5 SALTSBURG HIGH SCHOOL HOME OF THE TROJANS' I nt—II idfaf lii - nil - III LA SALTIANNA Volume 52 Saltsburg Junior-Senior High School Salisbury, Pennsylvania Dedication Reason and calm judgment, the qualities specially belonging to a leader.” Tacitus We. the Yearbook Staff of Saltsburg Junior-Senior High School, proudly dedicate the 1979 edition of the La Saltianna to our principal. Joseph A. Marasti. The qualities required of a principal are the same as those expected of great leaders: virtue, understanding, and fairness. Mr. Marasti’s character and ability prove that he possesses the spirit of leadership. Saltsburg Junior-Senior High School is honored to have such a man guide its students towards a future of happiness and fulfillment. 4 ««] ijOoosA w oo A 0«40 ,«0 0o y ■ ' Joseph A. Marasti, Principal Don’t Look Back Don't look back—a new day is breakin' It's been too long since I felt this way I don't mind where I get taken The road is callin'—today is the day I can see it took so long to realize I'm much too strong not to compromise Now I see what I am is holding me down I’ll turn it around I finally see the dawn arrivin' I see beyond the road I’m drivin' Far away and left behind It’s a new horizon and I’m awakin' now Oh I see myself in a brand new way The sun is shinin'—the clouds are breakin’ ’Cause I can’t lose now—there’s no game to play I can tell there’s no more time left to criticize I’ve seen what I could not recognize Everything in my life was leading me on But I can be strong The road is callin Now I see what I I can see it took so long to realize I’m much too strong not to compromise STREET CLOSED I finally see the dawn arrivin It’s a new horizon and I m awakin' now ■■UMB ACTIVITIES The Yearbook Staff . It waits for no one so we must seize our precious opportunities before they are gone forever. 114 Senior Class History The year was 1973. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the first day of school, we entered Saltsburg Junior-Senior High as seventh graders. We roamed the halls as the rookies of the school and received our share of being shoved around and picked on by the upperclassmen. In n attempt to become active in school life, several members of our class joined the Spanish Club, Junior High Concert Band, chorus, 7th grade basketball, and student council. We voted Judy Busi and Glenn Carr to represent our class as crownbearers for the Freshman Sweaterhop. Yes. our first year at Saltsburg was hectic, but loads of fun. Gaining status our second year at high school, we had members on the Junior High cheering squad, and on the football, basketball, and wrestling teams. This was the first year members of our class marched with the Senior High Band. We found ourselves going to more dances and activities and building memories that will last a lifetime. We elected class officers for the first time as Freshmen. We chose the following students to represent our class: President- Jeff Taylor, Vice President- Mike Ciocca, Secretary- Ramona Rudolph, and Treasurer- Chris Delfavero. According to tradition, the Freshman class has the honor of organizing the Sweater Hop. We proudly accepted our responsibility and chose the hit son, “Where Have They Gone” as our theme. The evening was a particularly special occasion for the members of our class who served as escorts for the seniors. They were Chris Delfavero. Mary Okopal. Ramona Rudolph, Lorraine Urban, Sue Waddle. Glenn Carr, Mike Ciocca. Bill Shirley. Jeff Taylor, and Barry Weimer. Ushers for the night were Chris Pride, Lisa Woodrow. Vernon Moran, and Jay Zuzek. Announcers were Diana Machak and Ken Fails. Our sponsor, Mr. Poliziani. made it possible for our first dance to be a success! We made it! As sophomores, we were now considered part of the Senior High. Class officer elections were held early in the year under the supervision of our sponsor, Mr. Gordish. Elected to office were President- Bill Shirley. Vice President-Mary Okopal. Secretary- Ramona Rudolph, and Treasurer- Diana Machak. For the first time, many of us were playing varsity sports and earning letters. Our main goal as sophomores, however, was to ring in the holiday season with style! We had the privilege of planning the annual Christmas dance. Combining the talents of the members of our class, we artistically “decked the walls” of the cafeteria. The occasion was a joyous success! When we entered our junior year, the only word on our mind was “Prom”. The first thing on our agenda was to elect class officers. We chose the following students to formulate our plans: President- Ed Feiling. Vice President- Bill Shirley, Secretary- Ramona Rudolph, and Treasurer- Sue Waddle. The only thing standing in our way now was money. To raise the funds we needed, we sold everything from tee-shirts and candles to spaghetti spoons and mugs. “Wonderful Tonight” was chosen as our song and theme. As if by magic, plus some very hard work, the ordinary stage was converted into a delightful scene. A beautiful trellis was enhanced with flowers and streamers and the entire set was bathed in moonlight. The grand march was conducted at a slightly different pace: the couples went “down” the steps instead of tripping “up” them as usual. From the school we traveled to the Holiday House in Monroeville where we were dined and entertained in style. A pantominist skillfully tickled our funnybones and sounds were provided by a group called “Steppin Out”. We then had a chance to show off all the new disco steps we learned, and before we knew it. it was time to return home. Thanks to our dedicated sponsor. Mr. Hunter, we have very special memories of our prom. Our senior year finally arrived. Saltsburg's new high school principal. Mr. Marasti. gave us the responsibility of setting good examples for the underclassmen, and we proudly accepted the honor. Our sponsor. Mr. Fenoglietto, conducted our last election of officers, which put the following into office: President- Ken Fails. Vice President- Bill Testa. Secretary-Ramona Rudolph, and Treasurer- Mary Kochanowski. Football and Girl's Basketball were hardly started when Homecoming arrived. Six girls were voted on the court instead of the usual five. They were: Chris DelFavero. Gretchen Kiser. Mary Okopal, Diana Machak, Ramona Rudolph and Sue Waddle. Their escorts for the night were Ken Fails. Jeff Taylor. John Liboski. Ed Feiling. Harold Duncan, and Rick Hall. At halftime. Ramona Rudolph was crowned 1979 homecoming queen by Mr. Marasti. With the close of football season, came the annual Powderpuff Game. A victory was scored by the class of second year by defeating the Juniors 30-0. Then came trophy time for the seniors. The girl’s basketball team won a 2nd place trophy for the county and had two representatives in the all-county team: Lisa Woodrow and Robin Seger. The cheerleaders brought home a 3rd place trophy for their accomplishment in a tri-county competition. To the seniors the annual Halloween dance represented one of the many “lasts” that they would be experiencing. All these thoughts will soon trickle through the sieve of time, and all that remains is memory — magnificent memory. 115 Senior Camera Hams Leader of the “BUCK” - The natural look.
