This year we feel that our clubs and organizations have made worth-while use of their scheduled meetings. The Red Cross presented the Willard Home with an evening full of fun and entertainment. The Tri-Hi-Y conducted a clothing drive to help the needy people of our surrounding community. The duties of the Library Club were increased quite a bit. The librarians were responsible for the interesting displays in the second-floor display case. The Girls Athletic Association sponsored many noontime activities, plus a dance for the benefit of the March of Dimes. A trip to Pittsburgh was sponsored by the Geography Club. However, it has not been just a difficult task, but it has been a task full of fun and cooperation. It has meant much to each member of the staff. We have had many important and decisive decisions to make, but due to the fine morale of the staff, we soon conquered each problem in an intelligent manner. We believe that without the patient guidance and advice received from Miss Kathleen Adornato this publication would never have been completed. Therefore, we, the 1956 LaSaltianna Staff, are proud to display our pictures on these pages for your recognition and enjoyment. We sincerely hope that you receive many hours of fun and relaxation from your yearbook. However, our main consideration was for your satisfaction; if this has been accomplished, then we definitely believe that our work has been successful. The last two issues of our paper were lithographed, which was a major accomplishment for our staff. Our sponsor. Miss Betty Lou Powers, experienced her first year as an advisor for the staff. Our Editor, Mary Lou Treece, worked hard to see that our paper contained the latest news. Ronald Beatty, Assistant Editor, wrote the editorials. He and Royal Palmer were News Editors. Our Feature Editor, Judy Hottel, wrote Morris. Her assistants, Martha Calhoun, Carol Reedy, and Fred Barkley, contributed many articles of interest. Judy Jordan was responsible for our artistic covers. John Johnson and John Bakes covered boys' sports; Mary Lou Peterson and Jean Negley covered girls' sports. Our Salesman, Paul Johnson, aided by the Salt Shaker representatives, took newspaper orders. Rita Pomposini mailed our exchange copies and wrote the gossip column. 'Peofete... student council . . . patrol The Student Council is the governing body of our school. Its purpose this year was to discuss student problems in and a-round the school. The officers this year were Robert Hund, president; Richard Clawson, vice-president; and Martha Dosch, secretary-treasurer. The Student Council organized a Student Court that was to be used to try student cases as they occurred during the year. The members of the Council directed the students and found numerous ways in which each student could participate in at least one school activity. Nick DeLuca, Robert Hund, and Richard Clawson attended a National Student Council Convention at Shaler Township High School. This year the Student Patrol was under the watchful guidance of Mr. John R. Coulson. The characteristics needed to be a student patrol boy are restrictive. Patrol boys must be able to control other students and must have the ability to cooperate with others. These boys were always available to aid anyone who needed help in crossing the streets. The patrol boys were usually seen on all street corners or at school crossings; they guarded our school against damage; and they made our school grounds a safer place to work and play. Mr. Coulson has completed a wonderful job of helping these boys become loyal supporters of our school. 45 ?4. t. sponsored noon-time activities First Row: Miss Turner, L. Mc-Divitt, R. Repine, D. These points went toward a pair of G. A. A. wings, a G. A. A. jacket, a G. A. A. pin, and a G. A. A. trophy. Our club consisted of girls who liked to play various games with the other girls in the organization. These girls cooperated by playing either basketball or volleyball when they were called upon to do so. They learned to be reliable, dependable, and loyal to their teams. The officers of the Thespian Club this year were Wade Cunkelman, president; Tom Flaminio, vice-president; Barbara Menser, treasurer; and Dorcas Shirley, secretary. The sponsor of the organization was Miss Margaret Jackson. The purpose of the Thespian Club was to give the students an opportunity to display their dramatic talents. The application of stage make-up was an item that was discussed thoroughly during the regular meetings of the club. The National Thespians is an organization that was made up of the students who had acquired the necessary number of points through the year. These points are obtained by participating in dramatic presentations. 47 future 'ytyameuuz erd... jills of all trades This year the Future Homemakers of America attempted to mold better and more intelligent young homemakers for Saltsburg. Many social activities were held in which every member had an opportunity to participate. The main event of the year was the installation of officers. Refreshments were served after the induction of the officers. Other events that were sponsored by the club were the Sadie Hawkin's Day Dance and the Spaghetti Supper. Two girls from the club were sent to a convention that was organized for Future Homemakers of America. Valuable information was obtained and conveyed to all the members of the organization. The Geography Club was organized for the purpose of providing an educational activity for the eighth grade students. The club was composed of three groups, each meeting once a week. When committees were formed during the year, a representative was chosen from each group. This year was the first time that Saltsburg had one of its Geographers elected as State President of the Junior Geographers of Pennsylvania. Marty Lin Gaulin will preside at the meetings of state committees throughout the coming year. The Geography Club had a picnic in June with the Greensburg School at Conemaugh Dam. Mr. Allen Cyphert was the patient sponsor of the organization. The main purpose of the club was to inform the students of the necessary safety precautions that should be taken when they came in contact with a rifle. Students were taught how to handle the rifles properly and how to aim correctly and thereby become better marksmen. Our club provided a place where information was given to aid young men to understand the everyday problems in life. Its purpose was to create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school and community high standards of Christian character. The emblem of the club is a red triangle with the letters Hi-Y inscribed on the top side with a white cross in the center. During the year we stressed the importance of clean speech, clean sportsmanship, clean scholarship and clean living. The Tri-Hi-Y Clubs chief interest was in its motto, to create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school and community high standards of Christian living. Any girl from grades nine to twelve was eligible to join Tri-Hi-Y regardless of race, color, or creed. This year, as in the past, the club was benevolent and thus brightened the lives of less fortunate persons. At Christmastime the girls went caroling to homes of the aged, presenting them with a cheery Christmas corsage. The first attempt to promote a Bundle Week drive proved to be a great success. The organization was composed of enthusiastic seventh graders and met three times a week. The club was very large and had to be divided into three sections. Each of the three sections had its own officers. Dues of fifty cents were paid yearly by each member. Since there was not a dark room at our school, the emphasis was aimed primarily toward science. In this club, Mr. Robert MacBlane, the instructor, tried to acquaint the students with a few of the fundamental principles of science. The club had various scientific experiments demonstrated to them, and they saw movies pertaining to science. The movies were about modern industry and pictured modern science at work. The Senior Science and Photography Club was made up of high school boys who were interested in science and in all phases of photography. One purpose of the club was to teach the boys how to operate a motion picture projector. The officers of our club were: Wade Cunkelman, president; Tom Flaminio, vice-president; and Russell Repine, secretary-treasurer. This year the Argus Company gave the club three complete camera outfits one 35 mm. C-3 and two Super 75 620 cameras, complete with flash attachments and carrying cases. These cameras have been used constantly during the school year. The club was unable tc develop or print the films that were taken because they did not have the proper facilities. However, they hope to have a dark room next year. The club saw many interesting films that dealt primarily with scientific principles. 55 Firs Row: Miss Carson, E. Ver-sino, K. Chrisman, P. Hall, L. Its main purpose was to take care of all the books in the library and the bulletin boards in the lower and upper halls. Every week pictures and poems were placed on these bulletin boards. This year the club had several students who took care of the library while Miss Mary Carson, the sponsor, was teaching music classes. Miss Carson planned several parties for the members of the club to brighten up the activities during the year. The student librarians, with the guidance of their sponsor, did a wonderful job of keeping the library in perfect order. The Junior Red Cross, under the direction of Mrs. Ruth George, did a splendid job of giving a helping hand whenever it was needed. Much time and thought were given to the Thanksgiving party for the children of the Willard Home in Indiana. Twenty dollars was sent to Indiana to help buy materials for gift chests which were sent overseas. The club also made ten portfolios containing stationery, envelopes, and ink blotters which were sent to the Veterans Hospital. Each month several members made arrangements to attend the County Council meetings which were held at the Red Cross Chapter House in Indiana. 56 Onya«U$4ti M4.... mixed chorus . . . future farmer The Mixed Chorus of Saltsburg Joint High School rehearsed in a section of the auditorium. The music awards, given by the Saltsburg Music Club, were presented to Dorcas Shirley and Mikell Noel. The Mixed Chorus, under the able direction of Miss Mary Carson, has just finished a very enjoyable and musical year. They usually picture a football player as an average, or below average, student whose grades are given to him. This year Saltsburg Joint High School proved to the public that it is possible for athletes to be excellent students. Two of the best players on the football team were named valedictorian and salutatorian of the 1956 Senior Class. Athletics contribute to one's personal character. Participation in sports teaches teamwork and cooperation, how to compete, and how to follow instructions. Participation in sports also makes it possible for students to be in the best physical condition and gives the young people a wise use for their leisure time. The most exciting game during the season was with Washington Township. Our team was losing by fourteen points and finished the game by winning with a margin of one point. The Bell-Avon game was also very important. Since our team won this game, they were awarded the Little Seven Conference Champion Trophy. The entire student body is very proud of the record that the team made this year. Excellent records can only be made through clean sports, ambitious players, and strenuous training. Seated: C. After a week of rigid practice, most of the boys had been chosen. Day after day these ten boys practiced until they knew every play perfectly. The five best players were picked to play on the first string and the the other five players were substitutes. The first five were: Robert Hund, Huey Whitesel, Robert Whitesel, Floyd Leonard, and Richard Clawson. The five substitutes were: Robert Walker, William Sorbin, Ronald Woodrow, Herman Flaminio, and Mike Brosko. When the time for the first game arrived, the team selected Robert Hund and Huey Whitesel as captains. Mr. Robert Flick was our coach and Don Cyphert, Robert Lincoln, and John Peterson were our managers. Our school was honored to have the highest scoring basketball player in Indiana County, Huey Whitesel, on our roster. This honor could not have been ours this season without the cooperation and school spirit displayed by all the players on the team. 65 @ KClt 0%enoe ... The Trojanettes had a very successful season this year which was opened by a demonstration game at Ormsby Recreation Center in Pittsburgh. After the demonstration game, we started our regular season with a full schedule. Our season ended with a 1 3-1 record. When our regular season ended, we entered the tournament at Pittsburgh sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation. After we had won two games in the tournament, we were beaten in the third game by Saint Benedict, making our final record 15-2. For the grand finale of the season we went once again to Pittsburgh and played an exhibition game for the Veterans Hospital; our opponents in this game were the Student Nurses of West Penn. tfaifo ... queens on the court FIRST ROW: Norma Swartz, Guard; Marcia Sloan, Forward; Jean Negley, Guard; Jean Heard, Forward Josephine Danilowicz, Forward. These five girls needed much practice and drill in order to become excellent cheerleaders. After about a week's work out, they finally were in condition to begin leading the school cheers. This year was the first time we had junior varsity cheerleaders. They certainly added a great deal of spirit to our games. To earn money to purchase uniforms, the cheerleaders held after-game dances for all the home football games and the Friday night basketball games. They also sold jackets and sweat shirts. Come rain or shine, you could always find these girls leading the student body in the school yells.
