, Cindy Shedlock, Norma Perkins and Tami Roman. Once Juniors, we began to think about the 1979 prom. First we elected officers to organize things. This year we chose Cindy Shedlock, Sally Anderson. Joyce Corbin, and Norma Perkins as officers. Today. Tomorrow, Forever was the theme for our prom. It was held at the Omni House, and no one will ever forget selling magazines and blowing up balloons for decorations. (Those that attended will always remember the hypnotist and the lady in red.) Now we are Seniors! It is hard to believe at times, but it is something our class truly earned. For this last year we voted Dave Ciocca. Sally Anderson, Patty McConnell and Tina Brunecke as our class officers. They will lead us to the end of our high school days and to a new beginning in life. 10 May each and every senior in the class of 1980 become one bright star in the world they are about to enter! But make allowance for their doubting too If you can wait and not be tired by waiting. Or. being lied about, don't deal in lies. Or. being hated, don’t give way to hating. And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream - and not make dreams your masters; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools. Or watch the things you gave your life to broken. And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it one one turn of pitch - and - toss. And lose, and start agains at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone. And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the will which says to them: Hold on”; If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue. Or walk with kings nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you. but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run -Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it. Marasti Principal 47 Mathematics The quality of Saltsburg’s math curriculum is based on two major goals, one for general students as well as one for those on the accelerated level. The goal to which the general math students strive is a total awareness of the consumer mathematics all around them. Instruction for these general math students deals with the application of mathematics in any situation occurring in everyday life along with any chosen career from labor to technology or administration. On the accelerated level. Saltsburg’s mathematics department try to instill in students, the beauty and simplicity of mathematics as well as the idea of how precise and abstract it can be. The instructor tries to make math meaningful for college - bound, non - math majors and yet challenging to those students who plan careers in the natural sciences. There are also two main goals of the business education teachers at Saltsburg High. The first objective of each instructor is to teach the students the necessary skills of business, thus enabling the students to obtain chosen careers in the business world. Secondly, the business instructor tries to provide all students with an awareness of the economic and social conditions of the country, so that the students can be alert consumers and good citizens. Special means of encouraging student interest at Saltsburg are movies, fieldtrips. and guest speakers from different secretarial schools. Theodore Gordish - Department Head Anna Marie Dechman John Hamp Judy Swasy Elaine Polochko Thomas Trunzo 48 English Carol Buterbaugh Lewis Fenoglietto - Department Head Kevin Judge John Shurina Spanish It is the supreme art of to awaken joy in creatj and knowledge. Albert tin ssion Z Gerald Gasperini The return of a full - term English course marks the change from specialized mini courses back to the more general basic skills. This change offers a chance for an honors English class, and for the first time. Saltsburg students have the opportunity for possible advanced placement in English at the college of their choice. For qualification, a special test is administered to interested students in May. Besides offering the possibility of advanced placement, full - term English classes provide opportunities for the instructor to expose more students to the many different study areas of English. Overall, this more traditional program is structured to allow instruction in literature, creative writing, and speaking skills. Learning Saltsburg High School s second language. Spanish, is a continuous building process. This program consists of three different levels, each level dealing with a different aspect of fluency. In Spanish I. the student learns the necessary, basic oral skills with instruction stressing the importance of correct enunciation and pronounciation. The student, in his second year, tries to improve his listening abilities and general understanding of the language. In Spanish III. emphasis is placed on reading and comprehension, although oral skills and audio abilities are still very important on this final level. Leonard Poliziani Science Robert Flack - Department Head Education is the instruction of the intellect in the laws of nature.” Thomas Henry Huxley The science program at Saltsburg High is structured to provide courses in physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science as well as general science for the younger students. In physics, the students learn how to apply math skills for problem solving in a practical situation. Besides learning the basic material that helps people in everyday living, chemistry students enjoy special experimentation. The objective of the biology I course is to instill in students the significance of all life forms irregardless of their places in the environment. Biology II students use this basic backround in their lab oriented course. In clothing, students learn about fabrics, colors, patterns, and sewing. In family living, they study relationships, responsibilities, and other things. Cooking classes prepare appetizers, main dishes, and desserts. At Saltsburg. industrial art students learn about the safe and correct use of tools, materials and processes. The industrial arts program is structured to provide practical experience in these areas. In agriculture, classes study many areas. Tree identification, planting and fertilizing techniques, landscaping, animal breeding habits, and masonry are a few of the topics to which the students are exposed. A special project for involvement is making the rafters for a house. James Gould House Home Barbara Allison Carol Weimer Edwin Hunter Practical Acts Norman Bortz Keith Veach - Agriculture Samuel Anderson Richard Lowman Heading Social Studies Louis Sadecky - Department Head I am noi a teacher: only a fellow • traveler of whom you have asked the way. I pointed ahead ahead of myself as well as of you.' Bernard Shaw The social studies curriculum at Saltsburg High School is divided into study areas concerning world cultures, world geography. American cultures. American government, and economics and sociology. In world cultures, students learn about European. African, and Chinese histories as well as their people. World geography is a continuation, but this course emphasizes the lands and peoples of today. In the same style. American cultures is an exclusive study of the American people and traditions. American government provides students with a clearer understanding of this great democratic system and its success. In economics and sociology, emphasis is placed on social behavior, and crime is studied extensively. The mam objective of this study is to help students become more alert people and better citizens. The reading program at Saltsburg High is based on three major goals. The first objective of the reading teacher is to help the student develop the basic skills and attitudes of a good reader. Secondly, instruction stresses the application of reading skills to all other learning classes. In the third place, the instructor tries to encourage an appreciation for reading that makes it a lasting part of the student's life style. Saltsburg’s librarian has some goals of her own for the year. First of all. she is trying to improve the book collection and expand the paperback book exchange. Secondly, she is encouraging more students to use the library for research. Lastly, she is trying to set up a brief refresher type of study center. jCibrarij Richard Shaffer Cynthia Zajec Janet Petrak Students at Saltsburg High can demonstrate their musical skills by performing in either the band or chorus. Instruction on music in general is given to seventh graders, and later, students may choose to continue studying either instrumental or vocal music. The real test of the student's musical talents lies in the competition in obtaining positions in county band and chorus. Later in the year, both vocal and instrumental students audition for districts” in their respective categories. At Christmas, the music students add a special touch to the festivity of the holiday season by performing jointly in an annual Christmas concert. The students also perform in an annual spring concert. The art students at Saltsburg have the opportunity to contribute to many positive, creative projects. After learning the basics during classroom instruction, students may demonstrate their talent by enhancing the school's decor. These spectacular displays can be seen throughout the school. The colorful optical illusion that decorates the ceiling drop on the main floor, between the office and room 35 is an interesting example. The illusion consists of three sets of blocks against a solid black background. As a person stands watching, the blocks appear to change positions. With this project, the students painted the blocks on paper in class. After painting the background on the ceiling drop black, they added the blocks. To do this, the students used a wall-papering technique such as the one used for making billboards. These optical blocks and other art projects help add a special quality to the character of Saltsburg High. Each specialties teacher at Saltsburg High School is concerned with helping students master the basic skills which are so necessary today. The teacher tries to help each student improve his reading and math skills, while also helping cope with the situations that occur in everyday life. One of the specialty projects students are involved in this year is putting together a model engine from a kit. The teacher must be able to conduct instruction in the classroom as well as on the gym floor. The classroom instruction is a health class required for sophomores. Here, the students learn the basic anatomy of the human body and how to help prevent infection and disease. Students also learn a little first-aid. On the gym floor, however, serious study is rejected and fun gains precedence. Students learn the basic rules for basketball, volleyball, and softball. They then apply their skills in highly competative, but goodnatured games. After playing hard in a few games, students are ready to return to the regular routine for the day. Saltsburg High School’s other staff members are also dedicated to the educational process. Bus drivers rise early and drive defensively to ensure student’s prompt and safe arrival at school. Cafeteria workers serve hot. nutritious lunches for both students and staff. Janitors. Saltsburg's handymen, keep the building clean and the machinery in working order. Students at Saltsburg High School appreciate these high-quality school members. CAFETERIA WORKERS: Left to Right. Gloria Urban. Esther Wright. Viola Bartolini. and lola Gasperini. They are dedicated instrumentalists. Each has their own personal choice of music, but they do their best while playing any form of music. One of our most devoted instrumentalists is Dave Ciocca. He is an outstanding trumpet player, who has actively participated in country district and honors band. The rewards from music are both self-rewarding and socially gratifying.
